Military cold weather operations (CWOs) introduce a range of challenges, including extreme temperatures, strong winds, difficult terrain, and exposure to snow, ice, and water. Personnel undertaking these missions face a heightened risk of cold weather injury (CWI), such as hypothermia, freezing cold injuries, and non-freezing cold injuries. The risk of these injuries is influenced by various factors, including age, sex, and body composition. To ensure optimal and safe performance in CWOs, it is crucial to implement effective preventive measures against CWI. This article emphasizes the most per

Winter swimming is a stressful condition of whole-body exposure to cold water; however, winter swimmers have achieved variable degrees of adaptation to cold. The question arises whether this extreme sport activity has any health benefits or whether it may confer potentially harmful effects. As a form of aerobic exercise, albeit more strenuous when performed in cold water, winter swimming may increase body tolerance to stressors and achieve body hardening. When practiced by individuals who are in good general health adopting a regular, graded and adaptive mode, winter swimming seems to confer c

We investigated cold hypersensitivity and activity in 81 adults (male/female 76/5), 6 to 10 years after finger replantation/revascularisation (mean age at injury 43 (SD 15) years). Questionnaires included the McCabe Cold Sensitivity Severity Scale, Potential Work-Exposure Scale and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Eighty per cent of the respondents were cold hypersensitive; 20% were severely or extremely cold hypersensitive. Of the 74 patients employed at injury, 7% had changed work and 4% were not working due to cold hypersensitivity. The median score for cold expo

PURPOSE: Cold intolerance may impose great changes on patients' lifestyle, work, and leisure activities, and it is often severely disabling. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and severity of cold intolerance in patients with injury-related neuromas of the upper extremity and improvement of symptoms after surgical treatment. Furthermore, we try to find predictors for cold intolerance and correlations with other symptoms.
METHODS: Between January 2006 and February 2009, 34 consecutive patients with surgically treated neuroma-specific neuropathic pain of the upper extremities were se

BACKGROUND: Evidence linking extreme temperature exposure to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) remains inconsistent, with limited synthesis on exposure timing and climatic vulnerability.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify associations of extreme heat, cold, and season-related exposures with HDP, preeclampsia (PE), and gestational hypertension (GH), and to identify critical windows and vulnerable climate zones.
METHODS: We systematically searched five databases up to February 2026. Observational studies (≥500 participants) reporting HDP outcomes with recognized diagnostic criteria were included.

Extreme temperature events are increasing in frequency and intensity, yet their effects on autoimmune diseases remain poorly understood. Using nationwide inpatient claims from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (2002 -2023), we assessed short-term associations between extreme temperatures and hospitalizations for 59 autoimmune conditions. A time-stratified case-crossover design with conditional logistic regression was applied. Heat waves and cold spells were defined using district-specific temperature percentiles (95th, 97.5th, and 99th for heat; 5th, 2.5th, and 1st for cold) and sin

Climate change threatens mental health, especially for the more than one billion residents in informal settlements worldwide. Utilizing longitudinal data collected from women in households in two of Nairobi's largest informal settlements, we examined the mental health impacts of extreme weather and moderating effects of income. Eighteen monthly surveys (September 2022-February 2024) captured experiences of heat, cold, drought, heavy rain, and flooding alongside symptoms of anxiety and depression. Heat, cold, and drought were associated with increased anxiety and depression while heavy rain red

Developing high-performance aqueous alkaline batteries for extreme environments remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a triamino-substituted hexaazatrinaphthalene (HATN-3NH2) as a tailor-made anode for alkaline systems. Unlike hydroxyl-functionalized analogues that suffer from rapid dissolution in alkaline electrolytes, the amino group ensures exceptional chemical stability while its electron-donating nature effectively lowers the redox potential to -1.12 vs. Hg/HgO. Crucially, the introduced amino groups construct a robust intermolecular hydrogen-bond network that significantly en

Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane composition, altered metabolic processes, unique mechanisms of oxygen transport and utilization, and distinctive cellular stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge of the physiological adaptations of Antarctic fish, focusing on the mech

Identification of physiological processes setting thermal tolerance limits is essential to describing adaptive response to temperature changes. We used the North American Daphnia pulex complex, which makes a remarkable model for comparative physiology as it is composed of clones differing in heat tolerance and ploidies, and with a wide geographic distribution. The fatty acid composition of 18 diploid and triploid D. pulex clones acclimated to 16°C and 24°C was measured and compared with their tolerance to extreme high and low temperatures (CTmax and CTmin, respectively). Eicosapentaenoic acid

Stress is a nonspecific response to adverse circumstances and chronic stress can destroy homeostasis, leading to various primary diseases. Although chronic cold stress is becoming increasingly important for individuals living or working in extreme environments, the risk of associated disorders of the central nervous system remains unstudied. Here, male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to a temperature of 4 °C, for three hours each day for one, two or three weeks. Glial cell activation, neuronal structure, and neuroinflammation were then evaluated by western blotting, immunofluorescence, Nissl stainin

Extreme climate events can substantially affect gross primary productivity (GPP) and the stability of carbon sinks of wetlands by altering hydrothermal conditions. However, national-scale evidence on how wetland GPP responds to different types of extreme climate events across China remains insufficient to support adaptive wetland ecosystem management. We focused on wetland vegetation across China and combined sensitivity analysis with partial correlation analysis to quantify the response intensity and dominant controls of wetland GPP to extreme climate events during 2001-2023, and further anal

Extremophilic microorganisms live in extreme environmental conditions such as high or low temperature, high or low pH, high concentration of salt and accordingly are classified as thermophilic, psychrophilic, alkaliphilic, acidophilic and halophilic respectively. They adapt themselves to the extreme conditions by producing novel biomolecules like heat shock proteins, cold active enzymes, compatible solutes and exopolysaccharides. Extremophilic microorganisms maintain their cellular integrity with the help of exopolysaccharide (EPS) which constitutes slime or a hydrated matrix that keeps the ce

Frigophobia is a condition in which patients report coldness of extremities leading to a morbid fear of death. It has been reported as a rare culture-related psychiatric syndrome in Chinese populations. An extensive survey of the literature yielded only six case reports. The present paper describes a series of 109 patients with frigophobia in Sri Lanka. The common clinical presentation was of patients initially examining their extremities for cold sensations, and then, with the onset of fear, covering themselves in layers of clothing, applying emollients, and staying near an open fire in an ef

The genetic basis of the difference in cold shock tolerance between the southern temperate Drosophila virilis and its boreal relative D. lummei is studied. After adult eclosion, the parental stocks, reciprocal F1 and backcross hybrids were pretreated for eight days at 18 degrees C or at 6 degrees C. The cold shock used consisted of fast cooling to -10 degrees C and exposure to this temperature for varying lengths of time. D. lummei tolerated such exposure for 40-50% longer than did D. virilis (100-135% after acclimation). Reciprocal F1 females, differing only in their maternal cytoplasm deviat

Relatively warm environments caused by global warming enhance the productivity of aquaculture activities in tropical/subtropical regions; however, the intermittent cold stress (ICS) caused by negative Arctic Oscillation can still result in major economic losses. In contrast to endotherms, ectothermic fishes experience ambient temperature as an abiotic factor that is central to performance and survival. Therefore, the occurrence of extreme temperatures caused by climate change has ignited a surge of scientific interest from ecologists, economists and physiologists. In this study, we test the tr

The effects of short-term as well as long-term antioxidant supplementation on exercise performance in the heat or the cold are unknown. Based on our recent studies we hypothesized that short-term supplementation with alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) would decrease oxidative stress but without significant impairment of maximal exercise performance in the heat or the cold. During a 5-week period young and welltrained participants performed 5 incremental treadmill tests to exhaustion under different temperature conditions (normal: 20°C, cold: +7°C, heat: +33°C) a

Extreme climate events such as droughts, cold snaps, and hurricanes can be powerful agents of natural selection, producing acute selective pressures very different from the everyday pressures acting on organisms. However, it remains unknown whether these infrequent but severe disruptions are quickly erased by quotidian selective forces, or whether they have the potential to durably shape biodiversity patterns across regions and clades. Here, we show that hurricanes have enduring evolutionary impacts on the morphology of anoles, a diverse Neotropical lizard clade. We first demonstrate a transge

BACKGROUND: Previous research on functional impairments due to vascular effects in workers with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) has focused on the upper extremities with little attention to the lower extremities.
AIMS: To examine the severity and factors associated with cold intolerance and sensitivity in the hands and feet of workers with HAVS.
METHODS: A survey and retrospective chart review were used to collect demographics, work conditions and disease characteristics on workers undergoing HAVS assessments. Data also included workers' scores on the Cold Intolerance Symptom Severity (CI
