Designing for cleanability: The effects of material, surface roughness, and the presence of blood test soil and bacteria on devices.

Cleaning reusable medical devices removes organic and inorganic soil, which allows for effective disinfection and sterilization. However, it is not always clear what variables to consider when validating cleaning. This study compared the ability of 3 different cleaning agents (ie, water, alcohol, and bleach) to remove bacteria (ie, vegetative and spores) and artificial blood test soil from 2 common device materials: polypropylene and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. There was a complex interaction between bacteria, soil, and surface roughness.

Suprapubic catheterization: challenges in changing catheters.

Suprapubic catheterization of the bladder is used as a short- or long-term alternative to urethral catheterization. As with any indwelling urinary catheter, correct insertion, care and removal are vitally important to minimize problems. A particular problem that affects suprapubic catheters is 'cuffing', which on its own or combined with encrustation can potentially cause a great deal of difficulty on removal or discomfort for the patient. This article discusses the causes of cuffing, and suggests using catheters with integral balloons to reduce the incidence of the problem.

GSM cell phones can interfere with ionizing radiation dose monitoring equipment.

Cell phone use is growing worldwide. These phones transmit to adjacent base stations using radiofrequency signals in the microwave range (approximately 900-approximately 1800 MHz). Portable electronic dose monitoring equipment is used in hospitals and other institutions to monitor and control levels of exposure to ionizing radiation, and to reassure staff. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of mobile phones on a sample of dose monitoring devices. Two mobile phones (Siemens C25 and Motorola CD930) were used in the study. Field strengths were measured to be in the range 0 V

Blood splash injury: an underestimated risk in endourology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mucocutaneous and transconjunctival exposure are important portals for the transmission of blood-borne infections to surgeons and health-care workers. Despite this knowledge, few surgeons or their assistants wear protective equipment for procedures perceived to be affiliated with less risk. This study investigates the potential risk of mucocutaneous and transconjunctival blood splash injury during common laparoscopic and endourologic procedures undertaken using standard video endoscopy equipment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Masks combined with eye shields were consecutively

Self-contamination risk and failure modes during high-level PPE doffing: A pilot comparison of 2 powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) hoods.

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment doffing protocols can reduce risks of pathogen self-contamination. Powered air-purifying respirators may increase these risks. This study compares viral contamination and errors during simulated doffing of single-layer versus double-layer hood powered air-purifying respirators. METHODS: Eight participants performed 2 simulations (video recorded for failure modes [FMs] and effects analysis): 1 single-layer hood (laid over Tyvek suit) and 1 double-layer hood (top laid over and bottom tucked into suit). Hoods were contaminated with viruses. After doffing

Microbiological surveillance after automated reprocessing of gastrointestinal endoscopes in routine clinical practice: A prospective randomized microbiological surveillance study.

Microbiological surveillance is used to monitor the quality of gastrointestinal endoscope reprocessing, but prospective data comparing automated endoscope reprocessor systems under routine workflow conditions remain limited. We conducted an exploratory, single-center, prospective randomized surveillance study of 222 endoscope-use episodes involving patient-used forward-viewing upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopes. Endoscope-use episodes were allocated 1:1:1 to strongly acidic electrolyzed water, ozonated water, or peracetic acid using an Excel-generated random-number procedure (n = 74 e

Doffing procedures of personal protective equipment evaluated with lipid nanoparticles as viral surrogates: uncovering potential blind spots.

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment (PPE) should effectively protect health care workers (HCWs) when treating infectious patients. However, during doffing contamination from outside of the PPE could be transferred and might cause serious infection. Therefore, complex doffing procedures have been developed, which include disinfection steps and would thereby protect the HCWs even if a contamination event occurred during doffing. However, assessing these complex multi-step procedures regarding risk of contamination and infection is challenging. The use of harmless surrogates with pathogen m

High-level disinfection of re-usable neonatal resuscitation equipment through boiling and steaming.

Infection and asphyxia are two major causes of neonatal death globally. Where single-use resuscitation devices or sterilization of re-usable devices are unavailable, there is a need for effective, low-cost methods of high-level disinfection. Laboratory validation examined the efficacy of boiling and enclosed steaming (without pressure) as methods for attaining high-level disinfection of re-usable neonatal resuscitation equipment. The microbial load extracted and measured for each test article met internationally accepted standards for high-level disinfection. Boiling and steaming are low-cost,

Code Grey: Stained Surgical Instruments and Their Impact on One Canadian Health Authority.

In 2016, NL's largest RHA was faced with serious challenges stemming from the discovery of stained surgical instruments at its two largest hospitals. This discovery prompted a series of postponed surgeries, an extensive internal mobilization of labour and the purchase of millions of dollars of new equipment. In tackling these challenges, the organization not only acquired a better understanding of its surgical tools, but it also gained renewed appreciation for the resilience of its human resources. By describing this incident and the lessons learned, we hope to offer insight to providers in si

Surface microbiological surveillance in a crowded emergency department: interplay of environmental pressure, construction, and disinfection efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surface contamination in emergency departments (EDs) is a recognized contributor to pathogen transmission. However, its relationship with organizational and environmental stressors remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: Between January and November 2025, monthly microbiological surface surveillance was conducted in a tertiary ED with approximately 70,000 annual visits. Standardized sampling using contact plates (25 cm2) targeted predefined sites, including high-touch surfaces, equipment, and walls. Indicator organisms included Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus

Is Your Surgical Helmet System Compromising the Sterile Field? A Systematic Review of Contamination Risks and Preventive Measures in Total Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Surgical helmet systems remain widely used in total joint arthroplasty (TJA) despite evidence to suggest that they may increase infection risk via contamination of sterile equipment and operating room air. However, the challenging nature of conducting high-quality clinical trials to study outcomes with low incidence, such as prosthetic joint infection (PJI), has made drawing definitive conclusions from the available experimental studies difficult. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the best available evidence is needed to clarify the association between surgical helmet system u

Neonatal cross-infection with Listeria monocytogenes.

Transmission of Listeria monocytogenes by food continues to cause concern. Even so, this is not the only means of transmission and neonatal hospital-acquired infection has been well recorded. We report here two cases of perinatal listeriosis one of which was likely to have been due to cross-contamination in a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) with equipment acting as the vehicle.

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for the rapid and quantitative tracking of fecal contamination sources in water.

Fecal contamination in water poses a serious threat to public health and the ecological environment. Numerous qPCR-based methods have been used to identify the source of fecal contamination, but this method relies on expensive equipment, well-established laboratory conditions, and experienced personnel, significantly reducing the timeliness of identifying contamination sources. Here, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for tracking the sources of fecal contamination to rapid identifying and quantifying humans, ruminants, pigs, and poultry fecal contamination.
