Epidemiological Trends of Human Monkeypox Cases in Northern, Southern, Western, and Eastern Regions in Europe: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The growing amount of monkeypox cases in non-endemic regions raises concerns in societies as a potential pandemic. This study highlights the prevalence and epidemiological trends of a human monkeypox outbreak in various regions in Europe. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The data about the monkeypox outbreak in European countries were recorded by the World Health Organization (WHO), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. The period prevalence-ba

HIV, Drug Injection, and Harm Reduction Trends in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Implications for International and Domestic Policy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Scaling up evidence-based HIV prevention strategies like opioid agonist therapies (OAT), syringe services programs (SSPs), and antiretroviral therapy (ART) to mitigate the harms of drug injection is crucial within Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA), the only region globally where HIV incidence and mortality are increasing. RECENT FINDINGS: Though the proportion of new HIV cases directly attributable to drug injection has recently declined, it remains a critical driver of HIV, especially to sexual partners. Concurrently, scale-up of OAT, SSPs, and ART has remained low, c

Network Research Experiences in New York and Eastern Europe: Lessons for the Southern US in Understanding HIV Transmission Dynamics.

PURPOSE: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of risk and social network methods and the kinds of research questions each can address. RECENT FINDINGS: It also reviews what network research has discovered about how network characteristics are associated with HIV and other infections, risk behaviors, preventive behaviors, and care, and discusses some ways in which network-based public health interventions have been conducted. Based on this, risk and social network research and interventions seem both feasible and valuable for addressing the many public health and social problems

Bartonella DNA in heart tissues of bats in central and eastern Europe and a review of phylogenetic relations of bat-associated bartonellae.

BACKGROUND: Bats are among the most widely distributed mammals worldwide and can represent hosts or reservoirs for a number of different pathogens. Bartonella spp. are opportunistic bacterial pathogens, which are transmitted by a large variety of arthropods. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and host-associations of these Gram-negative bacteria in heart tissues of bats collected in four different countries from eastern and central Europe and to analyze their phylogenetic relationship with other bat-associated bartonellae. RESULTS: The results of this study show for the fir

A step forward in the understanding of the presence and expansion of Echinococcus multilocularis in Eastern Europe using microsatellite EmsB genotyping in Poland.

Alveolar echinococcosis is a severe zoonotic disease caused by the parasite Echinococcus multilocularis. In Europe, the lifecycle of this cestode is mainly sylvatic based on a prey-predator interaction between the red fox and small rodents as definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively. National surveillance of E. multilocularis in red foxes in Poland has reported a clear distinction between low endemic areas (from 2 to 5.7%) in the western half and high endemic areas (11.8 to 50.0%) in the eastern half of the country. A drastic increase of prevalence has been observed in the eastern half

Fighting rabies in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia--experts call for a regional initiative for rabies elimination.

MEEREB is an informal network of rabies experts from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, seeking to eliminate rabies from the region. They met for the second time to review the current rabies situation, both globally and in their respective countries, highlighting current rabies control problems and potential solutions. Success stories in Latin America, in Western Europe, in some Asian countries, as well as in Croatia and Serbia prove that elimination of human rabies is achievable in the MEEREB region. It requires political willingness and cooperation of all stakeholders, includi

Diverging trends in premature mortality and productivity losses of lung and pancreatic cancer in Central and Eastern Europe, 2010-2021.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related premature mortality imposes substantial economic losses through reduced productivity. Lung and pancreatic cancers remain among the leading causes of years of life lost (YLL) in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), yet their indirect economic impact has been insufficiently quantified. This study quantifies years of life lost (YLL) and the associated productivity losses in nine CEE countries between 2010 and 2021. METHODS: YLL data were drawn from the WHO Global Burden of Disease database for Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia,

Sweeping Changes in Marriage, Cohabitation, and Childbearing in Central and Eastern Europe: New Insights from the Developmental Idealism Framework.

In Central and Eastern Europe following the political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s there were dramatic declines in marriage and childbearing, significant increases in nonmarital cohabitation and childbearing, and a movement from reliance on abortion to a reliance on contraception for fertility limitation. Although many explanations have been offered for these trends, we offer new explanations based on ideational influences and the intersection of these ideational influences with structural factors. We focus on the political, economic, social, and cultural histories of the

Carriage of antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae by children in eastern and central Europe--a multicenter study with use of standardized methods.

With use of standardized techniques, a study of nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in children in six Central and Eastern European cities was undertaken during the winter of 1993-1994. Nasopharyngeal swab specimens were collected from 954 children (predominantly under the age of 5 years) who were hospitalized or attending outpatient clinics or day-care centers. Susceptibility of isolates was determined by disk diffusion (on Mueller-Hinton agar with 5% sheep blood). Disks containing 1 micrograms of oxacillin were used to screen for susceptibility to penicillin G. Pneumococci were recovered fr

SOD1 Variants in Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Central Eastern Europe: From Genetic Testing to SOD1 Targeted Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of the most devastating fatal motor neuron diseases, characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. A significant advance in ALS therapy was achieved with the recent European Medicines Agency approval of Tofersen, the first antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) specifically targeting SOD1 mRNA, a key genetic determinant of the disease. Yet, despite its clinical relevance, data on SOD1-ALS in Central Eastern Europe remain scarce. METHODS: Here, we present a multicentric study across six countries-Austria

Metagenomic survey reveals Volzhskoe tick virus in Hyalomma ticks for the first time in western Europe, North-Eastern Spain.

Ticks are reservoirs and vectors of several emerging arboviruses, yet their associated virome remains poorly characterized. Using meta-transcriptomic sequencing, we surveyed Hyalomma marginatum and Rhipicephalus bursa ticks collected from areas with contrasting Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) seroprevalence in wild ungulates in north-eastern Spain, a region with no reported CCHF cases in humans. While CCHFV RNA was not detected, we identified Volzhskoe tick virus (VTV), a recently described member of the class Bunyaviricetes, first identified in Russia, in H. marginatum from the
