Correlating estrogen replacement therapy and temporomandibular disorders: a comprehensive review following PRISMA principles and cochrane handbook for systematic reviews of interventions.

BACKGROUND: Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is a common hormonal treatment for postmenopausal women, aimed at alleviating menopausal symptoms and reducing the health risks associated with estrogen deficiency. However, the impact of ERT on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) remains unclear. This systematic review aims to evaluate the relationship between ERT and TMDs, including TMD occurence, pain, and associated symptoms. METHODS: A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases was conducted using predefined search terms and Boolean operators. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies ex

Timing Matters: Effects of Early and Late Estrogen Replacement Therapy on Glucose Metabolism and Vascular Reactivity in Ovariectomized Aged Wistar Rats.

Cardiovascular disease incidence increases after menopause due to the loss of estrogen cardioprotective effects. However, there are conflicting data regarding the timing of estrogen therapy (ERT) and its effect on vascular dysfunction associated with impaired glucose metabolism. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of early and late ERT on blood glucose/insulin balance and vascular reactivity in aged ovariectomized Wistar rats. Eighteen-month-old female Wistar rats were randomized as follows: (1) sham, (2) 10-week postovariectomy (10 w), (3) 10 w postovariectomy+early estradiol ther

Estrogen Replacement Therapy in Ovariectomized Nonpregnant Ewes Stimulates Uterine Artery Hydrogen Sulfide Biosynthesis by Selectively Up-Regulating Cystathionine β-Synthase Expression.

Estrogens dramatically dilate numerous vascular beds with the greatest response in the uterus. Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a potent vasodilator and proangiogenic second messenger, which is synthesized from L-cysteine by cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE). We hypothesized that estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) selectively stimulates H2S biosynthesis in uterine artery (UA) and other systemic arteries. Intact and endothelium-denuded UA, mesenteric artery (MA), and carotid artery (CA) were obtained from ovariectomized nonpregnant ewes (n = 5/group) receiving v

Relation of estrogen receptor-alpha gene polymorphism and hormone replacement therapy to fall risk and muscle strength in early postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Several factors may increase fracture risk, among them reduced bone mineral density (BMD), increased bone resorption, microarchitectural deterioration of bone, increased fall risk, and decreased muscle strength. We have previously reported that PvuII polymorphism of the estrogen receptor-alpha (ER alpha) gene is associated with bone loss rate, fracture risk, and response to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in early postmenopausal Finnish women. METHOD: We studied the influence of the ER alpha genotype on fall risk and muscle strength in a 5-year randomized HRT trial of 331 early

Associations of periodontal disease with femoral bone mineral density and estrogen replacement therapy: cross-sectional evaluation of US adults from NHANES III.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the possible association of periodontal disease with (1) femoral bone mineral density (BMD), and (2) estrogen replacement therapy in a large sample of US adults (N= 11,655). The mean clinical attachment loss (CAL) per person was the main outcome variable. Based on the total BMD of the proximal femur and using the WHO diagnostic criteria, subjects were classified as having osteoporosis, osteopenia, or normal BMD. After adjusting for confounders, females with high calculus scores and low BMD had significantly more CAL than females with normal BMD and

Equilin, a principal component of the estrogen replacement therapy premarin, increases the growth of cortical neurons via an NMDA receptor-dependent mechanism.

Regulation of both the outgrowth and the survival of neurons involved in cognitive function can have a significant impact on the function of neural networks involved in memory and other cognitive processes. Results of this investigation demonstrated that 17beta-estradiol and the estrogenic steroids estrone, estriol, mestranol, and equilin induced significant increases in cortical nerve cell growth. Of the neurotrophic estrogenic steroids, equilin was most efficacious. We therefore conducted an extensive analysis of equilin-induced neurotrophism. Equilin induced highly significant increases in

[Attitudes toward estrogen replacement therapy. Study conducted on a sample population of women attending an ambulatory care center for the treatment of menopause].

Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment of menopausal disturbances and has an established role in reducing the cardiovascular risk and in preventing the postmenopausal osteoporosis. Nevertheless several reports have evidenced that compliance with hormonal replacement therapy was not as good as expected, and that physician's and women's opinions can strongly influence the HRT choice, and the continuation of HRT use. The aim of this study was to assess the opinions and the expectations of menopausal women toward HRT. PATIENT AND METHODS. We utilized a questionnaire exp

Preparation of pumpkin oil-based nanoemulsion as a potential estrogen replacement therapy to alleviate neural-immune interactions in an experimental postmenopausal model.

As estrogen production decreases during menopause; the brain's metabolism tends to stall and become less effective. Estrogen most likely protects against neurodegeneration. Consequently, a comprehensive study of the benefits of hormone replacement therapy as a neuroprotective effect is urgently required. This study was designed to fabricate pumpkin seed oil nanoparticles (PSO) in nanoemulsion form (PSO-NE) and investigate their potential role in attenuating the neural-immune interactions in an experimental postmenopausal model.Sixty female white albino rats were divided into six groups: contro

Identification of a novel estrogen-regulated gene, EIG121, induced by hormone replacement therapy and differentially expressed in type I and type II endometrial cancer.

PURPOSE: The identification of genes and pathways that are affected by estrogenization may shed light on the mechanisms of estrogen action. Here, we describe the expression pattern of a novel estrogen-induced gene, EIG121, in distinct types of endometrial cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: EIG121 was identified by cDNA microarray analysis of endometrial RNA from women receiving either placebo or estrogen replacement therapy. The expression level of EIG121 was then measured by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR in benign, hyperplastic, and malignant endometrial samples. A polyclonal an

[The influence of hormonal replacement therapy on bone density in postmenopausal women depending on polymorphism of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and estrogen receptor (ER) genes].

Osteoporosis is still an important health problem in modern societies. The densitometric criterion for the diagnosis of this condition established by WHO in 1994 is bone mass density (BMD) lower than 2.5 standard deviation (SD) from the mean value for young healthy individuals of the same sex. Between 60 and 90% of bone density (quantity of bone tissue in the human skeleton) at the time when growth is terminated is genetically determined. For this reason, genes predisposing to osteoporosis and mechanisms of their activity remain the object of investigations. Among them are genes coding for vit

Estrogen replacement therapy in combination with continuous intrauterine progestin administration reduces the amount of circulating oxidized LDL in postmenopausal women: dependence on the dose of progestin.

BACKGROUND: Oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a key role in processes leading to atherosclerosis. Recent studies show that LDL oxidation in vitro is effectively prevented by estrogen. Yet, the effect of hormonal therapy (HT) on in vivo LDL oxidation has remained open. AIM: We used a novel methodology for the measurement of oxidized LDL in vivo in order to investigate the effects of HT. METHODS: The subjects were derived from two separate trials. In trial 1 (24 months) women (n = 32) used intra-uterine system releasing 10 micrograms/day levonorgestrel, and 2 mg oral estradiol. Tria
