Role of auditory feedback in canary song development.

As in other songbirds, early deafening had drastic effects on the song of the roller canary, a cardueline finch, resulting in a song that was much simpler and more variable than the normal. The repertoire of the syllable types, of which the song is made, was reduced from 30 to a mean of 5.0. Loud white noise was successfully used as a reversible method of cutting off auditory feedback from vocal behavior. Although suffering permanent elevation of hearing thresholds, birds reared in noise to 200 days, singing at first like deaf birds, subsequently increased their syllable repertoires significan

Synergy Feedback Control Predicts Walking Across Multiple Cycles.

Neural feedback is important for healthy control of movement, and multiple neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, incomplete spinal cord injury) can be described by how they impair healthy feedback or induce unhealthy feedback. Researchers have created numerous computational neuromusculoskeletal models controlled by simulated neural feedback mechanisms, but these models rarely represent actual human subjects and thus have not found practical application in treating patients with movement impairments. As a step toward designing patient-specific treatments for

Phase Separation Induces Oscillations in Negative Feedback Loops.

Oscillations constitute a defining feature of nonequilibrium processes of life. We analyze a minimal degradation-mediated negative feedback loop, in which the final species in a linear cascade enzymatically degrades the first component. By coupling mean-field ordinary differential equations with a phase-separated component, we reveal novel inhibition scalings that expand the parameter regime supporting oscillations. Extending to arbitrary sublinear exponents and network sizes, we derive general bifurcation criteria and identify universal relations for oscillation onset in a reduced time-delay

Parkinsonian gait improvement through vibratory stride parameter feedback.

BACKGROUND: Hypokinetic gait increases morbidity and mortality of persons with Parkinson's disease and constitutes a major target symptom for therapy. Feedback on gait quality, e.g. by a physiotherapist, improves stride length and reduces shuffling. Wearable devices measuring gait parameters and providing feedback could improve parkinsonian gait during everyday life when no physiotherapist is available. Here, we report on the efficacy of a new device providing discreet vibratory feedback upon decreased stride length and increased shuffling. METHODS: 33 persons with Parkinson's disease, in two

Sensorimotor incongruence during walking using delayed visual feedback.

The ability to detect small errors between sensory prediction in the brain and actual sensory feedback is important in rehabilitation after brain injury, where motor function needs to be restored. To date in the recent study, a delayed visual error detection task during upper limb movement was used to measure this ability for healthy participants or patients. However, this ability during walking, which is the most sought-after in brain-injured patients, was unclear. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of walking parameters, the sense of body heaviness, and delayed err

Self-Accelerated Nanoregulators for Positive Feedback Ferroptosis-Immunotherapy.

Activating specific immunity through intelligent delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs shows great potential for effective tumor therapy. However, conventional tumor microenvironment-responsive nanomedicines are often difficult to achieve both specificity and sensitivity, leading to severe adverse effects or limited drug release efficiency. Furthermore, the immunosuppressive microenvironment of tumor will also seriously restrict the treatment efficacy. In this work, a cascade-responsive multi-polyprodrug nanoregulator is developed. Under the tumor microenvironment with high hydrogen peroxide leve

MDMA enhances positive affective responses to social feedback.

BACKGROUND: The prosocial compound ± 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an amphetamine derivative that has shown promise as an adjunct to psychotherapy in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. MDMA increases positive responses to social images, and it has been suggested that the ability of MDMA to positively bias social perception may underlie its therapeutic efficacy as a psychotherapy adjunct. However, the effect of the compound on affective responses to positive or negative social feedback has not been tested. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to test the effects of MDMA co

Functional underpinnings of feedback-enhanced test-potentiated encoding.

The testing effect describes the finding that retrieval practice enhances memory performance compared to restudy practice. Prior evidence demonstrates that this effect can be boosted by providing feedback after retrieval attempts (i.e. test-potentiated encoding [TPE]). The present fMRI study investigated the neural processes during successful memory retrieval underlying this beneficial effect of correct answer feedback compared with restudy and whether additional performance feedback leads to further benefits. Twenty-seven participants learned cue-target pairs by (i) restudying, (ii) standard

Supporting Novices Author Audio Descriptions via Automatic Feedback.

Audio descriptions (AD) make videos accessible to those who cannot see them. But many videos lack AD and remain inaccessible as traditional approaches involve expensive professional production. We aim to lower production costs by involving novices in this process. We present an AD authoring system that supports novices to write scene descriptions (SD)-textual descriptions of video scenes-and convert them into AD via text-to-speech. The system combines video scene recognition and natural language processing to review novice-written SD and feeds back what to mention automatically. To assess the

A positive feedback loop controls Toxoplasma chronic differentiation.

Successful infection strategies must balance pathogen amplification and persistence. In the obligate intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii this is accomplished through differentiation into dedicated cyst-forming chronic stages that avoid clearance by the host immune system. The transcription factor BFD1 is both necessary and sufficient for stage conversion; however, its regulation is not understood. In this study we examine five factors that are transcriptionally activated by BFD1. One of these is a cytosolic RNA-binding protein of the CCCH-type zinc-finger family, which we name bradyzoite

Growth-mediated negative feedback shapes quantitative antibiotic response.

Dose-response relationships are a general concept for quantitatively describing biological systems across multiple scales, from the molecular to the whole-cell level. A clinically relevant example is the bacterial growth response to antibiotics, which is routinely characterized by dose-response curves. The shape of the dose-response curve varies drastically between antibiotics and plays a key role in treatment, drug interactions, and resistance evolution. However, the mechanisms shaping the dose-response curve remain largely unclear. Here, we show in Escherichia coli that the distinctively sha

Simplified feedback control system for scanning tunneling microscopy.

A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is one of the most important scanning probe tools available to study and manipulate matter at the nanoscale. In a STM, a tip is scanned on top of a surface with a separation of a few Å. Often, the tunneling current between the tip and the sample is maintained constant by modifying the distance between the tip apex and the surface through a feedback mechanism acting on a piezoelectric transducer. This produces very detailed images of the electronic properties of the surface. The feedback mechanism is nearly always made using a digital processing circuit sep

Serotonin Attenuates Feedback Excitation onto O-LM Interneurons.

The serotonergic system is a subcortical neuromodulatory center that controls cortical information processing in a state-dependent manner. In the hippocampus, serotonin (5-HT) is released by ascending serotonergic fibers from the midbrain raphe nuclei, thereby mediating numerous modulatory functions on various neuronal subtypes. Here, we focus on the neuromodulatory effects of 5-HT on GABAergic inhibitory oriens lacunosum-moleculare (O-LM) cells in the hippocampal area CA1 of the rat. These interneurons are thought to receive primarily local excitatory input and are, via their axonal projectio

Alcohol impairs brain reactivity to explicit loss feedback.

RATIONALE: Alcohol impairs the brain's detection of performance errors as evidenced by attenuated error-related negativity (ERN), an event-related potential (ERP) thought to reflect a brain system that monitors one's behavior. However, it remains unclear whether alcohol impairs performance-monitoring capacity across a broader range of contexts, including those entailing external feedback. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether alcohol-related monitoring deficits are specific to internal recognition of errors (reflected by the ERN) or occur also in external cuing contexts. We evalua

Can metric feedback training hinder actions involving distance?

OBJECTIVE: The present studies tested whether distance estimation training with metric feedback can degrade the performance of untrained primarily perceptual-motor tasks. BACKGROUND: Training with metric feedback can improve distance estimations. However, previous research led to the conclusion that those improvements stemmed from changes in cognitive processing rather than in perception. If trainees applied their new cognitive strategies to primarily perceptual-motor tasks, then the performance of those tasks should degrade. The present studies tested that possibility. METHOD: Experiment 1

Self-esteem, performance feedback, and cardiovascular stress reactivity.

This study sought to establish the impact of performance-related feedback on cardiovascular responses to stressors, and whether this impact is influenced by individual differences in self-esteem. A total of 66 college women were categorized as either high or low in self-esteem on the basis of their scores in a standardized psychometric test. They then took part in a laboratory experiment, in which they were assigned to one of three performance-feedback manipulations. Following the provision of feedback on an initial laboratory task (picture-matching), they undertook a second task (mental arith

Estrogen blockade reduces auditory feedback in CBA mice.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of estrogen suppression on age-related changes in distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and contralateral suppression (CS) of DPOAEs in CBA mice. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Young CBA mice received a slow-release shoulder implantation of either tamoxifen or placebo. Serial DPOAEs and CS of DPOAEs were obtained at 3-week intervals over a period of 9 weeks. RESULTS: Although DPOAEs were maintained over the study interval, CS of DPOAEs decreased significantly with age in the experimental group. No such declines were observed in either the control anim

Feedback regulation of pathogen-specific T cell priming.

MHC class I-restricted antigen presentation is an essential step in the priming of CD8 T lymphocytes during immune responses to infection. While microbial growth and clearance have been accurately measured in mammalian hosts, the duration of functional antigen presentation during infection remains undefined in vivo. Herein we characterize the activation of naive and memory T cells at different times during bacterial infection. Surprisingly, the host's ability to prime T cells is of much shorter duration than bacterial infection, inversely correlating with the development of pathogen-specific c
