Federated Medical Image Segmentation under Real-World Label Noise: A Benchmark Suite for Noisy Label Learning Method Selection.

While federated learning (FL) enables collaborative medical image segmentation without centralizing sensitive data, real-world deployment is frequently complicated by cross-site label imperfections such as contour disagreement, missing or additional structures, and confused labels. Federated noisy label learning (FNLL) aims to mitigate these effects, yet remains underused in practice as existing evidence is largely based on synthetic noise, simplified settings, and limited real-world noisy evaluation. We address this gap by introducing a benchmark suite that combines diverse real-world noisy d

Privacy-Preserving Glycemic Management in Type 1 Diabetes: Development and Validation of a Multiobjective Federated Reinforcement Learning Framework.

BACKGROUND: Effective diabetes management requires precise glycemic control to prevent both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, yet existing machine learning (ML) and reinforcement learning (RL) approaches often fail to balance competing objectives. Traditional RL-based glucose regulation systems primarily focus on single-objective optimization, overlooking factors such as minimizing insulin overuse, reducing glycemic variability, and ensuring patient safety. Furthermore, these approaches typically rely on centralized data processing, which raises privacy concerns due to the sensitive nature of he

Edge computing with federated learning for early detection of citric acid overdose and adjustment of regional citrate anticoagulation.

Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is critical for extracorporeal anticoagulation in continuous renal replacement therapy done at the bedside. To make patients' data more secure and to help with computer-based monitoring of dosages, we suggest a system that uses machine learning. This system will give early alerts about citric acid overdose and advise changes to how much citrate and calcium gluconate are infused into the patient's body. Citric acid overdose causes significant clinical risks, emphasizing the need for better adaptable anticoagulation procedures that can respond quickly. The

False-positive tolerant model misconduct mitigation in distributed federated learning on electronic health record data across clinical institutions.

As collaborative Machine Learning on cross-institutional, fully distributed networks become an important tool in predictive health modeling, its inherent security risks must be addressed. One among such risks is the lack of a mitigation strategy against injections of tampered models (or "model misconduct") into the collaborative pipeline, without excessive false alarms. We propose a false-positive tolerant methodology to preserve model integrity and mitigate the impacts of adversarial misconduct in a Federated Learning scenario. Our method grants false-positive detection leeway as each partici

Evaluation of federated learning variations for COVID-19 diagnosis using chest radiographs from 42 US and European hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: Federated learning (FL) allows multiple distributed data holders to collaboratively learn a shared model without data sharing. However, individual health system data are heterogeneous. "Personalized" FL variations have been developed to counter data heterogeneity, but few have been evaluated using real-world healthcare data. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a single-site versus a 3-client federated model using a previously described Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) diagnostic model. Additionally, to investigate the effect of system heterogeneity, we ev

Federated learning with multi-cohort real-world data for predicting the progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Leveraging routinely collected electronic health records (EHRs) from multiple health-care institutions, this approach aims to assess the feasibility of using federated learning (FL) to predict the progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We analyzed EHR data from the OneFlorida+ consortium, simulating six sites, and used a long short-term memory (LSTM) model with a federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm. A personalized FL approach was used to address between-site heterogeneity. Model performance was assessed using the area under the

Use of federated learning to develop an artificial intelligence model predicting usable blastocyst formation from pre-ICSI oocyte images.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Can federated learning be used to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model for evaluating oocyte competence using two-dimensional images of denuded oocytes in metaphase II prior to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)? RESULTS: The oocyte AI model demonstrated area under the curve (AUC) up to 0.65 on two blind test datasets. High sensitivity for predicting competent oocytes (83-88%) was offset by lower specificity (26-36%). Exclusion of confounding biological variables (male factor infertility and maternal age ≥35 years) improved AUC up to 14%, primarily due to incr

Genome interpretation in a federated learning context allows the multi-center exome-based risk prediction of Crohn's disease patients.

High-throughput sequencing allowed the discovery of many disease variants, but nowadays it is becoming clear that the abundance of genomics data mostly just moved the bottleneck in Genetics and Precision Medicine from a data availability issue to a data interpretation issue. To solve this empasse it would be beneficial to apply the latest Deep Learning (DL) methods to the Genome Interpretation (GI) problem, similarly to what AlphaFold did for Structural Biology. Unfortunately DL requires large datasets to be viable, and aggregating genomics datasets poses several legal, ethical and infrastruct

DMFL_Net: A Federated Learning-Based Framework for the Classification of COVID-19 from Multiple Chest Diseases Using X-rays.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still a threat to global health and safety, and it is anticipated that deep learning (DL) will be the most effective way of detecting COVID-19 and other chest diseases such as lung cancer (LC), tuberculosis (TB), pneumothorax (PneuTh), and pneumonia (Pneu). However, data sharing across hospitals is hampered by patients' right to privacy, leading to unexpected results from deep neural network (DNN) models. Federated learning (FL) is a game-changing concept since it allows clients to train models together without sharing their source data with anybody else.

FedEC-Dia: Explanation-Calibrated Federated Learning for Patient-Level Diabetes Digital Twin Risk Prediction Under Non-IID Healthcare Data.

Patient-level digital twins for diabetes oriented smart healthcare require risk models that can learn from distributed clinical data while remaining reliable across heterogeneous environments. Federated learning enables collaborative training without centralizing raw patient records, but non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data can cause weak-client prediction failure and inconsistent feature-use patterns. Site-specific differences in disease prevalence, clinical measurements, and risk profiles can therefore undermine stable patient state assessment. We propose FedEC-Dia, an

A hierarchical federated learning framework with FedNova, game-theoretic matching, and QKD-assisted privacy for the internet of vehicles.

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) supports essential intelligent transportation applications but encounters challenges in federated learning (FL) due to non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data, vehicle mobility, resource heterogeneity, and strict privacy requirements in latency-sensitive scenarios such as misbehavior detection and accident response. Traditional FL methods, such as random client selection and standard FedAvg, often experience slow convergence and reduced performance under non-IID conditions. We introduce a hierarchical federated learning framework for software-d

Lessons learned from people-centred TB care and support interventions in the Russian Federation.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, key TB indicators have improved in the Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts (FDs) of Russia, but these regions still face the challenge of reducing the numbers of patients with drug-resistant-TB and TB/HIV co-infection. TB care and support interventions recommended by the WHO have been implemented, such as home-based and outpatient treatment, use of digital technologies and provision of psychosocial support. METHODS: The study used a short survey to assess the influence of these interventions on patient adherence to treatment during the period 2018-2022 in t

VFedA: A Vertical Federated Learning Framework with Relational Alignment for Cross-Regional False Data Injection Attack Detection in Smart Grids.

Large-scale smart grids have introduced significant challenges for false data injection attack (FDIA) detection due to the distributed nature of power system operation and the limited observability of individual regions. Existing horizontal federated learning approaches enable collaborative model training without sharing raw data; however, they rely on local information and often fail to capture the global operational characteristics needed to detect sophisticated attacks. To address this limitation, the present paper proposes VFedA, a federated vertical relational alignment framework for FDIA

U-FDL-PPE: a unified federated deep learning framework with privacy-preserving explainability for early and accurate viral disease prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Early and accurate detection of viral diseases is vital for timely treatment and public health preparedness. However, most existing computer-based prediction systems depend on centralized data storage, which raises concerns about patient privacy, compatibility between different hospitals, and limited clarity on how predictions are made. To address these issues, this study introduces U-FDL-PPE, a new federated deep-learning framework designed to support early and reliable viral disease diagnosis while protecting patient confidentiality and offering clear and understandable predict

Patient clustering improves efficiency of federated machine learning to predict mortality and hospital stay time using distributed electronic medical records.

Electronic medical records (EMRs) support the development of machine learning algorithms for predicting disease incidence, patient response to treatment, and other healthcare events. But so far most algorithms have been centralized, taking little account of the decentralized, non-identically independently distributed (non-IID), and privacy-sensitive characteristics of EMRs that can complicate data collection, sharing and learning. To address this challenge, we introduced a community-based federated machine learning (CBFL) algorithm and evaluated it on non-IID ICU EMRs. Our algorithm clustered

Design of an improved graph-based model for real-time anomaly detection in healthcare using hybrid CNN-LSTM and federated learning.

Real-time monitoring and anomaly detection are essential in healthcare to ensure safe conditions for patients and maintain the integrity of medical data samples. The majority of existing systems, despite improvements in healthcare technologies, cannot capture the spatial and temporal patterns of multimodal data simultaneously, process high Volume data in real-time, and ensure the privacy of patients' identity effectively. In this work, we handle these limitations by proposing a complete approach that uses state-of-the-art deep learning and data processing architectures to realize resilient ano
