A method for noninvasive individual genotyping of black-footed cat (Felis nigripes).

The black-footed cat (Felis nigripes) is endemic to the arid regions of southern Africa. One of the world's smallest wild felids, the species occurs at low densities and is secretive and elusive, which makes ecological studies difficult. Genetic data could provide key information such as estimates on population size, sex ratios, and genetic diversity. In this study, we test if microsatellite loci can be successfully amplified from scat samples that could be noninvasively collected from the field. Using 21 blood and scat samples collected from the same individuals, we statistically tested wheth

Molecular Detection of Rickettsia felis in Fleas of Companion Animals in East Texas.

Flea-borne spotted fever is an emerging insect-borne rickettsial infection caused by Rickettsia felis and has been identified worldwide. This study sought to explore the prevalence of rickettsiae associated with fleas on companion dogs and cats from Walker and Montgomery Counties in East Texas. Fleas were collected from animals entering local veterinary clinics for routine checkups. Collected fleas were identified as Ctenocephalides felis or Pulex irritans and analyzed by polymerase chain reaction for the presence of rickettsiae and subsequent sequencing. An estimation of the bcMLE (bias-corre

Is the free-ranging jaguar (Panthera onca) a reservoir for Cytauxzoon felis in Brazil?

This study investigated the occurrence of Cytauxzoon felis and Babesia spp. in free-ranging jaguars (Panthera onca), domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and domestic cats (Felis catus) from the Cerrado, Amazon and Pantanal biomes of Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 30 jaguars, 129 dogs and 22 cats for detection of the 18S rRNA genes of piroplasmids. All of the jaguars from the Pantanal (n=22) and Cerrado (n=4) and three of four jaguars from the Amazon were positive for C. felis, but no dogs or cats were positive for the agent. All of the jaguars and domestic cats were negative for

Serological evidence of exposure to Rickettsia felis and Rickettsia typhi in Australian veterinarians.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia felis and Rickettsia typhi are emerging arthropod-borne zoonoses causing fever and flu-like symptoms. Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with exposure to these organisms was explored in Australian veterinarians. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-one veterinarians from across Australia were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional survey. Veterinarians provided a single blood sample and answered a questionnaire on potential risk factors influencing their exposure to R. felis and R. typhi. Indirect microimmunofluorescence antibody testing (IFAT) was used to ide

A Mutation in LTBP2 Causes Congenital Glaucoma in Domestic Cats (Felis catus).

The glaucomas are a group of diseases characterized by optic nerve damage that together represent a leading cause of blindness in the human population and in domestic animals. Here we report a mutation in LTBP2 that causes primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) in domestic cats. We identified a spontaneous form of PCG in cats and established a breeding colony segregating for PCG consistent with fully penetrant, autosomal recessive inheritance of the trait. Elevated intraocular pressure, globe enlargement and elongated ciliary processes were consistently observed in all affected cats by 8 weeks of a

Efficacy of a novel formulation of metaflumizone for the control of fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) on cats.

A novel spot-on formulation containing metaflumizone (ProMeris for Cats, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, KS) was evaluated in five laboratory studies to determine the duration of residual efficacy in cats against fleas after a single spot treatment. In each study, eight domestic shorthair cats were randomly allocated to each treatment group and individually housed. One group in each study remained non-treated. In one study, an additional group of eight cats was treated with a placebo formulation. Cats were treated topically with metaflumizone formulation to provide a dose of at least

Detection of Cryptosporidium felis and Giardia duodenalis Assemblage F in a cat colony.

Eighteen cats, 3-6 months of age, bred and housed in a closed colony, were transferred from that colony and placed in separate stainless steel cages in a building designed for housing animals. At daily intervals, feces were collected from the litter pans in each cage, pans and cages were cleaned, and fresh food and water were provided. Beginning 4 weeks after the transfer, oocysts of Cryptosporidium were detected in the feces of two cats by brightfield microscopy. For the following 21 days, with minor exceptions, feces from each cat were collected daily and examined by immunofluorescence micro

The susceptibility of domestic cats (Felis catus) to experimental infection with Leishmania braziliensis.

Over the last few years, several cases of feline leishmaniasis (FL) with cutaneous and visceral forms have been reported around the world. Nonetheless, the real susceptibility of cats to infection with Leishmania spp. and the outcome of leishmaniasis in these animals are poorly understood. Experimental studies on feline models will contribute to the knowledge of natural FL. Thus, in order to determine the susceptibility of domestic cats (Felis catus) to experimental infection with Leishmania braziliensis, 13 stray cats were infected with 10(7) promastigotes by the intradermal route in the ear

Pathogen carriage by the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché) in the United Kingdom.

The carriage of Bartonella, Rickettsia felis and haemoplasma species was investigated in cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) collected from 121 cats and dogs in the United Kingdom. DNA extracted from fleas was analysed using genus and species-specific PCR and amplicons were characterised using DNA sequencing. Fifty percent of flea samples were PCR positive for at least one pathogen. Twenty one percent were positive for R. felis, 17% for Bartonella henselae, 40% for haemoplasma species and 20% were infected with more than one of the pathogen species studied. It is clear from the results in this s

Isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from the nails of domestic cats (Felis catus).

We report the first isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from the nail surfaces of cats. The fungus grew from nail clippings of three cats associated with three household outbreaks of sporotrichosis involving cats and human beings. The identification of the isolates was based on macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics at 25 degrees C and conversion of S. schenckii to the yeast-like form at 37 degrees C.

Gastric ulcer associated with a Helicobacter-like organism in a cougar (Felis concolor).

A 12-year-old captive female cougar (Felis concolor) died following perforation of a gastric ulcer. Histologically, erosions and ulcers were present in the antral area of the stomach. Fibroplasia and infiltrates of neutrophils bordered the ulcers. Modified Steiner silver stain revealed numerous tightly coiled helical bacteria. The bacteria stained positively with a rabbit polyclonal anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody. Morphology, location, and positive immunohistochemical staining suggests that the organism is a Helicobacter.

The importance of local acid production in the distribution of Helicobacter felis in the mouse stomach.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter felis colonizes the gastric mucosa of rodents. Preliminary studies showed differences in the distribution of the organism in different parts of the stomach that seemed related to the secretory capacity of the mucosa. The aim of this study was to determine the localization of H. felis in the mouse stomach and to investigate the influence of acid-suppressive agents. METHODS: Specific-pathogen-free BALB/c mice were infected with H. felis. Colonization was assessed in longitudinal sections of gastric tissue from animals untreated or treated with omeprazole or ranitid

Helicobacter felis as a cofactor alone or together with stress in cryptosporidial activation in mice.

Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a protozoan parasite, mainly found in animals, which usually results in transient, mild gastroenteritis in humans but can cause severe and prolonged disease in immunocompromised individuals. Immunocompetent mice, naturally infected with Cryptosporidium muris, were used to investigate the effects of inoculation with Helicobacter felis and of stress on the activity of the C. muris infection, as indicated by histopathological examination of their stomachs. The results indicate that both H. felis inoculation and/or stress activate C. muris and cause gastric inflammat

Monoclonal antibodies to Afipia felis--a putative agent of cat scratch disease.

Twelve hybridoma clones producing monoclonal antibodies to Afipia felis, a putative causative agent of cat scratch disease, were derived from BALB/c mice immunized with A felis. All 12 monoclonal antibodies were species-specific for A felis and reacted with lipopolysaccharide antigens of A felis. These monoclonal antibodies belong to immunoglobulin (Ig) G1, IgG2a, IgG2b, IgG3, and IgM isotypes. All monoclonal antibodies reacted with both agar-grown A felis and tissue culture-propagated A felis. Formalin fixation did not alter the reactivity of the antigen with the monoclonal antibodies. Studies on the biochemical structure of the major cat allergen Felis domesticus I.

The major cat allergen, Fel d I, was purified to homogeneity from cat dander extract by sequential mAb affinity chromatography and HPLC size exclusion. The purity and allergenic activity of the preparation was demonstrated by different techniques such as HPLC, RAST inhibition, skin prick tests and CIE/CRIE. Fel d I showed a mol. wt of about 35,000 by HPLC gel filtration and of 18,000 by SDS-PAGE, confirming that it is a non-covalently linked dimer. However, SDS-PAGE analysis under reducing conditions as well as labelling experiments with 14C-iodoacetamide of 2-ME-reduced Fel d I showed that ea

Carriage of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli in urban stray cats (Felis catus).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli is a growing concern in both human and veterinary medicine, driven by the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. Companion animals may act as community reservoirs and sentinels for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria due to their close contact with humans and other animals. However, resistance carriage in urban stray cats is poorly defined, particularly as many have limited direct antimicrobial exposure. This population provides an opportunity to assess baseline antimicrobial resistance carriage in companion animals with relatively low selection pr

Faecal Steroid Metabolite Profiles and Reproductive Outcomes in Domestic Cat (Felis catus).

Research on endocrine patterns associated with reproduction and lactation in felids has focused mainly on rare or endangered species and remains limited in the domestic cat (Felis catus). Using a non-invasive longitudinal approach, we measured faecal glucocorticoid, progesterone, and testosterone metabolites (fGCm, fPm, and fTm) in nine females before mating and during three months of lactation, examining associations with litter characteristics and kitten survival. Lactational concentrations were expressed relative to each female's median baseline, while baseline concentrations were analysed

Scanning electron microscopy of digestive tract parasites in jungle cat (Felis chaus).

Among the 10 native cats of Iran, the Felis chaus is considered as one of the largely unknown species. Despite the reports on jungle cats in southeast Iran, there is no comprehensive information about their parasitic diseases. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) provides a valuable tool for the study of these organisms. In October 2022, a 15-year-old male jungle cat (F. chaus) was examined for gastrointestinal parasites using SEM which revealed exact parasite structures such as the mouth, shape of the lips, teeth and their position, papillae, excretory pore, and amphids. SEM of the Taenia taeni

Parasitism of Nelore (Bos indicus) calf from northern Brazil by Ctenocephalides felis.

Ctenocephalides felis is the most common hematophagous ectoparasite of domestic cats and dogs worldwide, causing allergic dermatitis, anemia, itching, discomfort, and it is responsible for the transmission of many pathogens. In cattle, parasitism is not common but occurs due to the high adaptability of this flea species. This study aimed to report infestation of a Nellore (Bos indicus) calf from Northern Brazil by C. felis and its clinical findings. A 45 kg male calf presented diarrhea, progressive emaciation after 50 days of birth, and flea infestation. Anemia was observed (4.11 × 106/μL of e
