The polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of Brugia malayi microfilariae was analyzed by gas chromatography and compared to that of sera from B. malayi-infected jirds. The essential fatty acid, linoleic acid (18:2 omega 6), was the most abundant fatty acid present in both microfilarial total lipids and phospholipids as well as in jird sera. In contrast, arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6), as well as the 18:3 omega 6, 20:2 omega 6, and 20:3 omega 6 intermediates that are formed in the enzymatic conversion of linoleic acid to arachidonic acid, were proportionally more abundant in microfilariae tha

Diabetic cardiomyopathy may result from the overproduction of ROS, TRPM2 and TRPV2. Moreover, the therapeutic role of ginger, omega-3 fatty acids, and their combinations on the expression of TRPM2 and TRPV2 and their relationship with apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative damage in heart tissue of rats with type 2 diabetes have not yet been determined. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of ginger and omega-3 fatty acids on diabetic cardiomyopathy by evaluating the cardiac gene expression of TRPM2 and TRPV2, oxidative damage, inflammation, and apoptosis in male

Weanling male rats were fed hydrogenated coconut oil to induce essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. After 15 weeks, the rats were divided into six groups. Five groups were fed graded amounts of purified linolenate (18:3 omega 3) with a constant amount of linoleate (18:2 omega 6) for six weeks. Fatty acid composition was determined in brain lipids. Increasing dietary 18:3 omega 3 resulted in a decrease in arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6), docosatetraenoic acid (22:4 omega 6) and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 omega 6), whereas 18:2 omega 6 and eicosatrienoic acid (20:3 omega 6) were increased bot

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the omega-3 fatty acids help to improve erectile function in an atherosclerosis-induced erectile dysfunction rat model. A total of 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats at age 8 weeks were divided into three groups: Control group (n = 6, untreated sham operated rats), Pathologic group (n = 7, untreated rats with chronic pelvic ischemia [CPI]), and Treatment group (n = 7, CPI rats treated with omega-3 fatty acids). For the in vivo study, electrical stimulation of the cavernosal nerve was performed and erectile function was measured in all groups. Immunohis

Appendicoliths are commonly found obstructing the lumen of the appendix at the time of appendectomy. To identify factors that might contribute to their formation we investigated the composition of appendicoliths using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, polarized light microscopy, X-ray crystallography and protein mass spectroscopy. Forty-eight elements, 32 fatty acids and 109 human proteins were identified within the appendicoliths. The most common elements found in appendicoliths are calcium and phosphorus, 11.0 ± 6.0 and 8.2 ± 4.2% weight, respec

Emerging evidence suggests that soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibition is a valuable therapeutic strategy for the treatment of numerous diseases, including those of the liver. sEH rapidly degrades cytochrome P450-produced epoxygenated lipids (epoxy-fatty acids), which are synthesized from omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, that generally exert beneficial effects on several cellular processes. sEH hydrolysis of epoxy-fatty acids produces dihydroxy-fatty acids which are typically less biologically active than their parent epoxide. Efforts to develop sEH inhibitors have made ava

To test whether vitamin E deficiency might influence the course of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, Long Evans rats were fed diets containing a marginal amount (1.5% of calories) of 18:2 omega 6 or 18:3 omega 3 fatty acid with complete absence of the other and with or without vitamin E. Vitamin E contents decreased continuously in serum and liver in all rats fed the E-free diets but in the brains of only the rats fed the marginal 18:3 omega 3, E-free diet. It is considered that the vitamin E is cooxidized in the liver with 22:6 omega 3, since this fatty acid is very low in livers of the

OBJECTIVE: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play a role in pain regulation. This study sought to determine whether free PUFAs found in red blood cells also play a role in nociceptive processing. We examined associations between circulating PUFAs and nociceptive thresholds to noxious mechanical stimuli. We also determined whether nociceptive thresholds were associated with nociplastic pain conditions.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used stored red bloods cells and data from 605 adult participants in the OPPERA-2 study of chronic overlapping pain conditions. In OPPERA-2 adults completed

BACKGROUND: Studies indicated a depletion of omega-3 fatty acid levels and an imbalance between omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs in depressive patients. Depletion of omega-3 PUFAs may be related to the immune and serotonergic pathophysiologies of depression by alterations in membrane fluidity and modulation of membrane receptors, enzyme activities and carriers. Previous studies also found serotonergic and immunological disturbances in subjects with somatoform symptoms. Based on these findings we aimed to investigate PUFA concentrations and its relations to other biological systems in depressed patien

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) may increase the risk of suboptimal neurocognitive development in infants. Maternal supply of omega-3 and -6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), including eicosapentaeonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid, are critical for offspring brain development. To study the effects of GDM on offspring brain fatty acid composition, C57BL/6J mice were exposed to short-term high-fat diet feeding and low-dose streptozotocin treatments before pregnancy. Maternal blood glucose levels positively correlated to offspring brain omega 6:omega 3 ratio

Among the fatty acids, it is the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) which possess the most potent immunomodulatory activities, and among the omega-3 PUFA, those from fish oil-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)--are more biologically potent than alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Some of the effects of omega-3 PUFA are brought about by modulation of the amount and types of eicosanoids made, and other effects are elicited by eicosanoid-independent mechanisms, including actions upon intracellular signaling pathways, transcription factor activity and gene expression. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on the health outcomes of women with breast cancer in electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) for interventional studies. The risk of bias and the quality of the included articles were assessed by Cochrane Collaboration Handbook guidance. The statistical analyses were not conducted because of the heterogeneity of the included studies. Of 3676 identified articles, 11 articles were included in this study. The majority of the included studies were not of high quality. Median

This review outlines the health risks associated with excessive dietary intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly linoleic acid (C18:2n-6, LA), which is highly prevalent in the Western diet. It proposes a targeted nutritional strategy to reduce n-6 PUFA overconsumption and increase n-3 PUFA intake, aiming to restore a healthier fatty acid balance and counteract imbalance-induced pathogenetic consequences. The conceptual framework builds on the foundational insights of William E. M. Lands regarding PUFA-driven eicosanoid imbalance. It extends these principles by integratin
