Interpretable deep survival analysis of Alzheimer's disease via metabolic genetic variants.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Traditional models for estimating AD onset cannot capture nonlinear interactions (epistasis) among the numerous genetic variables that contribute to AD risk. METHODS: We developed a feedforward neural network (FFN)-Weibull survival model to predict AD onset using large-scale single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data. We integrated an XAI technique, Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), to address the black-box nature of deep learning, interpret model predictions, and quantify the contribution of each genetic fact

Delay-Embedded Neural Reconstruction for Indirect Sensing in Electrical and Micromechanical Oscillating Systems.

This paper addresses indirect sensing in resonant, oscillating, and periodically forced sensors, where the physical measurand is not directly available as a static output but is encoded in the dynamic response of the device. The sensor and its excitation are described as a single autonomous system, in which the excitation phase and the slowly varying measurand define a compact state representation after the decay of transients. Within this setting, delayed samples of the available output define an observation map that can be inverted, under suitable smoothness and observability conditions, to

Development of machine learning models to determine CO2 seepage in the ocean based on the seepage and non-seepage database.

CCS is gaining attention as a measure against the global warming. In Japan, a CCS operator must conduct monitoring to check whether CO2 stored under the seabed safely and, if high CO2 concentration in seawater is detected, reinvestigation is legally required. In the CCS demonstration project conducted offshore Tomakomai, Japan, seawater monitoring continues even after the injection well was closed in 2019. Since the project began, false positives have frequently led to the need for reinvestigation. This is because the indicator used is based on the criterion whether data points exceed the uppe

Achieving Occam's razor: Deep learning for optimal model reduction.

All fields of science depend on mathematical models. Occam's razor refers to the principle that good models should exclude parameters beyond those minimally required to describe the systems they represent. This is because redundancy can lead to incorrect estimates of model parameters from data, and thus inaccurate or ambiguous conclusions. Here, we show how deep learning can be powerfully leveraged to apply Occam's razor to model parameters. Our method, FixFit, uses a feedforward deep neural network with a bottleneck layer to characterize and predict the behavior of a given model from its inpu

Predicting Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Levels from Videos Using the Facial Action Coding System.

We present the first study in the literature that has aimed to determine Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) levels by analyzing facial expressions using Facial Action Coding System (FACS) by means of a unique noninvasive architecture on three layers designed to offer high accuracy and fast convergence: in the first layer, Active Appearance Models (AAM) and a set of multiclass Support Vector Machines (SVM) are used for Action Unit (AU) classification; in the second layer, a matrix is built containing the AUs' intensity levels; and in the third layer, an optimal feedforward neural network (F

Deep learning guided prediction modeling of dengue virus evolving serotype.

Evolution remains an incessant process in viruses, allowing them to elude the host immune response and induce severe diseases, impacting the diagnostic and vaccine effectiveness. Emerging and re-emerging diseases are among the significant public health concerns globally. The revival of dengue is mainly due to the potential for naturally arising mutations to induce genotypic alterations in serotypes. These transformations could lead to future outbreaks, underscoring the significance of studying DENV evolution in endemic regions. Predicting the emerging Dengue Virus (DENV) genome is crucial as t

Branched Latent Neural Maps.

We introduce Branched Latent Neural Maps (BLNMs) to learn finite dimensional input-output maps encoding complex physical processes. A BLNM is defined by a simple and compact feedforward partially-connected neural network that structurally disentangles inputs with different intrinsic roles, such as the time variable from model parameters of a differential equation, while transferring them into a generic field of interest. BLNMs leverage latent outputs to enhance the learned dynamics and break the curse of dimensionality by showing excellent in-distribution generalization properties with small t

Early detection of Alzheimer's disease using deep learning methods.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD), a leading cause of dementia, requires early detection for effective intervention. This study employs AI to analyze multimodal datasets, including clinical, biomarker, and neuroimaging data, using hybrid deep learning frameworks to improve predictive accuracy. METHODS: A novel framework was developed, including trained models for structured data and magnetic resonance images. The structured data model used a long short-term memory (LSTM) for temporal dependencies and a feedforward neural network (FNN) for static patterns. The MRI-based model employed Res

Parallel pathways convey olfactory information with opposite polarities in Drosophila.

In insects, olfactory information received by peripheral olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) is conveyed from the antennal lobes (ALs) to higher brain regions by olfactory projection neurons (PNs). Despite the knowledge that multiple types of PNs exist, little is known about how these different neuronal pathways work cooperatively. Here we studied the Drosophila GABAergic mediolateral antennocerebral tract PNs (mlPNs), which link ipsilateral AL and lateral horn (LH), in comparison with the cholinergic medial tract PNs (mPNs). We examined the connectivity of mlPNs in ALs and found that most mlPNs

Predicting wettability of mineral/CO2/brine systems via data-driven machine learning modeling: Implications for carbon geo-sequestration.

Effectively storing carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations synergizes with algal-based removal technology, enhancing carbon capture efficiency, leveraging biological processes for sustainable, long-term sequestration while aiding ecosystem restoration. On the other hand, geological carbon storage effectiveness depends on the interactions and wettability of rock, CO2, and brine. Rock wettability during storage determines the CO2/brine distribution, maximum storage capacity, and trapping potential. Due to the high CO2 reactivity and damage risk, an experimental assessment of the CO2 wetta

Detecting the impact of diagnostic procedures in Pap-positive women on anxiety using artificial neural networks.

INTRODUCTION: Women who receive a result of an abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) smear can fail to participate in follow up procedures, and this is often due to anxiety. This study aimed to apply artificial neural networks (ANN) in prediction of anxiety in women with an abnormal Pap smear test, prior to and following diagnostic procedures. METHODS: One hundred-seventy two women who received an abnormal Pap screening result took part in this study, completing a questionnaire about socio-demographic characteristics and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), right before and two to four weeks a

Indoor 2D Positioning Method for Mobile Robots Based on the Fusion of RSSI and Magnetometer Fingerprints.

Received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based fingerprinting is a widely used technique for indoor localization, but these methods suffer from high error rates due to various reflections, interferences, and noises. The use of disturbances in the magnetic field in indoor localization methods has gained increasing attention in recent years, since this technology provides stable measurements with low random fluctuations. In this paper, a novel fingerprinting-based indoor 2D positioning method, which utilizes the fusion of RSSI and magnetometer measurements, is proposed for mobile robots. The me

Threat Response System: Parallel Brain Processes in Pain vis-à-vis Fear and Anxiety.

Pain is essential for avoidance of tissue damage and for promotion of healing. Notwithstanding the survival value, pain brings about emotional suffering reflected in fear and anxiety, which in turn augment pain thus giving rise to a self-sustaining feedforward loop. Given such reciprocal relationships, the present article uses neuroscientific conceptualizations of fear and anxiety as a theoretical framework for hitherto insufficiently understood pathophysiological mechanisms underlying chronic pain. To that end, searches of PubMed-indexed journals were performed using the following Medical Sub

Hybrid genetic algorithm-neural network: feature extraction for unpreprocessed microarray data.

OBJECTIVE: Suitable techniques for microarray analysis have been widely researched, particularly for the study of marker genes expressed to a specific type of cancer. Most of the machine learning methods that have been applied to significant gene selection focus on the classification ability rather than the selection ability of the method. These methods also require the microarray data to be preprocessed before analysis takes place. The objective of this study is to develop a hybrid genetic algorithm-neural network (GANN) model that emphasises feature selection and can operate on unpreprocesse

Hyperexcitability in the olfactory bulb and impaired fine odor discrimination in the Fmr1 KO mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the single most common monogenetic cause of autism spectrum disorders in humans. FXS is caused by loss of expression of the Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), an mRNA-binding protein encoded on the X chromosome involved in suppressing protein translation. Sensory processing deficits have been a major focus of studies of FXS in both humans and rodent models of FXS, but olfactory deficits remain poorly understood. Here we conducted experiments in wild-type and Fmr1 KO ( Fmr1 -/y ) mice (males) that lack expression of the gene encoding FMRP to ass

Leveraging neural network models for drug repurposing: a case study on cardiac hypertrophy.

Drug repurposing has emerged as an attractive strategy in contemporary pharmaceutical research, presenting an opportunity to expedite drug discovery, minimize developmental costs, and mitigate risks associated with developing new pharmaceuticals. In this study, we investigated a novel approach based on deep learning of human transcriptomic mechanisms for systematic identification of additional therapeutic potential in preexisting drugs. We trained a composite feedforward neural network model using gene expression data sourced from the ARCHS4 compilation of the GEO, encompassing extensive human
