[Adrenal hemorrhage in a newborn with factor V Leiden--a clinical case].

Neonatal adrenal hemorrhage is frequently associated with birth trauma, perinatal asphyxia, septicemia, coagulation defects and thromboembolism. We report a case of bilateral adrenal hemorrhage in newborn baby with perinatal asphyxia. Ultrasound findings of subacute adrenal hemorrhage draw attention to its presumable antenatal genesis. DNA analysis for thrombophilic mutations identifies factor V Leiden.

Factor V Leiden mutation and other thrombophilia markers in childhood ischemic stroke.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between ischemic childhood stroke and thrombophilia. The prevalence of thrombophilia risk factors in 30 unrelated children with ischemic stroke were compared with 33 age-matched control subjects. Patients and control group were tested for the presence of activated protein C (APC) resistance, antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA), increased factor VIII levels, and for the deficiency of protein C (PC), protein S (PS), and antithrombin. When APCR was detected in patients or in controls, factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation was also tested. Seventeen of

Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with visceral leishmaniasis and factor V Leiden mutation.

We here report a case of subacute Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) related to Factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation in the presence of visceral leishmaniasis. A 17-year-old man was admitted to hospital because of abdominal pain, pretibial edema and fever. The clinical picture of BCS had been developed within several months. BCS was diagnosed by radiographic examination. On DNA analysis, a heterozygote Arg506Gln mutation in the factor V gene was found. Histological examination of the bone marrow showed intracellular leishmania amastigotes. Despite appropriate treatment patient's clinical condition deteriora

The factor V gene A4070G mutation and the risk of venous thrombosis.

The A4070G polymorphism in exon 13 of the factor V (FV) gene, which replaces His by Arg at position 1299 of the B domain, was recently shown to influence circulating FV levels and to contribute to the activated protein C (APC) resistance phenotype. We examined the impact of this polymorphism in a population of unselected patients with venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). The prevalence of the G4070 (R2) allele was determined in 205 patients and 394 healthy subjects of similar age and sex distribution. Thirty-seven patients (18%) were heterozygous for the R2 allele and 1 (0.5%) was homozygous.

The factor V Leiden mutation in Japanese couples with recurrent spontaneous abortion.

Thrombosis of placental vessels can be a major cause of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). The factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation, a single point mutation in the factor V gene, is the most common genetic predisposition to thrombosis in European countries and the United States. However, even among Caucasian populations, the association between the FVL mutation and RSA is still controversial. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of the FVL mutation in Japanese women who have experienced RSA and to clarify the contribution of the FVL mutation to recurrent miscarri

Factor V Leiden mutation is associated with ocular involvement in Behçet disease.

PURPOSE: Behçet disease is a systemic disease of young adults characterized by venous occlusion in both the deep venous and retinal circulations. In severe ocular disease, blindness may occur despite immunosuppressive treatment. The most common inherited risk factor for the development of idiopathic venous thrombosis is the presence of the Factor V (FV Leiden) mutation, which confers resistance to activated protein C. The association of FV Leiden with Behçet disease has been reported, but its influence on ocular disease is not known. We therefore investigated the prevalence of this mutation in

Evaluation of role of factor V Leiden mutation in fatal pulmonary thromboembolism.

Association of a mutation in the coagulation factor V gene (FV Leiden) with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism has been well documented in the literature, but no study has specifically screened cases of fatal pulmonary thromboembolism for the mutation. This study sought to determine whether FV Leiden plays a role in the pathogenesis of fatal pulmonary thromboembolism. We isolated DNA from archived paraffin-embedded tissues derived from 46 necropsy cases in which pulmonary thromboembolism was listed as the cause of death (n = 27) or was secondarily associated with death (n = 19)

Acquired factor V inhibitor in the setting of coronavirus disease 2019 infection.

Factor V inhibitors are a rare cause of life-threatening bleeding. We present a case of an acquired factor V inhibitor likely caused by coronavirus disease 2019 infection. Bleeding was manifested by severe anemia requiring frequent red-cell transfusion, left psoas muscle hematoma, and left retroperitoneal cavity hematoma. Factor V activity was less than 1% and the factor V inhibitor titer was 31.6 Bethesda units. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA testing of the nasopharynx was positive 2 weeks before presentation and continued to be positive for 30 days. The patient failed tr

Factor V Leiden G1691A and Prothrombin Gene G20210A Mutations on Pregnancy Outcome.

Factor V Leiden (FVL) G1619A mutation and prothrombin gene (PTG) G20210A are the most common inherited thrombophilias. They have been associated with various obstetric complications such as venous thromboembolism, recurrent pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, abruptio placentae, and small for gestational age fetus. The prevalence of these two mutations is 3-15% in Caucasians and is assumed to be far less common in other ethnic populations. However, there have been several controversies regarding advising routine screening of these thrombophilias because of a widely variable strength of association b

Coronary artery disease associated with factor V Leiden mutation: a case report.

The prevalence of coronary artery disease in young adults (<45 years of age) has been increasing steadily in recent decades. Although traditional cardiovascular risk factors can be identified in most cases, newly recognized associations are becoming progressively more relevant. The relationship between the factor V Leiden mutation and atherosclerosis has been a matter of debate due to conflicting data presented in previous studies. Presently described is the case of a previously asymptomatic 37-year-old woman with a significant family history of coronary artery disease who developed rapidly

Thromboembolic events in Fabry disease and the impact of factor V Leiden.

OBJECTIVES: Although several reports suggest an increased thromboembolic event rate, especially regarding strokes and TIAs at early age in patients with Fabry disease (FD), the risk for patients with FD to experience these events, the clinical relevance of additional risk factors including the concurrence of factor V Leiden (FVL), and the benefit of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) regarding these events remain unclear. METHODS: Three hundred four consecutively recruited patients with FD were evaluated for their lifetime occurrence of thromboembolic events such as stroke, TIA, deep vein throm

[Development of asymptomatic acquired factor V inhibitor after the administration of antibiotics].

Acquired factor V (FV) inhibitor is a rare coagulation disorder, the causes and clinical symptoms of which are known to vary widely. Acquired FV inhibitor mostly occurs with exposure to fibrin glues during surgical procedures. We experienced a case with asymptomatic acquired FV inhibitor caused by antibiotic therapy for aspiration pneumonia.A man in his eighties had been treated for chronic atrial fibrillation, cerebral infarction and spinal canal stenosis. He was admitted after antibiotic therapy for aspiration pneumonia in a previous hospital. On admission, the screening test for blood coagu

Acquired inhibitor of factor V: first report in China and literature review.

We reported a 51-year-old man who developed a severe haematuria with a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Laboratory evaluation revealed the presence of specific factor V inhibitors. No underlying diseases and associated conditions have been identified. The patient improved after immunosuppressive therapy. However, the FV level remained low, indicating incomplete inhibitor eradication. The clinical course of our patient was consistent with the observations by others that FV inhibitor can be persistent for months or years.

[Factor V Leiden mutation. Successful outcome of a pregnancy after heparin therapy].

Several reports have highlighted the significant correlation between maternal thromboembolism pathologies, such as factor V Leiden mutation, and the occurrence of gestational pathologies. The main causes of thromboembolism pathologies are the inherited coagulopathies. The most common genetic predispositions include autosomal dominant inheritance coagulative factors deficiencies, such as antithrombin III (AT III), C protein (CP), S protein (SP), G20210A mutation, hyperomocystinemia and the activated C protein resistance, caused by factor V Leiden mutation. Maternal thromboembolism as an inherit
