Family history and schizophrenia: characteristics of groups with and without positive family histories.

Social and demographic characteristics were examined retrospectively in a sample of 475 hospitalized schizophrenics to test the hypothesis that they can be meaningfully distinguished by the presence or absence of psychiatric disorders in their relatives. Cases with a positive family history of psychiatric disorders (FHP cases) were significantly more likely to have been born in the United Kingdom and to have had older mothers. Those who had relatives with psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia were significantly more likely to have been diagnosed as schizo-affective. The findings are t

Family-Centered Care and Outcomes of Child Flourishing and Family Resilience and Connection.

IMPORTANCE: Family-centered care is an approach to pediatric health care that recognizes the essential role of the family in ensuring child health and well-being, seeks to establish collaborative partnerships among the child, family, and health care team, and provides a framework for implementing trauma-informed care. However, the association between receiving family-centered care and key measures of child and family well-being, including among families with a history of trauma and adversity, is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between family-centered care and child flourishing an

Relationship between family environmental factors and infant sleep: Family factors and infant sleep.

This study examines the relationship between infant sleep and parenting style, family climate, parenting stress, and soothing methods among Finnish families. Mothers completed questionnaires before birth and when their infants were 3 and 8 months old. Initially, 1667 mothers participated, with follow-up responses from 1421 mothers and 1427 infants at 3 months and 1298 mothers and 1302 infants at 8 months. A cross-sectional data analysis was conducted using linear regression to examine the four sleep-related outcome variables, and parallel multivariable regression models were built using backwa

Effects of Family Interventions on Social Capital: The Role of Nuclear Family Orientation.

Evidence stresses that family interventions mostly involve members of the nuclear family unit and therefore exclude other potentially significant individuals. This study hypothesizes that such a nuclear family orientation has unintended consequences for the development of family-based social capital in family interventions. This study was based on a sample of 48 parents enrolled in a family intervention program in Switzerland. Data were collected and analyzed at two time points using egocentric network analysis. The results showed that practitioners mainly involved parents and their children i

Namaste Care Family for people with dementia and family-A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Few evidence-based psychosocial interventions target people with advanced dementia. METHODS: Namaste Care Family is a daily multi-dimensional care program to improve quality of life (QoL) of people with dementia and their family caregivers. In this cluster-randomized controlled trial, adjusted linear mixed models were used to analyze effects at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up. Ten nursing homes implemented the program (n = 116) while nine nursing homes provided care as usual (n = 115). RESULTS: The intervention group showed less discomfort (-1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI]

Family relationships and caregiver burden among family caregivers of patients with terminal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Family relationships play a crucial role in the care and support of patients with terminal cancer, impacting their physical and emotional well-being. This study investigates whether family relationships are associated with caregiver responses in end-of-life (EOL) care for patients with terminal cancer. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 172 family caregivers of patients with terminal cancer, collected from nine hospice and palliative care centers in South Korea between June 2021 and May 2023. Standardized tools, including the Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA)

Family history and risk of breast cancer: an analysis accounting for family structure.

PURPOSE: Family history is an important risk factor for breast cancer incidence, but the parameters conventionally used to categorize it are based solely on numbers and/or ages of breast cancer cases in the family and take no account of the size and age-structure of the woman's family. METHODS: Using data from the Generations Study, a cohort of over 113,000 women from the general UK population, we analyzed breast cancer risk in relation to first-degree family history using a family history score (FHS) that takes account of the expected number of family cases based on the family's age-structur

Which family--what therapy: Maori culture, families and family therapy in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a relatively young and small country which has seen steady migration for nearly seven centuries. Despite a long history of rivalry and hostility between Maori and European values, the country has also seen some significant synergism between the two cultures. For the last three decades Asians have also migrated at a significant pace. The country faces the challenge of delivering quality mental health services to such cultures which are bifurcated in being socio-centric (Maori, Pacific Islanders and Asian total 32% combined) or ego-centric (European total 68%). Significant progres

Developing Family Healthware, a family history screening tool to prevent common chronic diseases.

Family health history reflects the effects of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors and is an important risk factor for a variety of disorders including coronary heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed Family Healthware, a new interactive, Web-based tool that assesses familial risk for 6 diseases (coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancer) and provides a "prevention plan" with personalized recommendations for lifestyle changes and screening. The tool collects data on health behavi

Family economic pressure and adolescent suicidal ideation: application of the family stress model.

This study used a sample of 501 families from the Mississippi Delta region to examine the feasibility of the Family Stress Model for understanding adolescent suicidal ideation. The results indicated that family economic pressure was related to parental depressive symptoms, which, in turn, was related to parental hostile behavior and physical abuse. These parental behaviors were related to adolescent self-esteem and depressive symptoms, which, in turn, were related to adolescent suicidal ideation. Therefore, family economic pressure and parental depressive symptoms and behaviors were indirectly

Validity of family history data on PD: evidence for a family information bias.

OBJECTIVE: To study the validity of information provided by case and control subjects (or their proxies) about PD among their first-degree relatives. METHODS: Secondary cases of PD were assessed both through a single informant (family history method) and through the study of each relative (family study method). The family study method was considered as the standard for comparison, and the sensitivity and specificity of the family history method were studied. RESULTS: A total of 133 population-based case subjects and their 655 relatives were recruited, and 119 population-based control subject

Comparing women's views on family and sexual problems in family and gynecological practices.

This study compares the role of community gynecologists and family physicians, seen from the patients' perspective. A sample of 126 female patients in family practices and 212 patients in gynecological practices were surveyed about their preferences and expectations of whether their doctor should address personal, family and sexual problems. The effects of covariates (such as the type of doctor, patient age, family status, child desire) on patient expectations were simultaneously assessed by multiple logistic regression. Between 40% and 70% of the patients contacted confirmed the family-orient

Familial renal glycosuria identified in an Indian family.

Glycosuria can be isolated or it can be associated with other tubulopathies like proximal renal tubular acidosis, Fanconi syndrome and endocrine conditions like diabetes mellitus. The SLC5A2 gene codes for the SGLT2 transporter, which is responsible for glucose reabsorption in the proximal tubule. Previously reported cases show that mutation in this gene is associated with intellectual disability, seizure disorder and renin and angiotensin system dysfunction. In his early childhood, a male child displayed persistently high urine glucose levels. We ruled out diabetes mellitus and other tubulopa

Familial prune belly syndrome in a Nigerian family.

A case of Prune Belly Syndrome in an infant, the second in a middle class family with both parents in their late thirties, is presented because of its rarity. Constraints in the management are discussed and relevant literature reviewed. This is intended to awaken interest and sharpen indices of suspicion that would facilitate early diagnosis, enhance management, and mitigate prejudices.

Familial risk and familial survival in prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The Swedish Family-Cancer Database has been the major source of population-based prospective data on familial risks on most cancers, including prostate cancer. In the present review, I focus on three lines of family studies with novel results. METHODS: The covered studies originate from the same database with publication dates spanning a period of somewhat over 3 years. Age-specific hazard ratios (HRs) of incident prostate cancer and fatal prostate cancer were determined according to the number of affected relatives. Cumulative risks for incidence and death were calculated for the

Familial multiple lipomatosis: report of a new family.

Familial multiple lipomatosis (FML) is a rare entity. We report a family with this disease. Karyotypic analysis was performed on tissue isolated from excised lipomas and peripheral blood. No chromosomal abnormalities were found. This is the first report of karyotypic analysis of lipomas removed from a patient with FML. The finding of a normal karyotype is important because approximately 25% of spontaneous lipomas will have abnormal karyotypes; therefore, we felt there was a significant probability that familial lipomas in FML would have abnormal karyotypes.
