BACKGROUND: This study was carried out in order to obtain information on galactose-containing glycoconjugates in the lens and ciliary body of human eyes with capsular glaucoma and thus on the etiopathogenesis of exfoliation syndrome.
METHODS: Six formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human eyes with capsular glaucoma and six control eyes were studied using a panel of 11 biotinylated lectins with extended binding sites to galactose- and N-acetylgalactosamine-containing glycoconjugates. Both pepsin and neuraminidase pretreatments were performed.
RESULTS: Gal(beta 1-->3)GalNAc-reactive peanut (PNA)

Dapsone (4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone, DDS), a potent anti-inflammatory agent, is widely used in the treatment of leprosy and several chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Dapsone therapy rarely results in development of dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome, which is characterized by fever, hepatitis, generalized exfoliative dermatitis, and lymphadenopathy. Here, we describe the case of an 11-year-old Korean boy who initially presented with high fever, a morbilliform skin rash, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and leukopenia after 6 weeks of dapsone intake. Subsequently, he exhibited

Exfoliative toxin type B is produced by bacteriophage group II strains of Staphylococcus aureus and is a causative agent of staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome. In addition to exfoliative toxin B, most isolates also produce a bacteriocin and are immune to the action of the bacteriocin. These phenotypes, as well as resistance to cadmium, were lost after elimination of a 37.5-kilobase plasmid, pRW001, from S. aureus UT0007. Transduction and transformation showed that pRW001 carries the structural genes for four phenotypic characteristics of S. aureus UT0007: (i) exfoliative toxin B production,

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is an extensive desquamative erythmatous condition caused by the Staphylococcus aureus exfoliative toxin. Although adult cases of SSSS are rare, the mortality rate is high. We report herein on a case of SSSS due to long-term catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by exfoliative toxin B, which produced methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A 64-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a high fever and generalized exfoliative dermatitis. He had an implanted port vascular access device in his left arm. The port was removed because it

Exfoliative toxin A, produced by Staphylococcus aureus, causes blisters in bullous impetigo and its more generalized form, staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome. The toxin shows exquisite specificity in causing loss of cell adhesion only in the superficial epidermis. Although exfoliative toxin A has the structure of a serine protease, a target protein has not been identified. Desmoglein (Dsg) 1, a desmosomal cadherin that mediates cell-cell adhesion, may be the target of exfoliative toxin A, because it is the target of autoantibodies in pemphigus foliaceus, in which blisters form with identical

UNLABELLED: Introduction. The staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is an acute exfoliation of the skin caused by exfoliative toxins A and B. Although Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of burn wound infection, SSSS following burn wound infection is rare. Method. A retrospective review of all SSSS cases admitted to a regional burns service between January 2008 and January 2012 was undertaken. Results. Two cases of SSSS were reported during this time period as occurring following burns injury. The first case was a 17-month-old boy who had been hospitalized for a conservative treatment of 6%

We investigated the ability of staphylococcal enterotoxins A and B, exfoliative toxins A and B, and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 to activate macrophages. All of the toxins tested had the potential to stimulate tumoricidal activity in peritoneal macrophages from lipopolysaccharide-responsive C3HeB/FeJ mice. In contrast, none of the toxins activated cytotoxicity in lipopolysaccharide-unresponsive macrophages from C3H/HeJ mice. We also studied toxin stimulation of monokine secretion. Staphylococcal enterotoxin A, toxic shock syndrome toxin 1, and both exfoliative toxins triggered C3HeB/FeJ macrop

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is an extensive desquamative erythematous condition caused by exfoliative toxins of Staphylococcus aureus. This disease usually affects neonates and generally responds rapidly to antibiotic therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a premature baby boy, weighing 1030 g, born after 26 6/7 weeks gestation, who developed two episodes of Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome on days 19 and 48 of life. Cultures obtained during the first period did not reveal Staphylococcus aureus, but diagnosis was based on typical clinical grounds. Altho

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is systematic microfibrylopathy associated with abnormalities of the accumulation of the extracellular matrix - buildup of protein clumps of abnormal basal membrane of trabecular epithelium, iris, ciliary body and lens capsule. The exfoliation material accumulates in anterior segment of a human eye (anterior lens capsule, ciliary zonule, ciliary body, iris, trabecular, anterior hyaloid membrane, conjunctiva) and other organs such as heart, connective tissue of lungs, vessels, skin, gallbladder, kidneys, liver, urinary bladder and meninges. People with PEX are m

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is a common ocular condition often associated with the need for intraocular surgery. Although results of cataract and glaucoma filtering surgery in eyes with PEX in the early stages of the disease may be comparable to those in eyes without PEX, in the later stages morbidity is significantly increased due to periocular surgical complications and the outcome is worse. Surgical and postoperative difficulties are often multifactorial and are directly related to the pathological changes of PEX on intraocular structures. Recent years have seen a large increase in the

A 63-year-old male patient had severe exfoliative dermatitis (erythroderma) which led to the discovery of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The possibility of paraneoplastic erythroderma is discussed. Although such an aetiology is rare, 5 cases with a similar paraneoplastic syndrome have been previously reported, which cannot be considered as a merely fortuitous association of exfoliative dermatitis and visceral cancer.

This epidemiological study is completed on island Rab, located in North Adriatic Sea. For this study it is important that Adriatic Sea has one of the highest solar radiations in geographical area of Europe. The aim of this epidemiological study is to estimate correlation between incidence of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and exposure of sunlight in two different populations on island Rab. In the first group of population of island Rab, agriculturists and fishermen (n = 1300), incidence of AMD was in 18%, but in urban population only 2.5%. It is very interesting that correlation exists

Bullous impetigo and its generalized form, staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome (SSSS), are highly contagious, blistering skin diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection. Virulent strains of the bacteria produce exfoliative toxins (ETs) that cause the loss of keratinocyte cell-cell adhesion in the superficial epidermis. Recent studies have indicated that the three isoforms of ETs, i.e., ETA, ETB, and ETD, are glutamate-specific serine proteases that specifically and efficiently cleave a single peptide bond in the extracellular region of human and mouse desmoglein 1 (Dsg1), a desmosomal

Key tissue targets in treating exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and the associated glaucoma include lens, iris, and ciliary body, which produce the exfoliative material, and the trabecular meshwork, which may be impaired by the exfoliative material. In addition to antiglaucoma drug therapy, strategies for treating the disease include approaches for preventing formation of exfoliative material as well as those aimed at digesting exfoliative material. A variety of drug molecules including small molecules, protein drugs, and nucleic acids are potential candidates for treating XFS. Potential drug classe

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a rare yet well-known exfoliative skin syndrome. It involves extensive desquamated areas caused by an exfoliative toxin from Staphylococcus aureus. The typical presentation of SSSS allows for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Knowing and understanding the prevalence, pathophysiology, risk factors, and diagnosis of SSSS will ensure that infants being treated and cared for by neonatal nurses and neonatal nurse practitioners will receive appropriate, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary care while in the NICU. The purpose of this case rev
