Multimodal Physiological Assessment of Attentional States and Driving Styles in Simulated Driving.

Mind wandering during driving is one of the major sources of road safety risk, but its expression across drivers of different styles remains unclear. Few studies have examined attentional state and driving style concurrently in a 1 h multimodal simulated driving protocol. We collected one hour of driving, five physiological signals, and eye tracking from 48 participants in a simulator. The driving style was obtained from a Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory pre-questionnaire, and attentional state was probed every 120 to 180 s during the experiment. We analyzed feature-level effects with

Incidental vocabulary learning through reading in multilingual primary school Children: The Roles of reading Comprehension, contextual Diversity, and contextual informativeness.

Incidental word learning through reading plays a central role in vocabulary development. Multilingual children, for whom English is an additional language, bring relevant language-learning experience to the task of learning new words through reading in English. However, it is not yet known how this learning is shaped by properties of the contexts in which words are encountered, or by reader characteristics such as reading comprehension. This study used eye tracking to examine whether two text-based properties, contextual diversity and informativeness, as well as reading comprehension skill, af

Using Eye Tracking to Examine Effects of Overt Localization on Referential Processing in German Sign Language Sentence Processing.

The processing of referential expressions is influenced by their form, but also by the accessibility of their antecedents. In sign languages, discourse referents are typically assigned to referential loci (R-loci) in the signing space, which can be used to identify discourse referents later on. This study on German Sign Language (DGS) examines whether overt manual localization of a discourse referent with an INDEX sign can be used to increase the prominence and, hence, accessibility of the corresponding discourse referent. Using an eye tracking paradigm, deaf adult DGS signers were presented w

Eye tracking as a novel approach to cognitive assessment in DOC patients based on evidence from a multicenter clinical trial.

The proper assessment of cognitive functioning is the subject of numerous scientific studies. Current behavioral methods essentially preclude this assessment in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). However, the development of eye-tracking technology (ETT) and the establishment of contact via this channel have created an opportunity to diagnose the cognitive function (CF) of DOC patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of CF of DOC patients for whom vision is the only channel of communication to introduce the CF assessment tool for DOC patients for whom vision rema

From focus to function: Longitudinal insights into infant attention and emerging executive functions via remote webcam eye tracking.

Growing evidence suggests that infant attention may predict subsequent cognitive outcomes. However, prior studies have predominantly tested small samples of infants in tightly controlled laboratory settings that differ from the complex, visually rich environments that infants experience in their day-to-day lives. The present study addresses this gap by measuring infant sustained attention in the home using novel remote webcam eye tracking methodology. A large, demographically diverse sample of 3- to 12-month-old infants (N = 160; 49% = female; 65% from low- to extremely low-income households;

Quantifying Induced Nystagmus Using a Smartphone Eye Tracking Application (EyePhone).

BACKGROUND: There are ≈5 million annual dizziness visits to US emergency departments, of which vestibular strokes account for over 250 000. The head impulse, nystagmus, and test of skew eye examination can accurately distinguish vestibular strokes from peripheral dizziness. However, the eye-movement signs are subtle, and lack of familiarity and difficulty with recognition of abnormal eye movements are significant barriers to widespread emergency department use. To break this barrier, we sought to assess the accuracy of EyePhone, our smartphone eye-tracking application, for quantifying nystagmu

Deep learning and eye tracking: Convolutional neural networks provide converging evidence for experience-driven attention within visual search.

Eye tracking during visual search generates spatiotemporally rich but complex data. Traditional analyses often utilize simplified metrics (saccade landings, dwell time, etc.) that necessarily exclude a substantial fraction of the variance in the raw eye data. Here, we asked if deep learning might aid scientists in objectively incorporating such discarded data into analyses. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are supervised machine learning tools that excel at classifying biological data. We built several CNNs that learn from raw eye-position time-course data to classify the location of relev

Fixation control and three-point field goal percentage in female collegiate basketball players: an eye-tracking study.

This study investigated the visual attention characteristics of female collegiate basketball players during three-point shooting and their relationship with field goal percentage. Sixty participants, categorized as expert, general, or novice players, performed three-point shots from left 45°, 90°, and right 45° positions while wearing Tobii Glasses 3 eye-tracking equipment. The number of fixations and fixation duration on the hoop, backboard, and net were recorded. Field goal percentage was assessed in a separate session (non-synchronized with eye-tracking). Data were analyzed using mixed-desi

Exploring how textual complexity affects cognitive load during reading: an eye-tracking study.

Reading constitutes a fundamental component of learning, and understanding cognitive load during reading is important both for explaining how learners engage with text and for enhancing the effectiveness of learning. The primary aim of this study is to examine how manipulated text complexity conditions influence eye-movement behavior, in order to better understand how readers' gaze patterns reflect increases or decreases in cognitive load. Specifically, the study investigates whether key metrics (fixations, regressions, pupil area) and the behavioral indicator of reading duration differ system

The Lexical Tone Partially Depends on Segments: Evidence from Visual-World Eye Tracking.

This study investigated the extent to which the role of lexical tone is contingent upon phonemic segments. Employing the printed-word paradigm, this study presented native Mandarin speakers with a visual display comprising a target word (e.g., "" /chai2huo3/, "firewood"), a same-tone competitor (e.g., "" /cha2dao4/, "tea ceremony"), a different-tone competitor (e.g., "" /cha1kong3/, "socket"), and two distractors. Simultaneously, participants listened to an auditory target word. Critically, the phonological competitors shared partial segmental information with the spoken target words. Particip

Characterizing Human Visual Performance in Dim Industrial Environments: An Eye-Tracking Sensor-Based Study on Mine Monitoring Interface Layouts.

In underground mining operations, intelligent electronic monitoring and control systems have gradually become essential tools for practitioners to obtain operational information. Because underground mines are characterized by low-light environments that differ substantially from above-ground natural lighting, screen-related factors can strongly affect visual search tasks. It is therefore important to examine how interface layout influences visual search efficiency under low-illuminance mining conditions. This study utilized eye-tracking sensing technology to evaluate user performance within a

Cross-linguistic influence in processing English relative clauses by Farsi and Dutch speakers.

In an eye-tracking sentence-reading experiment, we explored whether there is a cross-linguistic influence of L1 Farsi and L1 Dutch on the processing of L2 English subject and object relative clauses (SRCs & ORCs). Both Farsi and Dutch are verb-final in the relative clause, which means that SRCs and ORCs cannot be distinguished based on the surface structure of the clause (NP NP V in both cases). In contrast, English relative clauses follow an NP V NP-structure in SRCs, while ORCs follow an NP NP V-pattern, making the two structurally distinct. The difference between Dutch and Farsi is that Far

Eye-tracking and cognitive patterns in post-traumatic stress disorder: a scoping review.

Background: PTSD is associated with alterations in attentional processing and executive control, particularly in response to threat-related or emotionally salient cues. Early research emphasised sustained hypervigilance, whereas recent evidence indicates that attentional biases in PTSD are dynamic, context-dependent, and may also involve avoidance. Eye-tracking, especially combined with neurophysiological measures, provides fine-grained indices of visual attention and oculomotor control. Objective: This scoping review synthesises empirical findings on attentional bias and cognitive control in P

High-Accuracy Intermittent Strabismus Screening via Wearable Eye-Tracking and AI-Enhanced Ocular Feature Analysis.

An effective and highly accurate strabismus screening method is expected to identify potential patients and provide timely treatment to prevent further deterioration, such as amblyopia and even permanent vision loss. To satisfy this need, this work showcases a novel strabismus screening method based on a wearable eye-tracking device combined with an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. To identify the minor and occasional inconsistencies in strabismus patients during the binocular coordination process, which are usually seen in early-stage patients and rarely recognized in current studies,

Quantitative comparison of a mobile, tablet-based eye-tracker and two stationary, video-based eye-trackers.

The analysis of eye movements is a noninvasive, reliable and fast method to detect and quantify brain (dys)function. Here, we investigated the performance of two novel eye-trackers-the Thomas Oculus Motus-research mobile (TOM-rm) and the TOM-research stationary (TOM-rs)-and compared them with the performance of a well-established video-based eye-tracker, i.e., the EyeLink 1000 Plus (EL). The TOM-rm is a fully integrated, tablet-based mobile device that presents visual stimuli and records head-unrestrained eye movements at 30 Hz without additional infrared illumination. The TOM-rs is a stationa

Eye tracking based dyslexia detection using a holistic approach.

A new detection method for cognitive impairments is presented utilizing an eye tracking signals in a text reading test. This research enhances published articles that extract combination of various features. It does so by processing entire eye-tracking records either in time or frequency whereas applying only basic signal pre-processing. Such signals were classified as a whole by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) that hierarchically extract substantial features scatter either in time or frequency and nonlinearly binds them using machine learning to minimize a detection error.
