The identification, priorization and anticipation of the ethics conflicts, allow the Healthcare Ethics Committees (HEC) a better approach to them, as well as the adoption of measures to prevent its appearance and/or its mitigation. For this purpose, we set ourselves the objective of knowing what they are in the present, how important they are, and what would be the future scenario to face. An qualitative structure research was made whit two focal groups whit the participation of nurses, nurse auxiliary and doctors from the hospitalization area, they also answer a future ethics conflicts Decalo

This article has been retracted by agreement between the authors, Editors and Publisher. The author responsible for managing the ethics committee's approval (B.R.) acknowledges full responsibility for the absence of the requested contact information for the local ethics committee, which was also not included in the official approval documentation. The other authors were not involved in this aspect and bear no responsibility for this omission.

A child in a vegetative state may present difficult decisions for physicians and families regarding the course of treatment. We report a case of a child who entered a prolonged vegetative state following status epilepticus. The child's parents requested termination of artificial means of nutrition and hydration. That request culminated in a complex legal intervention by multiple state agencies and attracted local media attention. This article presents the details of the case and discusses the medical and legal complexities encountered. The diagnosis and prognosis of the persistent vegetative s

Ethical human subjects research must have an acceptable risk-benefit ratio, which requires that the net risks participants face be proportionate to the research's social value. Yet existing scholarship does not explain what makes risks proportionate to social value. Here, I distinguish internal and external senses of proportionality and argue that it is internal proportionality that is the proper object of IRB/REC review. I propose understanding internal proportionality in terms of a literal ratio of expected health effects; I also argue against the alternative of attempting to assess proporti

Clinical gene transfer research has involved adult and child subjects, and it is expected that gene transfer in fetal subjects will occur in the future. Some genetic diseases have serious adverse effects on the fetus before birth, and there is hope that prenatal gene therapy could prevent such disease progression. Research in animal models of prenatal gene transfer is actively being pursued. The prospect of human phase I in utero gene transfer studies raises important regulatory and ethical issues. One issue not previously addressed arises in applying U.S. research regulations to such studies.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with squamous lung cancer representing a significant subtype. Despite advancements in chemotherapy and immunotherapy, outcomes for patients with advanced squamous lung cancer remain suboptimal. Recent studies have shown that immunotherapy, particularly with programmed death receptor 1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors, can improve survival rates, but challenges persist in achieving durable responses. Combining immunotherapy with radiotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy. Stereotactic

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify and characterize barriers faced by researchers studying abortion in academic medical centers in the United States. We specifically focused on regulatory restrictions on abortion research related to institutional review board (IRB) or research ethics committee interpretations of Subpart B of the 2001 Code of Federal Regulations, which states that researchers cannot take part in decisions involving the timing, method, or procedures used to terminate a pregnancy. We aimed to document investigators' experiences obtaining approval from their IRBs and to identify obs

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is used to biopsy and analyse embryos created through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to avoid implanting an embryo affected by a mutation or chromosomal abnormality associated with serious illness. It reduces the chance that the parents will be faced with a difficult decision of whether to terminate the pregnancy, if the disorder is detected during the course of gestation. PGD is widely accepted for this purpose although there have been suggestions that such procedures have the effect of de-valuing persons in the community with disabilities. PGD potential

INTRODUCTION: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are the future custodians of country, culture and community for the world's oldest living cultures. However, they continue to experience significant disadvantage as a legacy of British colonisation. Failure to address the systemic inequities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children infringes on their rights to health, education, safety and cultural identity. Despite this, there has been limited focus on recognising and measuring the cultural and personal strengths that support their well-being. This study aims to

Patient autonomy has long been considered a foundational principle in biomedical ethics and has been defined, in its most basic form, as a right to self-governance or self-determination. The emphasis that is placed on patient autonomy results in a necessary attention to a patient's values, expressed wishes, and decision making in a medical context. However, in an era of healthcare consumerism, where healthcare may be treated like any other good, the line between patient-centered care and patient-directed care becomes blurred, potentially resulting in a mindset that the patient (as a consumer)

Global fatalities related to COVID-19 are expected to be high in 2020-2021. Developing and delivering a vaccine may be the most likely way to end the pandemic. If it were possible to shorten this development time by weeks or months, this may have a significant effect on reducing deaths. Phase II and phase III trials could take less long to conduct if they used human challenge methods-that is, deliberately infecting participants with COVID-19 following inoculation. This article analyses arguments for and against such methods and provides suggested broad guidelines for regulators, researchers an

: Numerous medical schools currently offer a master of arts (MA) in bioethics dual degree for physicians. A degree in bioethics enhances the care physicians provide to patients and prepares physicians to serve on ethics committees and consult services. Additionally, they may work on institutional and public policy issues related to ethics. Several physician assistant (PA) programs currently offer a master of public health (MPH) dual degree for PAs. A degree in public health prepares PAs for leadership roles in meeting community health needs. With the success of PA/MPH dual degree programs, we

The policies and practices for obtaining informed consent from research subjects in clinical research play a vital role in determining a nation's success as a center for clinical research. The difficulty lies in the fact that while on the one hand, informed consent is a necessary pre-condition for ethical clinical research, a scrupulous observance of the guidelines for informed consent could, on the other hand, cripple medical research. Crippling of ethical medical research can be adverse to public interest, and consequently, unethical. Hence, a fine balance must be struck in the application o

BACKGROUND: Although multiple studies have offered self-collection for human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical screening in community settings, there are no randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that have compared implementation outcomes of programme approaches for self-collection. This trial will compare two such approaches in low-resource settings in the states of Tamil Nadu and Mizoram, India.
METHODS: A cluster RCT will be conducted over a year, offering self-collection to 3000 women aged 30-49 from 28 clusters (average size 101) in selected districts. Clusters in tribal, rural and urban

INTRODUCTION: Malaria infection during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality and should be prevented and treated. Artemisinin-based combination treatments are generally well tolerated, safe and effective; the most used being artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP). Pyronaridine-artesunate (PA) is a new artemisinin-based combination. The main objective of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of PA versus AL or DP when administered to pregnant women with confirmed Plasmodium falciparum infection in the second or third tri

Does the public hospital have the capability of harbouring this research? In any case, it is an important mission entrusted to it by the Huriet law. But even before the law has come into effect (the date of applicability was initially set for January 1st 1990, postponed until June 1st 1990, and then further pushed back to December 31st 1990 due to the lack of publication of corresponding application decrees), its text has prompted many questions and much debate among numerous health sectors. We are limited in the extent to which we may estimate, within the context of the public hospital, the s
