Topical therapies for glaucoma: what family physicians need to know.

Medication classes historically used in the management of glaucoma include beta blockers, miotics, sympathomimetics and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Because topically applied medications are more site specific, they are preferred in the treatment of glaucoma. Compared with oral medications, topical agents are associated with a decreased incidence of systemic side effects. With topical administration, conjunctival and localized skin allergic reactions are relatively common, whereas severe reactions, including death, are rare. Recently introduced topical agents for glaucoma therapy include dor

Individual cognitive behavioral therapy and combined family/individual therapy for young adults with Anorexia nervosa: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of outpatient individual cognitive behavioral therapy for young adults (CBT-YA) and combined family/individual therapy for young adults (FT-YA) for anorexia nervosa (AN). Method: Participants (aged 17-24 years) with AN in Sweden were recruited and assigned to 18 months of CBT-YA or FT-YA. Treatment efficacy was assessed primarily using BMI, presence of diagnosis, and degree of eating-related psychopathology at post-treatment and follow-up. Secondary outcomes included depression and general psychological psychopathology. The trial was registere

Family Conflict, Perceived Criticism, and Aggression in Symptomatic Offspring of Parents With Mood Disorders: Results From a Clinical Trial of Family-Focused Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: In offspring of parents with bipolar or major depressive disorder, we examined the longitudinal association between parents' and youths' ratings of family conflict and criticism and youths' levels of impulsive aggression during a 6-month randomized trial of family intervention. METHOD: Following a diagnostic evaluation, we offered adolescents (aged 13-19 years) and parents with mood disorders a 12-session, 18-week protocol of family-focused therapy, with random assignment to mobile applications that enabled mood tracking or encouraged practice of mood management and family communic

Effectiveness of a high-intensive trauma-focused, family-based therapy for youth exposed to family violence: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a common problem with direct adverse effects on children as well as indirect effects through disruption of parenting and parent-child relationships. The complex interrelationships between family violence, parenting, and relationships make recovery from psychological responses difficult. In more than half of the families referred to mental health care after family violence, the violence continues. Also, the effect sizes of "golden standard" treatments are generally lower for complex trauma compared to other forms of trauma. In the treatment of complex trauma, trau

GPNMB-directed CAR T cell therapy against MiT/TFE-family fusion-driven solid tumors.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy for solid tumors is constrained by the scarcity of safe, uniformly expressed cell-surface targets. Here we identify glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB)-an MiT/TFE-family fusion-driven protein-as being highly, homogeneously and stably expressed in primary and relapsed alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) and translocation renal cell carcinoma. We develop a GPNMB-directed CAR T cell product, GCAR1, which demonstrates potent activity against patient-matched cells, organoids and xenograft models. Post hoc interim analysis of a first-in-human open-label, individual-

Multi-Family Therapy in East and Southeast Asia-A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis.

This systematic review examined the characteristics, cultural adaptations, and effectiveness of multi-family therapy in studies conducted in the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Eighteen reports from 17 studies were included, covering quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods designs. Quantitative findings showed that multi-family therapy was more consistently associated with improvements in individual-level outcomes (e.g., symptom severity, psychological distress, functioning), whereas effects on family-system outcomes were more mixed. Thematic synthesis of qualitative and mixed…

Effect of electroconvulsive therapy on depression among adolescents and its relationship with family function.

To explore the short-term and long-term effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on depression among adolescents and to determine the relationship between the effects of ECT and family functioning. Sixty-five adolescent inpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who received ECT were recruited. We assessed the severity of MDD with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-24 (HDRS-24) before (T0), 1-2 days after the end of ECT treatment (T1), and 3 months after the end of ECT treatment (T2). We calculated the reduction in HDRS scores at T1 (short-term effect) and T2 (long-term effect). Addit

Augmenting ERP With Attachment-Based Family Therapy: A Case Report in Residential OCD Treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating, often chronic condition with symptoms that are time-consuming and can cause distress or impairment. OCD can involve and have a significant impact on families. Although calls for family-inclusive treatment for OCD exist, results on its effectiveness are mixed. This case report presents Jane, a young adult with OCD in psychiatric residential treatment, and how her symptoms were profoundly affected and maintained in part by maladaptive family processes. Attachment-based family therapy is used in conjunction with exposure and response preventi…

Caregiver maltreatment history and treatment response following an intensive Emotion Focused Family Therapy workshop.

This single-arm, repeated measures study investigated the impact caregiver trauma history may have on treatment response following an intensive, 2-day Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) caregiver workshop. Caregivers (n = 243) completed questionnaires regarding their child's emotion regulation and clinical symptoms, as well as their own childhood trauma history (i.e., exposure to various forms of child maltreatment), caregiver self-efficacy and caregiver blocks (e.g., fears) to support their child's treatment and recovery. Questionnaires were administered prior to and immediately following …

Variable Expressivity and Response to Bisphosphonate Therapy in a Family with Osteoporosis Pseudoglioma Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis pseudoglioma syndrome (OPPGS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterised by congenital blindness and osteoporosis, caused by biallelic mutations in the LRP5 gene. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A consanguineous family with four OPPGS-affected members with variable expressivity. OBSERVATION: A novel homozygous missense pathogenic variant (c.3709C>T) was identified in the LRP5 gene. Good response to biphosphonate therapy was observed in all affected members. MESSAGE: This case highlights the importance of screening for osteopenia in a case of familial exudati

Adolescent and Family-focused Cognitive-behavioural Therapy for Paediatric Bipolar Disorders: A Case Series.

UNLABELLED: Although pharmacological treatments can help alleviate mood symptoms in youth with paediatric bipolar disorder (PBD), residual symptoms still commonly persist. In many cases, these symptoms seriously affect the social and psychological development of children and adolescents suffering from PBD. Complementary interventions, such as psychosocial and psychoeducational treatments, can help children and their families manage mood regulation and other challenges throughout childhood and adolescence. However, most research on such interventions has focused on children, single-family psych

Treatment moderators of child- and family-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy for pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Prior work has demonstrated the efficacy of child- and family-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (CFF-CBT) versus enhanced treatment as usual (TAU; unstructured psychotherapy) for pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD). The current study builds on primary findings by examining baseline child, parent, and family characteristics as moderators of symptom response trajectories. METHOD: A total of 69 youth aged 7 to 13 years (mean = 9.19 years, SD = 1.61 years) with DSM-IV-TR bipolar I, II, or not otherwise specified (NOS) were randomly assigned, with family members, to CFF-CBT or TAU. Affiliative behaviour and conflictual communication during brief family therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) present positive responses to family therapy, the key features of therapeutic changes still require identification. This study explores the role of conflictual communication and affiliative nonverbal behaviour in therapeutic change in brief strategic family therapy (BSFT) for AN patients. METHODS: Ten female AN patients and their parents were included in the sample and took part in a 6-month follow-up of BSFT. The durations of conflictual communication and of affiliative nonverbal behaviour estimated by eye contact were compared between …

Integrated family and individual therapy for bipolar disorder: results of a treatment development study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have established the efficacy of psychosocial interventions as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy in the symptom maintenance of bipolar disorder. This study concerned a new psychosocial approach - integrated family and individual therapy (IFIT) - that synthesizes family psychoeducational sessions with individual sessions of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy. METHOD: Shortly after an acute illness episode, 30 bipolar patients (DSM-IV criteria) were assigned to open treatment with IFIT (up to 50 weekly sessions of family and individual therapy) and mood-stabilizing me

Family-Centered Occupational Therapy Consultation for Children Under 18 Years Old: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Family-centered occupational therapy provided in children's natural environments can enhance learning, development, participation, and caregiver competence. Consultation is a key approach within this model. This scoping review examined the literature on family-centered occupational therapy consultation for individuals under 18 years old and its reported effects on families and goal achievement. METHOD: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, five databases and gray literature were searched (2000-April 2025). Studies were included if they described synchronous consultation between famil
