Biofeedback is applied to target excessive and/or deficient physiological signals to help patients identifying and self-managing their symptoms. Biofeedback has been employed in psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mainly by using neural signals - neurofeedback. Recently, OCD has been integrated into the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCD&RD) category (body dysmorphic, hoarding, trichotillomania/hair-pulling, and excoriation/skin-picking disorders). The efficacy of biofeedback for OCD&RD is still unknown. Our work provides a complete overview of pu

This paper provides an updated review of the use of antidepressant drugs in dermatology. Some of the psychiatric disorders that are usually comorbid with dermatological disorders and respond to antidepressants include major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder usually secondary to trauma and abuse during early life. Cutaneous symptoms may be the feature of a primary psychiatric disorder, e.g. cutaneous body image problems, dermatitis artefacta, neurotic excoriations and trichotillomania, or psychiatric sy

Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) is a disabling, under-recognized condition in which individuals repeatedly pick at their skin, leading to noticeable tissue damage. There has been no examination as to whether individuals with SPD have different pain thresholds or pain tolerances compared to healthy counterparts. Adults with SPD were examined on a variety of clinical measures including symptom severity and functioning. All participants underwent the cold pressor test. Heart rate, blood pressure, and self-reported pain were compared between SPD participants (n=14) and healthy controls (

BACKGROUND: Amyand's hernia was an unusual condition defined by the presence of an appendix located in the inguinal hernia sac. Its prevalence was 1% of all inguinal hernia in children. The clinical manifestation of Amyand's hernia was depending on hernia's stage, an incarcerated hernia will present with an inguinal mass following by pain and motility disorder. It could lead to abdominal distention in the late stage. The common location of Amyand's hernia was on the right side, the left side was uncommon. Early feeding on infants could provoke symptoms of bowel obstruction (SBO). More than 76%

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of rare genetic diseases that exhibit mechanical fragility of the skin. This condition will result in the occurrence of skin blisters, skin erosions, and skin ulcerations when the skin is subjected to trauma. In this case report, we present a case of EB and multiple skeletal deformities in a 21-year-old female. She came to our clinic with recurrent skin exfoliations and blisters that occurred since she was 4 years old and multiple bones bowing since she was 9 years old. On physical examinations, we found generalized hypopigmentation macule with erythematou

BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as trichotillomania and skin picking disorder, are psychiatric disorders characterized by repetitive grooming that result in hair loss or excoriations. Questions remain as to whether there are racial/ethnic differences in the clinical presentation of BFRBs.
METHODS: We recruited 539 adults with DSM-5 trichotillomania or skin picking disorder. Of these, 76 (14.1%) self-identified as Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic (BAME), while 463 (85.9%) self-identified as white Caucasian (hereafter referred to as non-BAME). BAME and non-BAME parti

Delusional parasitosis manifests as a fixed, false belief that an individual is infested by living organisms. Primary delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric disorder with the delusion as an isolated manifestation, whereas secondary delusional parasitosis is a delusion occurring secondary to a psychiatric disorder, substance use, or medical illness. A 62-year-old woman with no psychiatric history presented to the Emergency Department with two to three months of "whole body itching" and seeing small insects crawling on her skin and in her hair. Exam of her skin and scalp was notable for no appr

IMPORTANCE: Neuromyelitis optica is associated with severe neurodisability if not recognized and treated promptly. Several autoimmune disorders are associated with this condition and may vary in their presentation. It is essential that clinicians are aware of the uncommon presenting features of neuromyelitis optica and associated autoimmune conditions.
OBSERVATIONS: A 53-year-old woman presented with nausea and vomiting and was noted to have an asymptomatic elevated creatinine kinase level, which improved with conservative management. She had a history of iron-deficiency anemia due to long-st

Ulceration of the nose may be inadvertently induced by the patient. Although trigeminal trophic syndrome is an uncommon cause of chronic ulcers, healthcare providers should consider the possibility of this disorder when encountering a patient with nasal ulcerations. Trigeminal trophic syndrome most commonly occurs in older women following therapy for trigeminal neuralgia. The ulcers usually involve the nasal ala and paranasal areas. The clinical vignette of a man with a self-induced nasal ulcer secondary to trigeminal trophic syndrome, which was initially suspected to be skin cancer, is presen

OBJECTIVE: To compare the methods and motives of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSIB) in conduct disorders and schizotypal disorder.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The main group consisted of 91 patients (77.8%), aged 13-24 years, with behavioral disorders and NSIB, who completed questionnaires using the self-harm statements questionnaire. The younger subgroup consisted of 54 patients under the age of 18 with a diagnosis of «Behavior Disorders» (ICD-10 F91), the older subgroup included 37 patients aged 18 years or more with a diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (F60.3). Obsessive-compulsive-related cutaneous disease most often includes trichotillomania, neurotic excoriations and nail biting. In this report, we present two cases of self-inflicted severe wounds that were diagnosed as secondary to obsessive-compulsive behaviour. Patients were middle-aged females who presented with deep cutaneous ulcers that were acknowledgedly maintained through repetitive manipulation. Obsessive-compulsive-related cutaneous disease is better treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants in higher dosages than those used to treat depression. Both patients were treate

Eight dogs with cutaneous lesions, clinical signs and cytological findings compatible with bacterial overgrowth syndrome were compared with four healthy dogs. The affected dogs were treated for 28 days with 30 mg/kg/day cephalexin. The results showed that the syndrome was a superficial cutaneous disorder characterised by marked pruritus, greasy seborrhoea, offensive odour, erythema, lichenification, hyperpigmentation, excoriations and alopecia involving principally the ventral aspect of the body, but no papules, pustules, epidermal collarettes or crusts; it was caused by overgrowths of Staphyl

A whole spectrum of various clinical and laboratory disorders in patients with skin changes, may present systemic disease manifestations. Serological parameters correlate with the progression of the disease. Authors present cases with unusual skin lesions and abnormal laboratory findings, that were presumed to be manifestations of the systemic disease progression. The first case is a report of a patient age 44, female with dermatomyositis that started suddenly from full health with generalized linear bluish dark erythematous lesion like excoriations, periocular heliotrope violaceous to dusky e

Psychodermatologic disorders are conditions involving an interaction between the mind and the skin. Correlation between psychiatric and dermatological disorders is a highly complex relation considering etiology, diagnostic procedures and treatment. There are three major groups of psychodermatological disorders: psychosomatic (psychophysiologic) disorders, primary psychiatric disorders and secondary psychiatric disorders. Psychosomatic disorders are dermatological diseases which can be exacerbated or worsened by emotional stress, but are not caused directly by stress. Emotional stress can exace

BACKGROUND: The lifetime prevalence of obsessive - compulsive disorder (OCD) is currently estimated at 2 - 3% and the prevalence in first-degree family members is estimated to range between 10 and 11%. Separating OCD from other anxiety disorders and including it into the new "obsessive - compulsive and related disorders" (OCRDs) category has had a dramatic impact on the diagnosis, while also contributing to the better understanding of the genetics of these disorders. Indeed, grouping OCD with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and body-focused repetitive behaviors such as trichotillomania (hair p

The author believes that psychocutaneous medicine has indeed come of age and is being incorporated into mainstream medical practice. Patients presenting to dermatologists today are more sophisticated and are frequently dissatisfied with traditional medical therapies. They actively seek alternative approaches and adjuncts to standard treatments. In contrast to many other "alternative" (or) "holistic" treatments offered through non-medical venues, dermatologists can assure their patients that controlled studies support the efficacy of psychocutaneous techniques in improving many dermatologic con

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic eczematous disorder characterized by intense itchiness. Systemic therapies for AD include Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors and various biological agents. The effects of transitioning from the JAK1 inhibitor, upadacitinib, to the anti-interleukin 13 antibody, tralokinumab, remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the transition from 15 mg of upadacitinib to tralokinumab in patients with moderate-to-severe AD.
METHODS: This analysis included 20 patients who switched from 15 mg of upadacitinib to tralokinumab due to an inadequate response or a

INTRODUCTION: ARC (arthrogryposis, renal dysfunction, and cholestasis) syndrome is an uncommon multisystem disorder that entails a very poor prognosis. It is caused by mutations in either VPS33B or VIPAS39 gene, both playing a key role in intracellular trafficking. We report two siblings born to first cousin parents with a novel mutation in VPS33B who have both shown prolonged survival.
CASES PRESENTATION: The index patient presented with bilateral hip dysplasia and arthrogryposis, failure to thrive, undernourishment, developmental delay, and low gamma-glutamyl transferase cholestasis. She at

The self-induced dermatoses (such as trichotillomania, pathologic skin picking or neurotic excoriations, dermatitis artefacta, onychophagia and onychotillomania), which are caused as a result of excessive manipulation of the skin, hair, and nails by the patient, can contribute to significant morbidity and can even complicate the course of a primary dermatologic condition such as acne (eg, in acne excoriée) and some pruritic dermatoses. Reports on the self-induced dermatoses in the past decade have tended to focus upon the specific motor behaviors involved in self-inducing the lesions (ie, skin

Psychocutaneous disorders (PCDs) in children and adolescents lie at the intersection of dermatology and psychiatry and include primary psychiatric conditions with cutaneous manifestations, dermatologic diseases with psychiatric sequelae, and functional or overlap syndromes. Despite substantial psychosocial burden and chronic morbidity, pediatric PCDs remain under-recognized and inconsistently managed. We conducted a narrative review of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science (2000-2025), including epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, meta-analyses, and consensus statements addr
