Laccase2-Mediated Mandibular Development Is Crucial for Larval Feeding Behavior in the Silkworm, Bombyx mori.

The phenoloxidase gene Laccase2 (Lac2) is an indispensable survival gene in insects, playing key roles in cuticle tanning, exoskeleton development and pigment deposition. However, in lepidopteran insects, the roles of Lac2 in mandibular development and feeding behavior remain largely unexplored. In this study, we demonstrated that Lac2 is essential for mandibular development in early larvae of the model lepidopteran, the silkworm, Bombyx mori. We cloned and characterized BmLac2 and found that it is evolutionarily conserved in lepidopteran insects. Disruption of BmLac2 via CRISPR/Cas9 system in

Eco-epidemiological Insights into Psammolestes arthuri: Trypanosoma cruzi Infection and Feeding Behavior in Casanare, Colombia.

Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects millions of people and is primarily transmitted by triatomine bugs. Although Psammolestes arthuri has been traditionally classified as a secondary vector due to its predominantly ornithophilic feeding habits, recent findings suggest that its ecological and behavioral traits may enhance its epidemiological relevance. We hypothesized that P. arthuri exhibits natural infection rates, flexible feeding behavior with frequent mammalian contacts, and spatial variation in parasite load that challenge its conventional classific

Unveiling the Impact of Rapeseed Meal on Feeding Behavior and Anorexigenic Endocrine in Litopenaeus vannamei.

Litopenaeus vannamei, with high plant protein acceptance and high global aquaculture production, is a potential species for rapeseed meal application. However, rapeseed meal has been associated with anorexia in fish, and whether the same occurs in L. vannamei remains unknown. This study demonstrated the effects of rapeseed meal on the feeding and anorexigenic endocrine of L. vannamei based on feeding behavior and transcriptomics. Soybean meal was replaced with fermented rapeseed meal (50%), and a significant increase in remaining diet and dietary discard was observed with a significant reducti

An all 2D bio-inspired gustatory circuit for mimicking physiology and psychology of feeding behavior.

Animal behavior involves complex interactions between physiology and psychology. However, most AI systems neglect psychological factors in decision-making due to a limited understanding of the physiological-psychological connection at the neuronal level. Recent advancements in brain imaging and genetics have uncovered specific neural circuits that regulate behaviors like feeding. By developing neuro-mimetic circuits that incorporate both physiology and psychology, a new emotional-AI paradigm can be established that bridges the gap between humans and machines. This study presents a bio-inspired

Acute and long-term effects of psilocybin on energy balance and feeding behavior in mice.

Psilocybin and other serotonergic psychedelics have re-emerged as therapeutics for neuropsychiatric disorders, including addiction. Psilocybin induces long-lasting effects on behavior, likely due to its profound ability to alter consciousness and augment neural connectivity and plasticity. Impaired synaptic plasticity in obesity contributes to 'addictive-like' behaviors, including heightened motivation for palatable food, and excessive food seeking and consumption. Here, we evaluate the effects of psilocybin on feeding behavior, energy metabolism, and as a weight-lowering agent in mice. We dem

Concentrate Supplement Modifies the Feeding Behavior of Simmental Cows Grazing in Two High Mountain Pastures.

During grazing on Alpine pastures, the use of concentrates in dairy cows' diet leads to a reduction of the environmental sustainability of farms, and influences the selective pressure on some plant species. In order to minimize the use of concentrates, it is imperative to obtain data on the grazing behavior of cows. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of concentrate levels on the behavior of dairy cows during grazing. One hundred and ten lactating Italian Simmental cows, that sequentially grazed two pastures characterized by Poion alpinae (Poion) and Seslerion caeruleae (Seslerion)

The carnivorous feeding behavior of early Homo at HWK EE, Bed II, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

The regular consumption of large mammal carcasses, as evidenced by butchery marks on fossils recovered from Early Stone Age archaeological sites, roughly coincides with the appearance of Homo habilis. However, the significance of this niche expansion cannot be appreciated without an understanding of hominin feeding behavior and their ecological interactions with mammalian carnivores. The Olduvai Geochronology and Archaeology Project (OGAP) has recovered a large and well-preserved fossil assemblage from the HWK EE site, which was deposited just prior to the first appearance of Acheulean technol

Effect of neuropeptide B on feeding behavior is influenced by endogenous corticotropin-releasing factor activities.

Decrease in food intake is commonly seen in the mammalian response to stress. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a factor that modulates feeding behavior under these stressful conditions. We previously reported that neuropeptide B (NPB) exerts strong synergistic anorectic effects in mice when co-administered with CRF. Tissue distributions of neuropeptide B/W receptor-1 (NPBWR1) and NPB suggest that this neuropeptide system also plays a role in regulating emotion and stress responses. In this study, we examined whether the effects of NPB are altered by endogenous CRFergic tone. During the

Feeding behavior modulation in the leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii): effects of noxious versus innocuous prey.

Feeding, a fundamentally rhythmic behavior in many animals, is expected to exhibit modulation with respect to prey type. Using high-speed videography (200 frames(-1)) and kinematic analysis, we investigated prey-processing behavior in the long-nosed leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii). The effects of two prey types were examined, innocuous immature crickets (Acheta domesticus) and noxious stinging hymenopterans (honeybees [Apis mellifer] and yellow jackets [Vespula sp.]). Stinging hymenopterans are processed more extensively, with higher gape-cycling frequencies, and for a greater duration th

Feeding behavior of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), a putative vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela.

Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga & Feliciangeli is the first new sand fly species in the L. longipalpis species complex that has been formally described since it was separated by genetic as well as by morphological characters. It is the putative vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis in La Rinconada, Curarigua, a restricted focus in central western Venezuela. We investigated the feeding behavior of this species. The blood meals from 210 of 429 (48.9%) engorged females caught by CDC light traps were identified by a dot enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay using antisera against hu

Subchronic studies on modulation of feeding behavior and body weight by neurosteroids in female mice.

Neurosteroids have shown promising therapeutic potential in a wide variety of neuropsychiatric and cognitive disorders. However, little research has been done on their role for the treatment of eating disorders and regulation of energy balance in the body. In the present study, subchronic treatment with the neuroactive steroid progesterone (10 mg/kg s.c.) for 28 days produced significant increases in body weight and elicited marked hyperphagia as compared to a vehicle-treated control group at all time intervals as observed on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. On the other hand, subchronic treatment wi

The Drosophila takeout gene is a novel molecular link between circadian rhythms and feeding behavior.

We report the characterization of a novel Drosophila circadian clock-regulated output gene, takeout (to). The to amino acid sequence shows similarity to two ligand binding proteins, including juvenile hormone binding protein. to mRNA is expressed in the head and the cardia, crop, and antennae-structures related to feeding. to expression is induced by starvation, which is blocked in all arrhythmic central clock mutants, suggesting a direct molecular link between the circadian clock and the feeding/starvation response. A to mutant has aberrant locomotor activity and dies rapidly in response to s

Permanent impairment in the feeding behavior of grayling (Thymallus thymallus) exposed to methylmercury during embryogenesis.

Embryos of grayling (Thymallus thymallus) were exposed to different concentrations of methylmercury (0.16, 0.8, 4.0 and 20 micrograms Hg l-1) during the first 10 days of development. The exposure resulted in body concentrations in the newly hatched fry of 0.09, 0.27, 0.63 and 3.80 micrograms Hg g-1 wet wt., respectively. A control group had a body concentration of 0.01 microgram Hg g-1. Morphological disturbances were only found in the highest exposure group. Three years later, at a size of 13.8 +/- 0.8 cm, the different groups were tested for sublethal toxicant effects on foraging behavior. I

Effects of corn grain endosperm type and conservation method on feed intake, feeding behavior, and productive performance of lactating dairy cows.

Our objective was to evaluate the effects of corn grain varying in endosperm type and conserved as high-moisture or dry ground corn on dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation, and yields of milk and milk components of cows in early to mid-lactation. Seven ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows (73 ± 39 d in milk; mean ± SD) were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used with main effects of corn grain endosperm type (floury or vitreous) conserved as high-moisture corn (HMC) or dry gr

Comparison of methods to predict feed intake and residual feed intake using behavioral and metabolite data in addition to classical performance variables.

Predicting dry matter intake (DMI) and feed efficiency by leveraging the use of data streams available on farm could aid efforts to improve the feed efficiency of dairy cattle. Residual feed intake (RFI) is the difference between predicted and observed feed intake after accounting for body size, body weight change, and milk production, making it a valuable metric for feed efficiency research. Our objective was to develop and evaluate DMI and RFI prediction models using multiple linear regression (MLR), partial least squares regression, artificial neural networks, and stacked ensembles using di

[Consumption and ruminating behavior in sheep. 3. Experiments on infertile female sheep of different breeds with reference to feed type and feeding duration].

Ewes of the breeds merino fattening sheep, Stavropol merino and fertility hybrid were studied as to their consumption and ruminating behaviour after receiving a pelleted straw-concentrate mixture, maize silage and wilted silaged grass. During the feeding periods of 2 X 45 min or 2 X 180 min/d unlimited rations were available to the animals. With 86 min/d the sheep used the short feeding period nearly completely for feed intake. In the longer feeding period the sheep consumed 18% more feed in 161 min/d, ate more slowly, however, and ruminated somewhat less. In comparison with the straw-concentr
