The evaluation of Hashimoto's thyroiditis with event-related potentials and magnetic resonance spectroscopy and its relation to cognitive function.

Thyroid dysfunction is very often accompanied by cognitive and affective disorders. The frequency of these disorders in patients with compensated Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is unknown. The aim of the present study was to evaluate brain dysfunction in euthyroid HT patients by means of event-related potentials (ERP) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and to correlate it with cognitive function. 68 patients with HT (59 female, 9 male) and 45 healthy controls were included in the study. All the patients underwent ERP including an analysis of N200 and P300 response parameters. MRS voxels w

P300 investigation of phoneme change detection in dyslexic adults.

A specific impairment in phoneme awareness has been hypothesized as one of the current explanations for dyslexia. We examined attentional shifts towards phonological information as indexed by event-related potentials (ERPs) in normal readers and dyslexic adults. Participants performed a lexical decision task on spoken stimuli of which 80% started with a standard phoneme and 20% with a deviant phoneme. A P300 modulation was expected for deviants in control adults, indicating that the phonological change had been detected. A mild and right-lateralized P300 was observed for deviant stimuli in con

Microsaccadic inhibition and P300 enhancement in a visual oddball task.

It has recently been demonstrated that the presentation of visual oddballs induces a prolonged inhibition of microsaccades. The amplitude of the P300 component in event-related potentials (ERPs) has been shown to be sensitive to the category (target vs. nontarget) of the eliciting stimulus, its overall probability, and the preceding stimulus sequence. In the present study we further specify the functional underpinnings of the prolonged microsaccadic inhibition in the visual oddball task, showing that the stimulus category, the frequency of a stimulus, and the preceding stimulus sequence influe

Attenuated Doors-Locked P300 Amplitude and Elevated Depressive Symptoms: Effects of Age and Sex in Two Independent Samples of Youth.

Deficits in cognitive and reward-related functions, measured via reductions in the P300 and reward positivity (RewP) event-related potential (ERP) components, are commonly observed in adults suffering with depression. Considering higher risk for depression emerges among females in adolescence, examination of the neurological underpinnings of depression during this critical developmental period can help further elucidate our overall understanding of the etiology of depressive disorders. Therefore, the present study sought to first examine associations between doors-locked P300 amplitude, RewP a

Antisocial behaviour and psychopathy: Uncovering the externalizing link in the P3 modulation.

In 2009, Gao and Raine's meta-analysis analysed P3 modulation over the antisocial spectrum. However, some questions remained open regarding the P3 modulation patterns across impulsive and violent manifestations of antisocial behaviour, phenotypic components of psychopathy, and P3 components. A systematic review of 36 studies was conducted (N=3514) to extend previous results and to address these unresolved questions. A clear link between decreased P3 amplitude and antisocial behaviour was found. In psychopathy, dimensional approaches become more informative than taxonomic models. Distinct etiol

Source activation of P300 correlates with negative symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia.

It is well known that the P300 amplitude is reduced in schizophrenia patients, which may reflect the pathophysiology and symptom severity of schizophrenia, particularly related to negative symptoms. However, the relationship between the underlying neural generator of the P300 and symptomatic outcomes are not yet fully understood. This study aimed to verify the abnormal P300 of schizophrenia in terms of its source activation to and further examine the relationship between reduced source activation and symptom severity of patients. For this purpose, the P300 was recorded from 34 patients with sc

Visual information processing in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies presented evidence for magnocellular deficits in dyslexics both in behavioural as well as in electrophysiological data of local electrode sites. We investigated two well-known paradigms (motion-onset and random-dot-kinematogram) with regard to global electrophysiological parameters. METHODS: Twenty-one-channel event-related potentials (ERPs) of 16 dyslectic and 15 control children were analyzed with reference-independent methods. For each paradigm quasi stable microstates were identified by means of a data-driven segmentation procedure and compared between both grou

The interactive effects of alcohol and temazepam on P300 and reaction time.

The present research investigated the separate and interactive effects of the minor tranquilizer, temazepam, and a low dose of alcohol on the amplitude and latency of P300 and on reaction time. Twenty-four participants completed four drug treatments in a repeated measures design. The four drug treatments, organised as a fully repeated 2 x 2 design, included a placebo condition, an alcohol only condition, a temazepam only condition, and an alcohol and temazepam combined condition. Event-related potentials were recorded from midline sites Fz, Cz, and Pz within an oddball paradigm. The results in

Peripheral hearing, brainstem auditory responses, and P300 potentials in Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional study with one-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Auditory dysfunction and cognitive impairment are increasingly recognized as non-motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD), but longitudinal data integrating peripheral hearing, brainstem auditory responses, and cortical auditory-cognitive processing are limited. This study compared pure-tone audiometry, brainstem auditory evoked responses, and auditory P300 potentials between patients with PD and healthy controls at baseline and one year. METHODS: This cross-sectional study with one-year follow-up evaluated pure-tone audiometry, Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), and a

Willingness valued more than ability in partner choice: Insights into behavioral and ERP data.

In human cooperation, people prefer to choose partners with high willingness and ability-while both are valued by partners, individuals often prioritize willingness. Two event-related potential (ERP) experiments were conducted to discern the neural processes underpinning this preference. In the first experiment, participants made a choice between two potential partners and received feedback on the selected partner's willingness to cooperate. This was followed by feedback on the partner's task performance (ability) or a gambling outcome. In contrast, the second experiment first provided feedbac

Visual Selective Attention P300 Source in Frontal-Parietal Lobe: ERP and fMRI Study.

Visual selective attention can be achieved into bottom-up and top-down attention. Different selective attention tasks involve different attention control ways. The pop-out task requires more bottom-up attention, whereas the search task involves more top-down attention. P300, which is the positive potential generated by the brain in the latency of 300 ~ 600 ms after stimulus, reflects the processing of attention. There is no consensus on the P300 source. The aim of present study is to study the source of P300 elicited by different visual selective attention. We collected thirteen participants'

Emotional sensitization highlights the attentional bias in blood-injection-injury phobics: an ERP study.

The presence of an attentional bias towards disorder-related stimuli has not been consistently demonstrated in blood phobics. The present study was aimed at investigating whether or not an attentional bias, as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs), could be highlighted in blood phobics by inducing cognitive-emotional sensitization through the repetitive presentation of different disorder-related pictures. The mean amplitudes of the N100, P200, P300 and late positive potentials to picture onset were assessed along with subjective ratings of valence and arousal in 13 blood phobics and 12 h

Investigation of Emotion Regulation Skills in Migraine Patients Using Electroencephalography (EEG) Method.

Emotion regulation is essential for maintaining daily functioning. Previous studies indicate that individuals with migraine have difficulty identifying emotions and exhibit higher alexithymia scores. The P300 and N400 components, associated with attention and semantic processes, provide insights into neural changes during emotion regulation. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between migraine and emotion regulation by evaluating the P300 and N400 responses obtained during emotion regulation tasks. Participants included individuals with and without a migraine diagnosis. Th

Investigating the role of rumination on reward and punishment processing in an operant conditioning task using event-related potentials.

Pain catastrophizing, and specifically rumination, are key components of the pain experience and a potential predictor of chronic pain. Pain trajectories in chronic pain patients can be influenced by operant conditioning paradigms, with limited knowledge of the mechanisms. Rumination and its impact on event-related potentials (ERPs) in a painful operant conditioning setting, may further elucidate how behavioral and cognitive manipulation can affect somatosensory and nociceptive processing. This study aimed to examine the impact of rumination on ERP responses to auditory feedback cues in a pain

Cumulative effects of subsequent concussions on the neural patterns of young rugby athletes: data from event-related potentials.

Our study aimed at detecting a potential cumulative effect of subsequent concussions on the neural activation patterns of young rugby athletes with or without concussion history. Event-related brain potential (ERP) data from 24 rugby players, 22-year-old on average, were retrospectively examined. All underwent a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT2) during preseason and an on-site ERP task (P300) following a recent concussion event (<48 hours). Sixteen players suffered at least one concussion in the previous 3 years and eight were without self-reported past concussion. While no differences
