Avian chlamydiosis, is a highly contagious, systemic disease occuring in domestic and wild birds. Chlamydia psittaci, the causative agent of the disease, is a gram-negative bacterium in the Chlamydiaceae family that can only live within the cell. The agent can be transmitted directly to humans by contact with infected animals or feces of infected animals. It can also be transmitted by inhalation of fecal dust. Since the disease has a zoonotic character, it is also important in terms of public health. By using the monoclonal antibodies against cell wall proteins (OMP) of C.psittaci, six (A-F) a

The heavy use or abuse of antimicrobials in food animals has caused an increase in antimicrobial resistance in enterococci of animal origin, which could get transmitted to those of human origin via the food chain. Since duck meat consumption has been on the rise in Korea, we conducted this study to provide information about the antimicrobial resistance of the enterococci obtained from healthy ducks and their carcasses. A total of 82 Enterococcus faecium and 174 E. faecalis isolated from duck fecal and carcass samples were investigated for antimicrobial resistance to 16 agents, using broth dilu

OBJECTIVE: Breast milk is an important source of bacteria in establishing the infantile intestinal microbiota that appear to influence the enterohepatic circulation of bilirubin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of breast milk's microbiological content on the development of breast milk jaundice (BMJ).
METHODS: A total number of 60 mother-infant pairs enrolled to the study. Two groups were defined: BMJ group (n=30), full-term otherwise healthy newborns who were considered BMJ; control group (n=30), full-term healthy newborns without jaundice. All newborns in the study we

Eight Aeromonas hydrophila-like arabinose-negative isolates from diverse sources (i.e., river freshwater, cooling-system water pond, diseased wild European eels, and human stools) sampled in Valencia (Spain) during 2004-2005, were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and extensive biochemical testing along with reference strains of most Aeromonas species. These isolates and all reference strains of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis and A. aquariorum showed a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 99.8-100%, and they all shared an identical phenotype. This matched exactly with that of A. hydrophila

Effective management of human cryptosporidiosis requires efficient methods for detection and identification of the species of Cryptosporidium isolates. Identification of isolates to the species level is not routine for diagnostic assessment of cryptosporidiosis, which leads to uncertainty about the epidemiology of the Cryptosporidium species that cause human disease. We developed a rapid and reliable method for species identification of Cryptosporidium oocysts from human fecal samples using terminal restriction fragment polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. This method generated

Giardia lamblia (syn G. intestinalis, G. duodenalis) is the intestinal protozoan producing non-bacterial diarrhea most prevalent in the world. PCR genotype classification of Giardia in feces depends on the quality and quantity of purified DNA and the removal of a great number of inhibitors. The aim of this study was to adapt a PCR protocol to the amplification of the triosephosphate isomerase (tpi) gene of Giardia lamblia in formalin-fixed feces. The tpi gene of G. lamblia was amplified in 28 of the 34 analyzed samples (82.35%) and the B genotype was obtained in all cases. Two major modificati

A study was undertaken on the presence and frequency of Listeria sp. in feces from 1,000 patients suffering from diarrheal diseases and from 2,000 healthy persons. Furthermore, the feces of patients were examined for other well-documented enteropathogens such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica, protozoa and rotavirus as well as for organisms of questionable enteropathogenic potency such as fungi, i.e. Candida. Finally, in continuation of previously described investigations of the enteropathogenic role of Proteus mirabilis but not of Proteus v

Investigating potential zoonotic viruses in animal reservoirs is crucial to anticipate viral emergence. Seals can represent large populations of coastal mammals with unknown consequences on the microbiological quality of their surrounding environment. To assess this, we conducted a metaviromics analysis of feces collected from two species of seals in the North-Western Atlantic (Saint-Pierre et Miquelon archipelago). We focused on the Caliciviridae family, which regroups several genera with viruses infecting humans and other mammals, including marine mammals, but none identified in seals (Phoci

Trypanosoma cruzi infection involves transmission of metacyclic trypomastigotes through injured skin or mucosa via contaminated feces from insect vectors like Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811). Currently, there is insufficient information describing the immune response to feces naturally contaminated with metacyclic trypomastigotes. Mice subcutaneously inoculated with tissue-culture derived trypomastigotes (TCT) or T. dimidiata feces containing metacyclic trypomastigotes (MT) or previously multi-exposed (ME) with feces without metacyclic trypomastigotes and then infected with feces containi

Unsafe child feces disposal (CFD) is another form of open defecation and can pose a risk of disease in children. More than 30% of Indonesian households practice unsafe CFD, yet, its determinants are unknown. This study aims to identify the contextual and behavioral determinants of CFD through the lens of the Risk, Attitude, Norm, Ability, and Self-regulation (RANAS) framework. The cross-sectional study was conducted in 349 households in the suburbs of Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, in mid-2023. About 64% of the respondents practiced unsafe CFD. Most respondents used diap

INTRODUCTION: The increase of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in zoonotic pathogens poses a substantial threat to both animal production and human health. Although large-scale animal farms are acknowledged as major reservoirs for AMR, there is a notable knowledge gap concerning AMR in small-scale farms. This study seeks to address this gap by collecting and analyzing 137 fecal samples from goat and sheep farms in Tennessee and Georgia.
METHOD: Bacteria were identified using culture-dependent methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) was perform

Yigong San (YGS) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula used for pediatric anorexia, chronic atrophic gastritis, and irritable bowel syndrome. In this study, the excretion of eight main compounds, including liquiritin; isoliquiritin; hesperidin; ginsenosides Rb1, Re, and Rg1; and atractylenolides I and II, in rat urine, feces, and bile, was investigated by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that the cumulative excretion rates of the compounds in rat urine, feces, and bile were 0.018-1.15%, 0.024-19.89%, and 0.0025-0.72%, respectively. A

In the present study, the excretion of four active components(qingyangshengenin, deacylmetaplexigenin, baishouwu benzophenone, and scopoletin) in Cynanchum auriculatum extract in the urine and feces of normal and functional dyspepsia(FD) rats was investigated. Rats were divided into a normal group and an FD model group. The FD model was induced by oral administration of ice hydrochloric acid combined with irregular feeding. The C. auriculatum extract was administered orally at a dose of 1 g·kg~(-1). The rat urine and feces were collected at 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, and 84 h for UPLC-ESI-M

Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis that is considered as the most severe parasitic disease in Europe. The contribution of cat to environmental contamination by E. multilocularis is generally considered as extremely low based on results of experimental infections and worm burden estimations from natural infections. However, the recent collection of numerous cat feces from kitchen gardens in high endemic areas and the detection of E. multilocularis DNA in a significant number of these feces raise the question of the risk of human transmission from cats.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence indicates that intestinal microbiota play a role in diverse metabolic processes via intestinal butyrate production. Human bariatric surgery data suggest that the gut-brain axis is also involved in this process, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.
METHODS: We compared the effect of fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) from post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) donors vs oral butyrate supplementation on (123I-FP-CIT-determined) brain dopamine transporter (DAT) and serotonin transporter (SERT) binding as well as stable isotope-determined insulin sensitivity at

BACKGROUND: We examined the performance of four in-clinic Giardia diagnostic tests by comparing results to three laboratory methods for detection of Giardia. A set of 177 fecal samples originally submitted to a commercial laboratory by veterinarians for routine ova and parasite (O&P) testing was used. Specimens were examined by direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) for presence of Giardia cysts which served as the gold standard. Fecal samples were tested using a Giardia-specific cyst wall antigen microtiter plate format enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and each of the in-clinic assays

Humans can be exposed to pathogens from poorly managed animal feces, particularly in communities where animals live in close proximity to humans. This systematic review of peer-reviewed and gray literature examines the human health impacts of exposure to poorly managed animal feces transmitted via water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related pathways in low- and middle-income countries, where household livestock, small-scale animal operations, and free-roaming animals are common. We identify routes of contamination by animal feces, control measures to reduce human exposure, and propose resear

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia felis is a common emerging pathogen detected in mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa. We hypothesized that, as with malaria, great apes may be exposed to the infectious bite of infected mosquitoes and release R. felis DNA in their feces.
METHODS: We conducted a study of 17 forest sites in Central Africa, testing 1,028 fecal samples from 313 chimpanzees, 430 gorillas and 285 bonobos. The presence of rickettsial DNA was investigated by specific quantitative real-time PCR. Positive results were confirmed by a second PCR using primers and a probe targeting a specific gene for R

PURPOSE: To compare the degradation kinetics of metronidazole and olsalazine by the bacteria of ascending colon and the bacteria of feces of healthy adults.
METHODS: Contents of the ascending colon of seven healthy adults were collected under conditions simulating the bioavailability/bioequivalence studies in the fasted and in the fed states on a crossover basis. Material from the contents of the ascending colon was prepared by ultracentrifuging and diluting the precipitate with a volume of normal saline equivalent to that of the supernatant. Fecal material was prepared from feces of three he
