Baicalin Modulates Hepatic Lipid Metabolism and Improves Intestinal Health in White-Feathered Broilers.

Liver and intestinal health govern the production performance of broilers. Baicalin (BA) is a flavonoid extracted from the dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis and possesses a wide range of biological activity. In this study, 66 one-day-old white-feathered broilers were selected and randomly divided into two groups. Broilers in the control group were fed a basal diet, whereas the BA group received the basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg BA. The results showed that BA supplementation markedly elevated the antioxidant capacity of the serum and liver (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the villus height/

Engineering in vitro-assembled beak and feather disease virus-like particles loaded with biomolecules.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is a member of the Circoviridae family and causes psittacine beak and feather diseases (PBFD) in birds. Abnormal feathers, brittle claws and beaks, and susceptibility to secondary infections are typical sympotoms of the BFDV-infected birds. The BFDV virion possesses a single-stranded DNA genome encapsidated within a 17-22 nm non-enveloped icosahedral virions. This study evaluated the loading capacity of BFDV virus-like particles (VLPs) with different biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The reassembled BFDV (ReBFDV) VLPs successfully encapsidated

Production and immunogenicity of a plant-produced beak and feather disease virus vaccine in Japanese quails.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a single-stranded DNA virus, infects endangered psittacine species, including the South African Cape parrot. The disease is highly contagious and can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces, crop secretions, and feather and skin dander. To date, there is no vaccine or cure available for BFDV. The production of an effective vaccine depends on having a production platform and methods that are both easy to use and capable of yielding a significant amount of protein that will induce a sufficient immune response. Therefore, the aim of this stud

Heat Stress Affects Jejunal Immunity of Yellow-Feathered Broilers and Is Potentially Mediated by the Microbiome.

In the perspective of the global climate change leading to increasing temperature, heat stress (HS) has become a severe issue in broiler production, including the indigenous yellow-feathered broilers. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of HS on jejunal immune response, microbiota structure and their correlation in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of forty female broilers (56-days-old) were randomly and equally divided into normal treatment group (NT group, 21.3 ± 1.2°C, 24 h/day) and HS group (32.5 ± 1.4°C, 8 h/day) with five replicates of each for 4 weeks feeding trial. Antibiotic treatment increases yellowness of carotenoid feather coloration in male greenfinches (Chloris chloris).

Carotenoid plumage coloration is an important sexually selected trait in many bird species. However, the mechanisms ensuring the honesty of signals based on carotenoid pigments remain unclear. It has recently been suggested that intestinal integrity, which is affected by gut parasites and microbiota and influences nutrient absorption and acquisition, mediates the relationship between carotenoid ornamentation and individual quality. Here, we test whether carotenoid plumage coloration in greenfinches (Chloris chloris) is affected by the treatment of an antibiotic or an antiparasitic drug. We cap

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in feathered game intended for human consumption in the Czech Republic.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important ubiquitous protozoan parasite, which can infect almost all warm-blooded vertebrates, including humans. The diagnosis of T. gondii infection is crucial for the prevention, surveillance, and control of its transmission. Here, a triplex real-time PCR assay targeting the B1 gene and 529rep element was used to determine the presence of T. gondii in feathered game (Anas platyrhynchos and Phasianus colchicus) hunted in the Czech Republic. The prevalence of T. gondii was 5.4% in wild ducks (n = 280) and 3.4% in common pheasants (n = 350). Additionally, genotyping of 2

Chronic bird fancier's lung presenting with acute exacerbation due to use of a feather duvet.

A 67-year-old man was admitted due to fever and exertional dyspnea. He used to raise budgerigars and hill mynahs from 1980 to 1988. He was diagnosed as having chronic bird fancier's lung (BFL) based on a positive peripheral lymphocyte proliferation to pigeon serum in 1994. His disease was stable until 2000. Three months before admission he became a daily user of a feather duvet. A chest CT showed newly-developed peribronchial ground-glass opacities and preexisting honeycombing. Inhalation provocation test was positive. Administration of steroids improved his condition. He has been well after r

First report on Cryptococcus laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus).

Although Cryptococcus laurentii has been isolated from fresh droppings and cloaca samples from feral pigeons, it has never before been associated with an actual disease condition in birds. This case study deals with the first report on C. laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus). The bird exhibited patchy feather loss, especially around the back and beak area, and greyish crusts sticking quite firmly to the underlying skin. The feathers had a greasy appearance and disseminated a musty odour. Treatment was installed with fluconazole in the drinking w

Whole-genome sequencing of Chlamydia psittaci from Australasian avian hosts: A genomics approach to a pathogen that still ruffles feathers.

Chlamydia psittaci is a globally distributed veterinary pathogen with zoonotic potential. Although C. psittaci infections have been reported in various hosts, isolation and culture of Chlamydia is challenging, hampering efforts to produce contemporary global C. psittaci genomes. This is particularly evident in the lack of avian C. psittaci genomes from Australia and New Zealand. In this study, we used culture-independent probe-based whole-genome sequencing to expand the global C. psittaci genome catalogue. Here, we provide new C. psittaci genomes from two pigeons, six psittacines, and novel ho

Revealing the spatial heterogeneity of the gut microbiota of red-feather ducks and their interaction with environmental microorganisms.

Ducks are one of important economic waterfowl species, and their gastrointestinal microbiota play crucial roles in nutrient metabolism, immune regulation, and host health maintenance. In this study, we collect 436 gastrointestinal content samples from red-feather ducks, including samples from the glandular stomach, muscular stomach, duodenum, ileum and cecum, as well as 10 environmental samples (water and soil). We then employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to explore the gastrointestinal microbial communities of ducks and their interactions with environmental microbes from soil and water. The gas

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Functional Dyspepsia Overlap: Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together?

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are 2 of the most prevalent upper gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in the Western world. Previous Rome definitions excluded patients with predominant heartburn from the definition of FD because they were considered to have GERD. However, more recent studies showed that heartburn and acid regurgitation are also common symptoms in patients with FD. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the prevalence of overlap between GERD and FD, the underlying pathophysiology and implications for treatment. METHODS

Brain monoamine levels and behaviour of young and adult chickens genetically selected on feather pecking.

Severe feather pecking (SFP) in chickens is a detrimental behaviour with possibly neurochemical deficits at its base. Recent neurological studies depicted conflicting results on the role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and dopamine (DA) in the development and display of feather pecking. We studied brain monoamine levels and behaviour in domestic chickens divergently genetically selected on feather pecking behaviour, the Low Feather Pecking (LFP) and High Feather Pecking (HFP) lines, both at a young age and when adult, to elucidate the role of 5-HT and DA in feather pecking. Also pecki

Different scales of spatial segregation of two species of feather mites on the wings of a passerine bird.

The "condition-specific competition hypothesis" proposes that coexistence of 2 species is possible when spatial or temporal variations in environmental conditions exist and each species responds differently to those conditions. The distribution of different species of feather mites on their hosts is known to be affected by intrinsic host factors such as structure of feathers and friction among feathers during flight, but there is also evidence that external factors such as humidity and temperature can affect mite distribution. Some feather mites have the capacity to move through the plumage ra

[A relapse of acute bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to the use of a feather duvet by a housemate].

In December 2007, a 78-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of cough and low-grade fever for 1 month. We performed various medical tests and diagnosed acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis. We suspected that the cause of illness was the prolonged use (10 years) of a feather duvet. She was treated with corticosteroids and was advised to avoid using feather duvets. This treatment improved her symptoms. However, she relapsed after 1 year. She had never used a feather duvet since the last admission, but her housemate used a feather duvet in the same room during winter. Bronchoalveo

Use of Pavo cristatus feather extract for the better management of snakebites: neutralization of inflammatory reactions.

In Indian traditional medicine, peacock feather in the form of ash (Bhasma) or water extract are used against snakebite and to treat various problems associated with lungs. This study was aimed to evaluate the water extract of peacock feather (PCF) against the local tissue damage caused due to snakebite. PCF water extract showed inhibition towards phospholipase A2 enzyme activity from snake venom (Naja naja and Vipera russelii), inflammatory fluids (synovial, pleural, ascites) and normal serum in a dose-dependent manner.
