The relative sizes of nuclei in the oculomotor complex vary by order and behaviour in birds.

Eye movements are a critical component of visually guided behaviours, allowing organisms to scan the environment and bring stimuli of interest to regions of acuity in the retina. Although the control and modulation of eye movements by cranial nerve nuclei are highly conserved across vertebrates, species variation in visually guided behaviour and eye morphology could lead to variation in the size of oculomotor nuclei. Here, we test for differences in the size and neuron numbers of the oculomotor nuclei among birds that vary in behaviour and eye morphology. Using unbiased stereology, we measured

Effects of unilateral midbrain lesions on gaze (eye and head) movements.

The rostral midbrain, especially the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (RIMLF) and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC), plays an important role in the control of eye movements. Although the effect of midbrain lesions on eye movements is well investigated, little is known about its effect on head movements. In this study, we measured eye and head (gaze) movements in five patients with unilateral, acute midbrain lesions and nine healthy controls. In all patients, vertical eye velocity was reduced as a result of the lesion compared to healthy subjects, whereas

Latencies of stimulus-driven eye movements are shorter in dyslexic subjects.

Eye movements latencies toward peripherally presented stimuli were measured in 10-year-old dyslexic and control children. Dyslexic subjects, previously found to be oversensitive to stimulation of the magnocellular channel, showed reduced latencies as compared to normally reading controls. An attention shifting task was also used which showed no group differences in latencies of eye movements. The data are discussed in terms of the hypothesis of magnocellular system alteration and attention dysfunction in dyslexia. Additionally, sex differences in eye movement latencies were found and are discu

Cerebellum-mediated trainability of eye and head movements for dynamic gazing.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gaze stabilization exercises (GSEs) improve eye and head movements and whether low-frequency cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) inhibits GSE trainability. METHODS: 25 healthy adults (real rTMS, n = 12; sham rTMS, n = 13) were recruited. Real or sham rTMS was performed for 15 min (1 Hz, 900 stimulations). The center of the butterfly coil was set 1 cm below the inion in the real rTMS. Following stimulation, 10 trials of 1 min of a GSE were conducted at 1 min intervals. In the GSE, the subjects were instructed to stand upright and hor

Motion sickness occurrence does not correlate with nystagmus characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis whereby eye movements as such may be an important factor in the development of motion sickness (MS). The horizontal eye movements of 27 subjects were measured during earth vertical axis rotation (EVAR) and during off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Two groups were set up, one including subjects who suffered severe MS during the test, and the other including subjects with no MS symptoms. We found no differences in nystagmus parameters (EVAR: gain and time constant; OVAR: eye velocity modulation and eye position modulation) between the MS and t

Field independence, lateralization and defensive style.

This study investigated the relationship between field independence and defense clustering as measured by the Defense Mechanisms Inventory and lateral eye movements. Subjects had previously been classified either as hysterical or obsessive style by the Rorschach and WAIS Comprehension subtest. Previous findings indicate that these subjects have a preferred direction of lateral eye movement in a questioning format (hysterical style = left; obsessive style = right). This study found no relationship between field independence and defense clustering and lateral eye movements. To the extent that ey

Impaired saccadic eye movements in multiple sclerosis are related to altered functional connectivity of the oculomotor brain network.

BACKGROUND: Impaired eye movements in multiple sclerosis (MS) are common and could represent a non-invasive and accurate measure of (dys)functioning of interconnected areas within the complex brain network. The aim of this study was to test whether altered saccadic eye movements are related to changes in functional connectivity (FC) in patients with MS. METHODS: Cross-sectional eye movement (pro-saccades and anti-saccades) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from the Amsterdam MS cohort were included from 176 MS patients and 33 healthy controls. FC was calculated between all regions of the

Dynamic accommodation measurement using Purkinje reflections and machine learning.

Quantifying eye movement is important for diagnosing various neurological and ocular diseases as well as AR/VR displays. We developed a simple setup for real-time dynamic gaze tracking and accommodation measurements based on Purkinje reflections, which are the reflections from front and back surfaces of the cornea and the eye lens. We used an accurate eye model in ZEMAX to simulate the Purkinje reflection positions at different focus distances of the eye, which matched the experimental data. A neural network was trained to simultaneously predict vergence and accommodation using data collected

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing treatment for panic disorder: a controlled outcome and partial dismantling study.

Forty-three outpatients with DSM-III-R (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd Ed., revised; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) panic disorder were randomly assigned to receive 6 sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), the same treatment but omitting the eye movement, or to a waiting list. Posttest comparisons showed EMDR to be more effective in alleviating panic and panic-related symptoms than the waiting-list procedure. Compared with the same treatment without the eye movement, EMDR led to greater improvement on 2 of 5 primary outcome measur

Variability of eye movements when viewing dynamic natural scenes.

How similar are the eye movement patterns of different subjects when free viewing dynamic natural scenes? We collected a large database of eye movements from 54 subjects on 18 high-resolution videos of outdoor scenes and measured their variability using the Normalized Scanpath Saliency, which we extended to the temporal domain. Even though up to about 80% of subjects looked at the same image region in some video parts, variability usually was much greater. Eye movements on natural movies were then compared with eye movements in several control conditions. "Stop-motion" movies had almost identi

Visually guided eye movements reduce postural sway in dyslexic children.

Dyslexic children present poorer postural control performance than their peers, perhaps due to different patterns of eye movements. It has been shown that guided eye movements decrease magnitude of body sway in young and older adults, but there is no evidence whether the search for visual information that occurs during eye movements affects postural control in dyslexic children. The aim of this study was to examine the use of guided eye movements and its pattern in the performance of postural control of dyslexic children during upright quiet stance. Twelve children with dyslexia (10.8 ± 1.1 ye

Psychomotor impairment and cognitive disturbances induced by neuroleptics.

Reviews of the literature have failed to demonstrate any consistent effects of typical or atypical neuroleptics on psychomotor or cognitive function in schizophrenic patients. Better methods and study designs are required, and healthy volunteer studies are necessary to control for variables due to schizophrenic psychopathology. Eye movements are a sensitive, reliable and relatively pure measure of attention and arousal. Two volunteer studies of the effects of single doses of haloperidol (2,4 and 6 mg), chlorpromazine (50 mg) and remoxipride (100 and 150 mg) on saccadic and smooth pursuit eye m

Abnormalities of the oculomotor function in type 1 diabetes and diabetic neuropathy.

AIMS: Abnormalities in the oculomotor system may represent an early sign of diabetic neuropathy and are currently poorly studied. We designed an eye-tracking-based test to evaluate oculomotor function in patients with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: We used the SRLab-Tobii TX300 Eye tracker®, an eye-tracking device, coupled with software that we developed to test abnormalities in the oculomotor system. The software consists of a series of eye-tracking tasks divided into 4 classes of parameters (Resistance, Wideness, Pursuit and Velocity) to evaluate both smooth and saccadic movement in different di

Visual field recovery after vision restoration therapy (VRT) is independent of eye movements: an eye tracker study.

AIM: It has been argued that patients with visual field defects compensate for their deficit by making more frequent eye movements toward the hemianopic field and that visual field enlargements found after vision restoration therapy (VRT) may be an artefact of such eye movements. In order to determine if this was correct, we recorded eye movements in hemianopic subjects before and after VRT. METHODS: Visual fields were measured in subjects with homonymous visual field defects (n=15) caused by trauma, cerebral ischemia or haemorrhage (lesion age >6 months). Visual field charts were plotted usi

Virtual reality-based measurement of ocular deviation in strabismus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Strabismus is an eye movement disorder in which shows the abnormal ocular deviation. Cover tests have mainly been used in the clinical diagnosis of strabismus for treatment. However, the whole process depends on the doctor's level of experience, which could be subjected to several factors. In this study, an automated technique for measurement of ocular deviation using a virtual reality (VR) device is developed. METHODS: A VR display system in which the screens that have the fixation target are changed alternately between on and off stages is used to simulate the norm

Eye Movement Abnormalities During the Gaze Perception Task in Individuals With Clinical High Risk for Psychosis: A Discriminant Analysis With Hidden Markov Models.

OBJECTIVES: Social cognitive impairments were well-documented in schizophrenia and individuals with clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). While eye movement abnormalities during gaze perception in schizophrenia have been suggested, such understanding in individuals with CHR is limited. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: This study recruited 36 CHR individuals and 50 healthy controls (HC) to perform a gaze perception task with eye-tracking techniques analyzed with hidden Markov models for predictability and pattern recognition. Eye movement variables and behavioral responses, self-referentia

Stationary Objects Flashed Periodically Appear to Move During Smooth Pursuit Eye Movement.

We discovered that a white disc flashed twice at the same location appears to move during smooth pursuit eye tracking in the direction opposite to that of the eye movement. We called this novel phenomenon movement-induced apparent motion (MIAM). Using the method of constant stimuli, we measured the required displacement of the second appearance of the disc in the pursuit direction to null the effect during the closed-loop stage of smooth pursuit eye tracking. We observed a strong linear relationship between the points of subjective stationarity and the inter-stimuli intervals for four smooth p

[The influence of eye movements on monochromatic wavefront aberrations].

BACKGROUND: Wavefront-guided corneal surgery is a standard therapeutic option for correcting refractive errors. If the wavefront measured preoperatively is influenced by an incorrect alignment of the bulb, the ablation profile could be distorted and the quality of vision reduced. METHOD: Wavefront analysis was done on 49 eyes, examining the primary gaze of the bulb as well as abduction, adduction, elevation, and depression. RESULTS: The study demonstrated a significant influence of eye movements on astigmatic aberrations. Horizontal eye movements have a stronger influence than vertical ones

Robust encoding of stimulus-response mapping by neurons in visual cortex.

Neural activity in sensory cortex is modulated by behavioral and cognitive factors, and this modulation is thought to contribute to the selection of specific sensory information needed to achieve behavioral goals. In contrast, more abstract behavioral variables that are independent of stimulus selection, such as stimulus-response mapping, are thought to be encoded by neurons outside of sensory cortex. We show that information about such mapping is robustly encoded in the responses of neurons in primate visual cortex. Monkeys were trained to alternate between two tasks that differed in the rule
