Estimating the costs of interrelated reproductive disorders in dairy farms.

Several reproductive disorders can occur in dairy cows from peripartum until the start of pregnancy. Their occurrence can be interrelated, which complicates the estimation of subsequent economic impact. Estimation of the economic impact of reproductive disorders is essential for dairy farmers to make informed decisions. It enables them to prioritize the prevention of disorders with the highest economic impact. The aim of this study was to estimate the costs of dairy cow reproductive disorders, including dystocia, retained placenta, acute metritis, clinical endometritis, anovulation, cystic ova

Trialling the SmartWorm® application in New Zealand sheep farms.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remain a major health and productivity challenge for grazing livestock globally, including New Zealand where widespread anthelmintic resistance has been reported. This was a pilot study evaluating the effectiveness of SmartWorm®, an app-based decision-support tool for Targeted Selective Treatment (TST) of internal parasites to reduce drench use without compromising lamb growth under New Zealand conditions. A total of 1738 ewe lambs across three commercial farms were allocated to either a TST or Blanket Treatment (BT) group (treated every 28 days) and monitored

Fifty years of environmental progress for United States dairy farms.

Dairy farms in the United States have changed in many ways over the past 50 yr. Milk production efficiency has increased greatly, with ∼30% fewer cows producing about twice the amount of milk today. Other improvements include increases in crop yields, fuel efficiency of farm equipment, and efficiency in producing most resources used on farms (e.g. electricity, fuel, fertilizer). These improvements have led to changes in the environmental impact of farms. Through simulation of representative dairy farms in 1971 and 2020, changes in nutrient losses and farmgate life cycle assessments of greenhou

Dynamics of antibiotic resistance in poultry farms via multivector analysis.

This study examines the distribution of microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across various vectors in poultry farm environments. The results show that airborne particulate matter (PM) and soil harbor the highest counts of microbial genes, exceeding those found in poultry visceral samples, which display lower microbial diversity and ARG levels. This highlights environmental vectors, particularly soil and PM, as major reservoirs for ARGs. Proteobacteria, predominantly present in feces and feed, are identified as key carriers of ARGs, with resistance mechanisms primarily

Flumequine-loaded titanate nanotubes as antibacterial agents for aquaculture farms.

Flumequine (FLUM), a quinolone-derived antibiotic is one of the most prescribed drugs in aquaculture farms. However, its intensive use becomes worrisome because of its environmental risks and the emergence of FLUM-resistant bacteria. To overcome these problems we propose in this study the encapsulation and the delivery of FLUM by titanate nanotubes (TiNTs). Optimal FLUM loading was reached by suspending the dehydrated powder nanomaterials (FLUM : TiNTs ratio = 1 : 5) in ethanol. The drug entrapment efficiency was calculated to be 80% approximately with a sustained release in PBS at 37 °C up to

Campylobacter spp. prevalence and fluoroquinolone resistance in chicken layer farms.

Chicken is a major source of human campylobacteriosis. Chicken meat originates not only from broilers but also from spent layers; however, few reports have documented the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter spp. in layers in Japan. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. in 47 layer farms in Japan. Fecal samples were collected from the youngest and oldest flocks on the farm, and Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 46/47 (97.9%) farms. Among the C. jejuni isolates, the resistance rates to ampicillin, tetracycline, an

Respiratory Health among Pesticide Sprayers at Flower Farms in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Pesticide use in Ethiopia has become a common practice in which large-scale flower farms are the main consumers. Workers on flower farms might be exposed to pesticides while spraying or while performing other tasks related to pesticide use and management. It is unclear whether working as a flower farm sprayer is associated with respiratory health problems. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare respiratory symptoms and lung function indices between pesticide sprayers and non-spraying workers. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 flower farms, involvi

Seroprevalences of Newly Discovered Porcine Pestiviruses in German Pig Farms.

Several novel porcine pestiviruses that are linked to disease outbreaks in commercial pig farms were discovered during recent years. Bungowannah pestivirus (BuPV; new species Pestivirus F) causes sudden death in young pigs, but has only ever been isolated in the Australian region Bungowannah. Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV; new species Pestivirus K) on the other hand has been found in multiple countries worldwide and is potentially linked to congenital tremor, a disease that causes considerable production problems in pig farms. To assess the seroprevalences of both viruses in German commerc

[Use of antibiotics in Swiss piglet production and fattening farms].

In 164 randomly selected Swiss piglet production farms and 101 fattening farms, the indication for antibiotic use in 2012/2013 was recorded and an animal treatment index (TBI) was calculated for each age group. Sows were treated on average 0.9 days per year mainly due to mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA). Suckling piglets were treated on average 0.5 days per production cycle, mainly due to diarrhea and polyarthritis. Weaned piglets were treated during 4.4 days, especially due to diarrhea, polyarthritis and wasting. In fattening pigs, treatments were mainly due to diarrhea and HPS-suspicion, an

Trends of ATV use and associated injury on Saskatchewan farms.

PURPOSE: All-terrain vehicles (ATV's) are a hazardous source of injury in many contexts and geographical regions, but to date have not been investigated in Saskatchewan. METHODS: Baseline surveys from the Saskatchewan Farm Injury Project were examined at two time points in terms of: (1) rates and correlated characteristics of reported ATV use; and (2) qualitative content analysis of injury events involving ATVs. The sample of eligible farmers was 2,972 in 2007 and 1,702 in 2013. FINDINGS: Self-reported ATV use increased on Saskatchewan farms over the five-year period, both in terms of the nu

Vaccine breaks: Outbreaks of myxomatosis on Spanish commercial rabbit farms.

Despite the success of vaccination against myxoma virus, myxomatosis remains a problem on rabbit farms throughout Spain and Europe. In this study we set out to evaluate possible causes of myxoma virus (MYXV) vaccine failures addressing key issues with regard to pathogen, vaccine and vaccination strategies. This was done by genetically characterising MYXV field isolates from farm outbreaks, selecting a representative strain for which to assay its virulence and measuring the protective capability of a commercial vaccine against this strain. Finally, we compare methods (route) of vaccine administ

Arcobacter population dynamics in pigs on farrow-to-finish farms.

Healthy pigs are an important reservoir for the emerging human pathogen Arcobacter which can result in contamination of porcine carcasses and pork and the spread of arcobacters into the environment. Up to now, the excretion of arcobacters by pigs has been studied, but information about the transmission routes in fattening pigs is lacking. The present study aimed to elucidate the Arcobacter population dynamics in pigs during the fattening period on four farrow-to-finish farms. On each farm, 30 clinically healthy, 12-week-old piglets were selected. Fecal samples were collected on 10 sampling occ

Molecular diversity of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from Irish dairy farms.

Many foods originate on the farm where cross-contamination with pathogens can occur, with implications for human health. This study characterized a bank of 51 Listeria monocytogenes isolates originating from 12 farms located in Ireland by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to establish the molecular diversity of the isolate collection, and examine transmission patterns of L. monocytogenes across the farm environment, and also determined resistances against five different antibiotics (ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, penicillin G, and tetracycline). Development of occupational exposure limits for the Hanford tank farms.

Production of plutonium for the United States' nuclear weapons program from the 1940s to the 1980s generated 53 million gallons of radioactive chemical waste, which is stored in 177 underground tanks at the Hanford site in southeastern Washington State. Recent attempts to begin the retrieval and treatment of these wastes require moving the waste to more modern tanks and result in potential exposure of the workers to unfamiliar odors emanating from headspace in the tanks. Given the unknown risks involved, workers were placed on supplied air respiratory protection. CH2MHILL, the managers of the

Potential for transmission of infections in networks of cattle farms.

The aim of this analysis is to evaluate how generic properties of networks of livestock farms connected by movements of cattle impact on the potential for spread of infectious diseases. We focus on endemic diseases with long infectious periods in affected cattle, such as bovine tuberculosis. Livestock farm networks provide a rare example of large but fully specified directed contact networks, allowing investigations into how properties of such networks impact the potential for spread of infections within them. Here we quantify the latter in terms of the basic reproduction number, R₀, and parti

Indirect sources of herbicide exposure for families on Ontario farms.

Although direct contact during mixing/loading, application or repair and clean-up is the major pathway by which individuals living on farms are exposed to herbicides, indirect sources such as contact with contaminated surfaces may also contribute. As part of a biomonitoring study to measure the nature and extent of exposure of farm families to herbicides, we attempted to identify potential indirect sources of exposure in a subset of 32 Ontario farms. Herbicide residues in drinking water samples as well as surface swipes of common surfaces within the home were measured and compared with urinary
