Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can transmit external injuries to the face, neck, and chest regions of infants. The aim of this study was to compare and contrast observations made during infant autopsies to delineate differences in the external appearance of those who did and those who did not receive resuscitation. We investigated 344 infant deaths between mid 2007 and 2013 in Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan, and identified 38 infants (11%) who displayed abrasions and/or contusions, independent of the cause of death. Of those, 27 infants (71%) were administered resuscitated whereas 11 infants (

The principles of management of mandibular fractures differ in children when compared to adults and depend on the specific age-related status of the growing mandible and the developing dentition. This paper presents a case report with a complex facial trauma affecting the mandibular body and condyle region and dentoalveolar complex. Clinical examination revealed soft tissue injuries, limited mouth opening, lateral deviation of the mandible, an avulsed incisor, a subluxated incisor, and a fractured crown. CBCT examination revealed a nondisplaced fracture and an oblique greenstick fracture of th

Facial fractures may be associated with concomitant lesions of other parts of body with some of these injuries being life-threatening. This retrospective study reports the types of associated injury and the factors influencing their occurrence, in patients with facial fractures. In 18.2% of 604 patients, one associated injury at least was recorded. The most common associated injury was cranial trauma (9.9%), followed by limbs fractures (9.1%), chest trauma (2%), spine injury (0.5%) and eye ball rupture (0.5%). A poly trauma was recorded in 3.2% of the patients who had sustained a cerebral trau

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of domestic violence (DV) is difficult because of a lack of clearly defined signs and symptoms. The goal of this study was to confirm and refine the role of head, neck, and face (HNF) injuries as markers of DV.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study design and a sample of female trauma patients treated in an inner-city hospital emergency room (Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, GA) were used. The predictor study variable was injury location (HNF or other location). The outcome variable was traumatic origin (DV or other cause). A victim of DV was defined as a patie

From 1968 to 1990, 135 children up to the age of 14 years were treated as in-patients for fractures of the facial skull. Most had been sustained in traffic accident. Other associated lesions were seen in 80 patients. In 21 of these we observed general surgical traumas or fractures of the base of the skull, and in 23 patients cerebral traumas were detected. Treatment was instituted an average of 1.7 days after the trauma in the case of patients with no associated injuries and of 5.6 days in the case of those with other injuries. Definitive treatment had been applied within 6 days after the acci

Details of injuries to the face and teeth have been collected over a five-year period. One hundred and thirty patients were seen with injuries resulting from 21 different sports. Estimates of the numbers of people playing various team sports in the Bradford area suggest that the incidence of facial injuries is most common in rugby, followed by soccer and cricket. Miniature motor cycling and horse-riding are the most dangerous individual sports. The ages of injured patients varied widely in different sports, but the severity of injuries sustained is less than those due to other causes.

From 1973 to 1980, 727 patients with facial fractures received formal ophthalmologic consultation. The series included 174 mandible fractures, 29 nasal fractures, 436 midfacial fractures, and 88 frontal fractures. Of these, a total of 67% sustained some degree of ocular injuries. Seventy-nine percent of the eye injuries were categorized as temporary, 18% were serious, and 3% were blinding. Of the mandibular fractures, 29% had ocular injuries, 59% nasal fractures, 59% midfacial fractures, and 89% frontal fractures.

We examined the morphological changes of Golgi apparatus (GA) of the facial motor neurons in rats after facial nerve avulsion or axotomy. In rats after avulsion, the numbers of motor neurons showed reduction and fragmentation of GA, namely the organelle lost the normal network-like configuration which was replaced by numerous small disconnected elements (fine fragmentation). This GA fragmentation was morphologically indistinguishable from that previously reported in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). On the other hand, axotomy did not induce significant motor neuron loss, and the GA had lost

Three infants were attacked by pet ferrets and sustained severe facial injuries. Two of the children had their ears bitten off and required reconstructive surgery. The attacks were unprovoked. Two of the children were asleep in their cribs when they were bitten. Although ferrets are increasingly popular pets, we believe that they are not suitable pets for families with small children. Physicians should be aware that ferrets may unpredictably injure infants and that no effective rabies vaccine for ferrets is yet available.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on ultrastructure of facial nerve and Schwann cells in facial nerve injury rabbits so as to explore its mechanism underlying improving facial palsy.
METHODS: A total of 60 Japanese white rabbits were randomly assigned to normal control (normal, n = 6), sham-operation (sham, n = 18), model (n = 18) and EA (n = 18) groups. The facial nerve injury model was established by clamping the right facial nerve for 5 min by using a pair of forceps. EA (1.5 V, 3 Hz/60 Hz) was applied to "Yifeng" (TE 17)-"Hegu" (LI 4), and "Dicang" (ST4)-"Jiache"

Idiopathic facial paralysis is the most common type of facial nerve injury, accounting for approximately 70% of peripheral facial paralysis cases. This disease can not only lead to a change in facial expression but also greatly impact the psychology of patients. In severe cases, it can affect the normal work and life of patients. Therefore, the research on facial nerve injury repair has important clinical significance. In order to study the mechanism of this disease, it is necessary to carry out relevant animal experiments, among which the most important task is to establish an animal model wi

Recent studies using molecular and genetic techniques just have started to elucidate the complex process that drives successful peripheral nerve regeneration. Introducing proteomics to this field, we unilaterally performed a facial nerve axotomy in 13 adult Wistar rats. Seven days later, a total of 40 20-microm coronary cryostat sections of the operated and contralateral unoperated nucleus facialis were microdissected. On the one hand, microdissected areas were pooled for each side, lysed and applied to ProteinChip Arrays. On the other hand, one microdissected area from the right and left faci

BACKGROUND: Apoptosis has been implicated in neuronal degeneration after optic and sciatic nerve injury. The mechanisms contributing to facial motoneuron death are poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying facial motoneuronal death and the expression of BCL-2 in facial motoneurons after facial nerve injury.
METHODS: Morphologic changes in the facial motoneurons were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy, and TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) methods was used. Expression of BCL-2 was studied by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybrid

Injury to the facial nerve is a significant risk during resection of cerebellopontine angle tumors. To minimize the risk of facial nerve injury, intraoperative electromyographic monitoring of facial musculature is frequently used. However, the reliability of such monitoring systems for detection of thermal nerve injury resulting from the use of carbon dioxide lasers has not been systematically evaluated. We determined the sensitivity of a computerized electromyographic monitor for detection of laser facial nerve injury in an anesthetized rat model. The mandibular and buccal branches of the fac

The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) and Saving Faces undertook two national prospective surveys 11 years apart. They recorded the facial injuries treated in UK emergency departments and collected data on 14872 patients. In this paper, which aims to act as a feasibility study for a third national survey of facial injuries, we have reviewed hard-tissue injuries and specifically focused on temporal changes in their morphology. The two sets of directly comparable, categorical, unpaired, cross-sectional data were evaluated independently for statistical significance. I

In spite of anatomic proximity of the facial skeleton and cranium, there is lack of information in the literature regarding the relationship between facial and brain injuries. This study aims to correlate brain injuries with facial injuries using finite element method (FEM). Nine common impact scenarios of facial injuries are simulated with their individual stress wave propagation paths in the facial skeleton and the intracranial brain. Fractures of cranio-facial bones and intracranial injuries are evaluated based on the tolerance limits of the biomechanical parameters. General trend of maximu

A "slock" is a padlock in a sock used as a weapon in correctional facilities to induce trauma. This assessment examined the prevalence, pattern, and degree of slock- and padlock-induced facial fractures. This quality assessment initiative was performed through retrospective analysis of 435 incarcerated patients treated surgically for facial fractures at an academic medical center from 2011 to 2019. Fifty-seven patients (16%) described injury from a padlock, of whom 23 (6%) specified a slock. The prevalence of padlock-induced facial fractures doubled from 2012 to 2017. Padlock-induced facial fr

Facial paralysis can be a devastating consequence resulting from blunt and penetrating trauma to the head and neck, as well as surgical injury, either accidental or due to involvement by tumor. In addition, the etiology can be attributed to a variety of other causes, ranging from infectious to metabolic, and is frequently idiopathic in nature. The incidence of facial nerve injury during temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgeries varies among surgeons. There are many factors that could contribute to the injury of the temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve. These nerves lie in a conflu
