Comparative Analysis of Large Language Models in Interpreting Publication Research Ethics: Insights from COPE Forum Case Studies.

BackgroundCommittee on Publication Ethics (COPE) serves as one of the key resources for journal editors navigating ethical challenges. This study evaluated two large language models (LLMs) in interpreting real-world publication ethics cases compared to COPE member responses.MethodsEleven anonymized COPE cases were selected. Gemini 2.5 Flash and DeepSeek-V3.2 provided editorial advice for each case. Responses were scored using a structured rubric supplemented by descriptive case-wise comparisons relative to COPE responses.ResultsBoth LLMs generated detailed responses for all cases, with similar

Preventing burnout from moral distress among prehospital emergency personnel through action research and targeted clinical ethics support.

Ethical challenges are integral to health care and are associated with moral distress among health professionals. Moral distress can turn into burnout with a range of negative effects for professionals, patients, relatives, collaborators, and the organisation. Based on action research a focus group study was conducted inclucing prehospital personnel from the emergency services in the Region of Southern Denmark. Results showed that ethical challenges arise in contexts of (1) caring for patients, (2) managing organisational demands, (3) collaborating. Ethical challenges are addressed informally

Pro-Con Perspectives on Ethics in Surgical Research: Update from the 39th Annual Surgical Infection Society Meeting.

Background: Surgical research is potentially invasive, high-risk, and costly. Research that advances medical dogma must justify both its ends and its means. Although ethical questions do not always have simple answers, it is critically important for the clinician, researcher, and patient to approach these dilemmas and surgical research in a thoughtful, conscientious manner. Methods: We present four ethical issues in surgical research and discuss the opposing viewpoints. These topics were presented and discussed at the 39th Annual Meeting of the Surgical Infection Society as pro-con debates. Th

Impact of in-patient research participation on subsequent heroin use patterns: implications for ethics and public health.

AIMS: Research on drug dependence often involves the administration of drugs of abuse to experienced drug users under controlled laboratory conditions. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether participation in such research alters the frequency of heroin use by non-treatment-seeking opioid-dependent volunteers after study completion. DESIGN: Data were examined from four in-patient studies involving controlled opioid administration. SETTING: Substance Use Research Center at Columbia University, New York State Psychiatric Institute. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-nine heroin-dependent v

When ethics constrains clinical research: trial design of control arms in "greater than minimal risk" pediatric trials.

For more than three decades clinical research in the United States has been explicitly guided by the idea that ethical considerations must be central to research design and practice. In spite of the centrality of this idea, attempting to balance the sometimes conflicting values of advancing scientific knowledge and protecting human subjects continues to pose challenges. Possible conflicts between the standards of scientific research and those of ethics are particularly salient in relation to trial design. Specifically, the choice of a control arm is an aspect of trial design in which ethical a

Ethical Challenges of Obtaining Informed Consent: Qualitative Research on the Perspectives of Tuberculosis Patients Participating in Human Genomic Research in Ethiopia.

The use of human genetic variation to comprehend complex diseases has also introduced several ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI). Despite the important contribution of Human Genome Research (HGR), full comprehension of these issues by all its stakeholders remains challenging. This research focused on exploring the understanding of research participants on the informed consent process of HGR. Nineteen Ethiopian TB patients, who participated in genomics research, were purposely selected for in-depth interviews. Their recorded responses were transcribed into text-based versions and analyz

Ethical issues in conducting health research with people in prison: Results of a deliberative research project conducted with people in Australian prisons.

Planning research involving people in prison raises concerns based on past abuses of incarcerated people amongst other factors. Despite the development of guidelines for the ethical conduct of research in prisons, researchers and advocates have questioned whether current approaches aimed at protecting incarcerated persons from unethical research unfairly exclude this group from participating in and benefitting from research. Discussion of these issues comes mostly from expert opinion. An absent voice is that of people in prison. This study identifies the key ethical issues according to people

"Is There Anything Else You Would Like to Add?": The Ethics of (Not) Addressing Research Participants' Top Concerns in Public Health Emergency Health Research.

When conducting interviews or focus groups, researchers often end with a simple question; "Is there anything else you would like to add?" This article takes responses to this question provided by participants in a study of "West Africans' Perceptions of Ebola research" as its point of departure. A number of participants in that study accepted the invitation to add on to their interview at its end with details of suffering from the sequelae of Ebola in their communities, and criticisms of state social abandonment. Some explicitly asked the researcher to ensure the suffering of Ebola survivors w

From presence to participation: Ethical engagement in community advisory boards for drug use research.

Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are frequently recommended for community-engaged research. They are intended to incorporate the experiential knowledge of people most affected by research. However, CABs often fail to achieve these participatory ideals. Increasingly, people with lived or living experience of stigmatized health-related issues serve on CABs as study population representatives. Yet their perspectives on ethical engagement remain underexamined. We define ethical engagement as the epistemic, relational, and structural conditions under which members perceive their experiential knowle

Ethical guidance for health research in prisons in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the extent, range and nature of the published literature, prison policies and technical guidance relating to the ethical conduct of health research in prisons in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). STUDY DESIGN: Scoping Review. METHODS: We adhered to the five stages of the scoping review iterative process: identifying the research question, identifying relevant studies, study selection, charting the data, and collating, summarizing and content analysis of polices. Disagreements around allocation of content were resolved through team discussion. We also a

Ethical aspects of sudden cardiac arrest research using observational data: a narrative review.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) accounts for half of all cardiac deaths in Europe. In recent years, large-scale SCA registries have been set up to enable observational studies into risk factors and the effect of treatment approaches. The increasing scale and variety of data sources, coupled with the implementation of a new European data protection legal framework, causes researchers to struggle with how to handle these 'big data'. Data protection in the SCA setting is especially complex since patients become at least temporarily incapacitated, and are thus unable to provide prospective informed co

The use of human tissue in epidemiological research; ethical and legal considerations in two biobanks in Belgium.

This paper discusses the legal implications of setting up two new biobanks in Belgium. The first is hospital-based and will archive tissue from patients with haematologic cancer, whereas the second is linked to a general practice based morbidity registry and will involve storage of blood samples. To date, Belgium has no specific legislation that regulates storage of human tissue and related databases. Several issues concerning the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal medical data are discussed from the existing privacy legislation. We will address the principle o

The Kalgoorlie Otitis Media Research Project: rationale, methods, population characteristics and ethical considerations.

Otitis media (OM) is one of the most common paediatric illnesses for which medical advice is sought in developed countries. Australian Aboriginal children suffer high rates of OM from early infancy. The resultant hearing loss can affect education and quality of life. As numerous factors contribute to the burden of OM, interventions aimed at reducing the impact of single risk factors are likely to fail. To identify key risk factors and understand how they interact in complex causal pathways, we followed 100 Aboriginal and 180 non-Aboriginal children from birth to age 2 years in a semi-arid zone

"Stuck in the middle with you": the ethics and process of qualitative research with two people in an intimate relationship.

In this article, the authors discuss their experiences of two separate research projects involving interviews with both partners in care relationships that pushed the ethics of research methods along unfamiliar routes. The desire to understand the relationship from both sides was seen to outweigh the perils of accessing both stories but only when the ethical and procedural elements had been sufficiently worked through. It is those ethical and procedural elements that they share in this article, which is offered as a provocative nudge toward a continued critical appraisal of ethical standards w

Effects of researcher follow-up of distressed subjects: tradeoff between validity and ethical responsibility.

Researchers studying depression often encounter research participants in serious preexisting distress. Examining investigators' ethical responsibilities to these subjects, Stanton and New (1988) found that depression researchers reported actions that ranged from doing nothing to contacting both the distressed subject and a significant other. By experimentally manipulating consent form information regarding potential treatment referral, we examined whether subjects (n=357) adjusted their responses on depression measures as a function of the level of follow-up they expected to receive. Results r

Distinct challenges faced by surgeons in conducting and publishing surgical research: implications for training, ethics, and academic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgical research is beset by a distinct set of challenges that differ meaningfully from those encountered in other medical disciplines. Despite surgeons' historic contributions to medical advancement, the proportion of surgeon-authored publications has declined relative to total medical literature output over the latter half of the twentieth century. This narrative review aims to comprehensively identify, categorise, and discuss the specific barriers surgeons face in conducting and publishing surgical research, with implications for surgical training, research ethics, and academic

Stigma, surveillance, and wounded healing: Promoting a critical ethics of care in research with formerly incarcerated Black women.

Black women experience myriad challenges post incarceration, from managing stigma within social relationships to navigating surveillance when interfacing with service systems. It is these challenges that also make them vulnerable participants in community-based research. With many of potential research harms not falling under the guidance of Institutional Review Boards, it is critical to explore how communities experiencing stigma and surveillance perceive their engagement in research. As such, this study explores how 28 justice-involved Black women experience the research process. Findings re
