Nerve Transfers in the Management of Femoral Nerve Palsy: A Systematic Review.

The primary objective of this systematic review is to describe the effectiveness of nerve transfers for restoring quadriceps motor function in patients with femoral nerve palsy. MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched from their inception to June 2023 for any English language, primary literature investigating nerve transfers for femoral nerve palsy. Data were extracted for study and intervention characteristics, as well as clinical outcomes, including preoperative and postoperative knee extension strength, electrodiagnostic studies, functional outcomes, adverse events, and donor site morbid

Preoperative Ultrasound in Patients with Meralgia Paresthetica to Detect Anatomical Variations in the Course of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve.

OBJECTIVE: Sometimes during surgery for meralgia paresthetica, it can be difficult to find the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). The aims of this study were to study the prevalence of different anatomical variations in patients, compare preoperative ultrasound (US) data with intraoperative findings, and investigate the effect of type of anatomical variation on duration of surgery and success rate of localizing the LFCN. METHODS: Fifty-four consecutive patients with idiopathic meralgia paresthetica who underwent either a neurolysis or neurectomy procedure were included. All patients preo

Meralgia Paresthetica Caused by Melorheostosis Affecting the Ipsilateral Ilium: A Case Report.

CASE: A 51-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of pain in the right thigh. Radiography and computed tomography of the pelvis showed cortical hyperostosis of the right ilium. She was diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica (MP) caused by melorheostosis involving the right ilium. After 6 weeks of conservative management, an operation was performed for the persisting pain. At the 1-year follow-up, no findings of recurrence were observed clinically and radiographically. CONCLUSION: MP, caused by proximal irritation of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, can occur because of melorheostos

Arthroscopic treatment of femoral nerve paresthesia caused by an acetabular paralabral cyst.

This report describes a rare case of femoral nerve paresthesia caused by an acetabular paralabral cyst of the hip joint. A 68-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of right hip pain and paresthesia along the anterior thigh and radiating down to the anterior aspect of the knee. Radiography showed osteoarthritis with a narrowed joint space in the right hip joint. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cyst with low T1- and high T2-weighted signal intensity arising from a labral tear at the anterior aspect of the acetabulum. The cyst was connected to the joint space and displaced the femor

Iliopsoas hematoma presenting with sudden knee extensor weakness: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hematoma of the iliopsoas muscle is a rare condition. Prolonged pressure conditions due to hematoma of the femoral nerve can cause severe pain in the affected groin, hip, and thigh, and quadriceps weakness. We report a rare case of a spontaneous iliopsoas muscle hematoma that caused sudden femoral neuropathy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 71-year-old woman presented sudden left hip pain and knee extensor weakness. The pain was aggravated with left hip extension. She had a bilateral total hip replacement surgery due to avascular necrosis. She was diagnosed as mild stenosis of the cerebral art

Lower extremity nerve entrapments in athletes.

Nerve entrapments are a potential cause of lower extremity pain in athletes. Signs and symptoms suggestive of nerve entrapment include anesthesia, dysesthesias, paresthesias, or weakness in the distribution of a peripheral nerve. The physical examination may reveal an abnormal neurologic examination finding in the distribution of a peripheral nerve, positive nerve provocative testing, and positive Tinel sign over the area of entrapment. Electrodiagnostic studies, radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging studies, and sonographic evaluation may assist with the diagnosis of these disorders. Initia

MR neurography in diagnosing nondiabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy.

Here we describe the imaging findings in a 73-year-old woman who had pain in the right inguinal region, followed by progressive weakness of muscles innervated by the right femoral and obturator nerves, diagnosed as nondiabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy. Magnetic resonance neurography showed thickening and increase in signal intensity of the right femoral and obturator nerves.

Ischemic neuropathy and rhabdomyolysis as presenting symptoms of postpartum cardiomyopathy.

Rhabdomyolysis and peripheral neuropathy are two distinct disease entities which are rarely encountered in combination. We present a woman with rhabdomyolysis and peripheral neuropathy 3 weeks postpartum. Her symptoms were caused by bilateral femoral artery thrombosis due to postpartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). This demonstrates that PPCM may present with predominantly non-cardial symptoms and underscores the importance of rapidly recognizing this disorder.

Meralgia paraesthetica following open appendicectomy.

Meralgia paraesthetica is a painful condition attributed to entrapment or injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. It has been described following operations which could result in direct injury to the nerve such as iliac crest bone harvesting. It has also been reported following surgery remote from the nerve. Following open appendicectomy injury may occur following direct trauma to an anatomical variant of this nerve, which can occur in up to 25% of the population. We report two cases that became clinically evident immediately following open appendicectomy with subsequent confirmatory el

Laparoscopic-Assisted Intra-Abdominal Section of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve for Meralgia Paresthetica Following Anterior Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paresthetica, a pain syndrome that is caused by injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, is a well-documented complication after anterior hip arthroplasty (THA). Traditional treatment of this peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome can be complicated in patients who have had THA via an anterior approach owing to the presence of scar in the postoperative bed. CASE DESCRIPTION: In a 70-year-old man, we performed a novel laparoscopic-assisted intra-abdominal approach to treat meralgia paresthetica in the setting of previous anterior THA. CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive i

[Iliacus muscle injury caused by inadequate exercise].

BACKGROUND: Traumatic iliacus muscle injury is rare; it is usually caused by trauma or intense exercise involving the pelvic girdle; it can produce a hematoma with femoral nerve neuropathy. Spontaneous muscle hematomas occur in patients with coagulation disorders. CLINICAL CASE: A 45-year-old male with 18 days of evolution, with an intense pain in the right buttock, groin and iliac fossa, with an inability for hip flexion and ambulation caused by inadequate exercise (supine double leg lifts). On the physical examination: intense pain with bending and/or internal rotation of the right hip, pos

Lesion of the femoral nerve caused by a hydatid cyst of the right psoas muscle.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidosis is a human disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus. All organs in the human body may be affected by hydatid disease, but excluding liver and lungs, all other organs are considered as uncommon locations. Hydatid disease located in the psoas muscle is uncommon. CASE OUTLINE: The authors present a 36-year-old male living in endemic areas of Serbia, admitted due to pain and weakness of the right thigh and weight loss. Duration of symptoms was one year. CT and MRI revealed a big cystic mass (20 cm long) in the right psoas muscle. Neurological investig
