AIMS OF THE STUDY: Nerve conduction studies have demonstrated that carbamazepine (CBZ), as well as other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), can affect peripheral nerve conduction; reports on conventional somatosensory evoked potentials and CBZ are controversial. In a previous study, assessing laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) in CBZ-treated patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, we found that LEPs were dampened even after stimulation of the non-painful side, with a strong correlation between LEP latency and daily CBZ dose. No other study investigated the influence of AEDs on LEPs. In order to cl

Myelopathy is a severe complication of cervical spondylosis (CS). We studied 27 consecutive patients with CS referred for evaluation for possible myelopathy using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The findings were compared with those from 20 normal controls. Magnetic resonance imaging was utilized to assess the degree of cord compromise. Central motor conduction time (CMCT) abnormalities showed equivalent diagnostic yield with pectoralis major (PM) recordings, as compared with combined first dorsal interossei and abductor hallucis recordings. Our findings show that CMCT measurement with PM r

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) offer a reliable measurement of peripheral and central sensory conduction through the stimulation of mixed or purely sensitive nerves. If their interest is well known for the evaluation of central pathologies (cerebral or spinal), their precise indication and application field in peripheral neuropathies remains unclear. Some specific diseases, like lumbar or cervical radiculopathies or brachial plexopathies, have been extensively studied and large series have been reported in the literature. Relative sensitivity and specificity of SSEPs and electroneuromy

The modified own constructed device served automatically odour stimulus to nasal cavity allowed registration evoked cortical potentials in 30 patients with normal olfaction sensitivity and identification. It is possibly to differentiate the nerve V receptors responses on odour stimulation (latency range 180-360 ms) as well as nerve I receptors responses (latency range 380-600 ms).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate long-latency motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation in congenital hemiplegia (CH) and to seek for correlation with paretic hand movement deficits.
METHODS: MEPs were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous of both hands in 12 CH patients and 12 age-matched controls; dexterity and upper limb function were quantitatively assessed in both groups.
RESULTS: In CH patients, long-latency MEPs, occurring much later than the commonly reported MEPs, were frequently observed in the paretic and non-paretic hands. Four distinct groups of

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is an estimation of the visual evoked potentials (VEP) in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. The role of the nervous system was pointed out in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Also epidemiologic research confirms that patients with psoriasis are at increased risk of MS development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 30 psoriatic males aged between 18 and 54 was examined. The results were compared with those obtained from a group of 30 healthy age-matched males and they were correlated with the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI), the skin surface area involved,

Many anaesthetics effect the latency and amplitude of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP). We present a patient who underwent two anterior/posterior spine fusions (A/PSF) at age 11 and 12 years old after resection of a spinal astrocytoma. She did have residual neurologic deficits of her lower extremities. SSEPs were unobtainable during the first surgery using an opioid-based anaesthetic. A ketamine-based anaesthetic was used for the second surgery and SSEPs were easily monitored. No other factors seem to have changed between the two surgeries. The anaesthetic management during each procedur

This study examined the N20 and N30 waves of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) from median nerve stimulation at three different stimulation rates (1, 3, and 6 Hz) in patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST). The data were compared with those collected from a group of patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal age-matched subjects. N30 amplitude was significantly decreased in both groups of patients with respect to the controls. The decrease was larger in patients with ST. The N20 wave remained stable. The latencies of both waves were unchanged. When the stimulus r

A study was made of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in 66 patients from 56 families with different forms of spinocerebellar degenerations (SCD). 27 patients with olivopontocerebellar degeneration (OPCD), 13 patients suffering from Friedreich's disease (FD), 10 patients with Pierre Marie's familial ataxia (PMFA), 6 patients with late onset cerebellar atrophy (LOCA), and 10 patients with other forms of SCD were examined. The changes in BAEP turned out extremely diverse which can be regarded as a manifestation of marked phenotypic pleomorphism common to SCD. The most considerable chan

Phasic and established visual evoked potentials (VEP) to homogeneous light field and chess patterns were studied in 25 patients (48 eyes) aged 1.5 months to 9 years with different stages of congenital glaucoma and in 114 age-matched healthy children. Patients with almost absolute and far progressed stages of the disease presented with gross changes of VEP to both large- and small-cell chess patterns. In patients with the initial stages of decompensated congenital glaucoma VEP to mostly large-cell chess patterns were altered. These data evidence the usefulness of examining the VEP to stimuli wi

Late auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded by the odd-ball method in 55 non-deteriorated parkinsonians (NP) and in 27 parkinsonians with cognitive deterioration (CDP), compared with 20 controls (C) and 24 patients with Alzheimer-type senile dementia (ATSD). The latency of P 300 was prolonged in the CDP and ATSD groups (410.72 +/- 24.45 and 433.62 +/- 38.30 respectively; P less than 0.001. The latency of N 100 was prolonged only in the CDP group (106.6 +/- 4.82; P less than 0.001). Late AEPs were also studied in 63 subjects with possible or confirmed disseminated sclerosis (DS) compar

It is debatable whether chiasmatic misrouting of temporal optic-nerve fibers (similar to that found in ocular albinism) is also characteristic of dissociated vertical deviation. Pattern appearance, pattern reversal, and diffuse-flash, monocular full-field visual-evoked cortical potentials were recorded from albino and normal human subjects and subjects with dissociated vertical deviation. Pattern appearance was the most reliable stimulus for evaluating lateralization (albino-type misrouting) in adult albino patients, and diffuse-flash stimulation was almost as reliable in children. Pattern rev

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded in ten patients with the Rett syndrome. Seven cases showed abnormal SEP, and five of these cases showed giant SEP. The five cases with giant SEP were relatively young girls with epilepsy and parieto-central spikes on the electro-encephalogram (EEG). Older patients did not show giant SEP. These giant SEP may be the reflection of cortical hyperexcitability and they may subside as the disease progresses.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed on 25 patients with definite multiple sclerosis. Motor evoked potentials were recorded from the anterior tibial muscle. Central motor conduction time was calculated using the equation (F + M-1)/2 by stimulation of the common peroneal nerve. Motor evoked potentials were capable of detecting subclinical pyramidal tract lesions in multiple sclerosis. In patients with multiple sclerosis, the incidence of abnormality of motor and somatosensory evoked potentials was similar. Central motor conduction time was correlated with overall and pyramidal tract

This review article delineates the physiology and methodological principles of somatosensory (SEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP), as well as our own results in 40 patients monitored during spinal surgery. In 29 patients an intraoperative SEP and in 15 patients a MEP monitoring was performed. Both modalities were applied in 4 patients. 19 patients had an intramedullary tumor, 15 patients had an intradural extramedullary tumor, 4 patients had an extradural mass lesion, and 2 patients had a spinal arteriovenous malformation. Technical problems with SEP monitoring occurred in 3 of 29 cases, pr

This study analyses the possibilities of somato-sensory evoked potentials following trigeminal stimulation in order to classify pain sensations provoked by the trigeminal nerve. 43 patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain and from pain due to carcinoma were investigated. Pain sensations correlated with the responses of the evoked potentials--usually with increased latencies. However, it was not possible to point out specific correlative pathological peaks for individual diseases. Therefore, the judgement of TSEP alterations requires knowledge of each patient's clinica

Dysfunction of brainstem reticular activating centers has been suggested in some sleep disorders, including narcolepsy and sleep terrors. Previous studies have suggested normal brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in narcolepsy and enhancement of long-latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in sleep deprivation and conditions of pathological somnolence. Sleep terrors have not to date been studied neurophysiologically. We recorded early latency BAEPs and long-latency auditory ERPs in 8 patients with narcolepsy and 5 individuals with sleep terrors, and compared them to 10 normal

Sensory input regulation was examined in terms of augmenting/reducing of auditory evoked potentials in 10 patients with somatization disorder (8 males and 2 females) and 10 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The slope of P1-N1 amplitude change as a function of stimulus intensity was greater in patients compared with controls, suggesting an enhanced central nervous system response to sensory input. Taken together with previous findings of a failure to habituate to incoming stimuli in a similar group of patients, and evidence obtained in somatizers of both over-responding to background stimul

Here we report median and common peroneal nerve SEPs in a patient with tabes dorsalis. SEPs were within normal limits following median nerve stimulation, but of prolonged latency for common peroneal nerve. This was in keeping with clinical findings of posterior column involvement confined to the lumbosacral tract and with pathological features of tabetic neurosyphilis.
