The 6-Minute Frame Running Test - A Field-based Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a diverse childhood-onset motor disability that varies significantly in severity and impact. Individuals with more severe forms of CP, particularly those with whole-body involvement, often face substantial barriers to physical activity. These barriers are compounded by the limited availability of exercise options that can accommodate their specific needs. The forms of physical activity that may be available typically involve low levels of aerobic demand, which may not be sufficient to maintain and/or improve cardiovascular health. However, Frame Running, a parasport perf

[Hyperventilation test in coronary disease: a comparison with a bicycle ergometer exercise test. Report of 100 cases].

A hundred cases have been studied and divided into three categories:--60 normal subjects;--30 coronary subjects with a positive exercise test;--10 subjects with defective nervous control of the circulation; using the exercise test, we studied the effects of hyperventilation on repolarisation of the ventricle. In the normal subjects there was no ischaemic depression of the ST segment, but there were minor changes in repolarisation which affected the T wave in 73% of subjects and were essentially posterior in distribution. In the coronary subjects, we found three with ischaemic depression of the

Exercise-induced desaturation in subjects with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis: laboratory-based tests versus field-based exercise tests.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the validity of field walking tests to identify exercise-induced hypoxemia and to compare cardiorespiratory responses and perceived effort between laboratory-based and field-based exercise tests in subjects with bronchiectasis. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 72 non-oxygen-dependent participants (28 men; mean age = 48.3 ± 14.5 years; and mean FEV1 = 54.1 ± 23.4% of the predicted value). The participants underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on a treadmill and constant work-rate exercise testing (CWRET) on the same day (1 h apart). In a

Prediction of oxygen uptake at peak exercise in patients with inflammatory bowel disease using submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the steep ramp test as a practical field test.

PURPOSE: To develop predictive equations for oxygen uptake at peak exercise (VO2peak) measured during a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using submaximal CPET-derived parameters and the steep ramp test, along with demographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: This study included patients with IBD in remission or with mild-to-moderate disease activity who performed a CPET and a steep ramp test within 14 days. Submaximal CPET-derived parameters included oxygen uptake (VO2) at the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) and oxygen uptake

Prognostic relevance of baseline exercise stress test in RYR2-related CPVT.

AIMS: Exercise stress test (EST) represents the gold standard for diagnosis of catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT). We aimed to determine the relevance of exercise induced VT for the occurrence of LAE at follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS: In RYR2-related CPVT patients who underwent a baseline EST, we assessed the incidence and severity of ventricular arrhythmias (VA). Data were analysed using logistic regression models and Cox proportional hazards models. The primary outcome was the occurrence of life-threatening arrhythmic event (LAE; composite of sudden cardiac death,

Cardiopulmonary exercise test to detect cardiac dysfunction from pulmonary vascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac dysfunction from pulmonary vascular disease causes characteristic findings on cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). We tested the accuracy of CPET for detecting inadequate stroke volume (SV) augmentation during exercise, a pivotal manifestation of cardiac limitation in patients with pulmonary vascular disease. METHODS: We reviewed patients with suspected pulmonary vascular disease in whom CPET and right heart catheterization (RHC) measurements were taken at rest and at anaerobic threshold (AT). We correlated CPET-determined O2·pulseAT/O2·pulserest with RHC-determined SV

Discriminating Circulatory Problems From Deconditioning: Echocardiographic and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Discriminating circulatory problems with reduced stroke volume (SV) from deconditioning, in which the muscles cannot consume oxygen normally, by gas exchange parameters is difficult. METHODS: We performed combined stress echocardiography (SE) and cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) in 110 patients (20 with normal effort capacity, 54 with attenuated SV response, and 36 with deconditioning) to evaluate multiple hemodynamic parameters and oxygen content difference (A-V.o2 Diff) in four predefined activity levels to assess which of the gas measures may help in the discrimination. 4-Second Exercise Test: Reference Values for Ages 18-81 Years.

BACKGROUND: Physiological reflexes modulated primarily by the vagus nerve allow the heart to decelerate and accelerate rapidly after a deep inspiration followed by rapid movement of the limbs. This is the physiological and pharmacologically validated basis for the 4-s exercise test (4sET) used to assess the vagal modulation of cardiac chronotropism. OBJECTIVE: To present reference data for 4sET in healthy adults. METHODS: After applying strict clinical inclusion/exclusion criteria, 1,605 healthy adults (61% men) aged between 18 and 81 years subjected to 4sET were evaluated between 1994 and 2

Slow-release gallopamil evaluated by exercise test and long-term electrocardiography.

The effects of slow-release gallopamil (100 mg b.i.d.) were studied on exercise-induced ST-segment depression as well as on spontaneous myocardial ischemia detected by long-term electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring for 48 h in 26 patients with coronary artery disease and angina pectoris. Eight patients had to be excluded (because of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in four patients, development of unstable angina pectoris in three patients, and frequent ventricular premature beats in one patient). In the remaining 18 patients, gallopamil led to an increase of work load (W x min) evaluated by bic

The six-minute walk--an adequate exercise test for pacemaker patients?

In many pacemaker patients bicycle and treadmill ergometry are not practicable. As an alternative, we performed a 6-minute walk on a 20-m corridor in 97 pacemaker patients, who were asked to walk as far as possible determining their speed by themselves. Results were compared with those of bicycle ergometry in 42 of these patients and with treadmill exercise of a group of 92 other pacemaker patients. In the 6-minute walk, performance and maximal heart rate were slightly lower (49 +/- 18 W; 96 +/- 23 beats/min) than in bicycle (57 +/- 16 W; 110 +/- 26 beats/min) and treadmill ergometry (50 +/- 3

Ischemic exercise test: failure to detect partial expression of McArdle's disease.

The forearm ischemic exercise test (FIET) is a very important clinical tool for evaluation of patients suspected to have a metabolic disorder of muscle function. Failure to elevate lactate in blood washed out from ischemically exercised muscles confirms an abnormality of glycolytic metabolism. A normal increase of lactate on FIET is assumed to rule out a disorder of glycolytic metabolism. Two patients with low levels of muscle phosphorylase are presented who produced a normal elevation of lactate on FIET. This suggests that, although the FIET is capable of identifying patients with absence of

A simple exercise test for the prediction of relative heat tolerance.

A medical screening exercise test is presented which accurately predicts relative heat tolerance during work in very hot environments. The test consisted of 15-20 min of exercise at a standard absolute intensity of about 600 kcal/hr (140W) with the subject wearing a vapor-barrier suit. Five minutes after the subject exercised, recovery heart rate was measured. When this heart rate is used, a physiological limit (+/- approximately 5 min) can be predicted with 95% confidence for the most intense work-heat conditions found in nuclear power stations. In addition, site health and safety personnel c

Serum potassium exercise test in the diagnosis of familial periodic paralysis.

We studied the serum potassium rise during a 30-min 100 W exercise test in 5 controls, 3 familial periodic paralysis (FPP) patients and their 2 symptom-less brothers. The controls showed a steep and high exercise response (the 10-min rise was 0.59 +/- 0.13 mmol/l and the maximal rise was 0.71 +/- 0.11 mmol/l). The FPP patients showed a slow and flat exercise response (the 10-min rise was 0.08 +/- 0.11 mmol/l and the maximal rise was 0.17 +/- 0.12 mmol/l, P less than 0.001 for both values). The 2 symptom-less brothers showed a similar divergence. The values of 0.05 mmol/l (10-min) and 0.25 mmol

Electrocardiographic Characteristics of Brugada Syndrome Type I During Exercise Stress Test.

INTRODUCTION: Brugada syndrome (BS) is a genetic channelopathy characterized by an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the absence of structural heart disease. Prognostic stratification is necessary to determine which patients are candidates for implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The present study aims to evaluate EKG changes during exercise stress tests in patients with BS and to identify any poor prognosis variables. METHODS: This was an observational, case-control study. Three comparison groups were created: patients with Type 1 BS with or without prior arrhythmic ev

Exercise Stress Electrocardiography Using the Two-Minute Jump Test in Children.

Although the treadmill and cycle ergometer are commonly used for exercise stress electrocardiography (ECG) testing, they are often difficult to perform with children. We herein evaluated the utility and safety of the 2-minute jump test (2MJT) as a simple, alternative exercise test. One hundred patients, including 60 male patients, with an average age at study commencement of 10.7±3.5 years (mean±standard deviation) and with no exercise restriction who underwent a cardiac check-up between November 2020 and March 2022 at the study center were included. After recording their resting ECG, they jum
