Computed tomographic and bronchoscopic diagnosis of Oslerus osleri infection in a dog.

A 16-month-old Sarplaninac Shepherd cross dog presented for a 1-month history of a productive cough that was unresponsive to an empirical 10-day course of cephalexin. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) showed multifocal, well-defined, smoothly marginated, soft tissue attenuating, minimally contrast enhancing nodular airway mural thickenings protruding into the airway lumen in the caudal trachea and principal bronchi. These nodules were also visualized on bronchoscopy, and cytology revealed parasitic larvae consistent with Oslerus osleri. The dog was treated with oral fenbendazole for 26 days. C

Generalized cutaneous urticaria associated with Giardia infection in a five-month old puppy.

Giardia cysts are commonly encountered in fecal examinations of dogs; intestinal infections can be asymptomatic or cause diarrhea but have not been previously associated with urticaria. A five-month old dalmatian puppy presented with a one-week history of cutaneous urticaria and pruritis. Wheals were most prominent on the head, abdomen, and inguinal region. A fecal flotation was performed to rule out internal parasites as a cause of hypersensitivity. Fecal float yielded many Giardia cysts, and treatment for giardiasis with fenbendazole was initiated. Urticaria improved drastically within a day

[The effect of Fenbion, an anthelmintic, on blood in heifers].

The complex effects of the anthelminthic Fenbion (prepared on the basis of fenbendazole, Bioveta Nitra) were investigated; its effects on the blood picture were studied in heifers with the liveweight of 400 kg, until the sixth day after its single application at doses of 15 and 30 mg per kg liveweight. The haemoglobin (Hb) content decreased in keeping with the physiological standard. The haematocrit (Hk) value decreased below the reference standard from 0.31 and 0.32 l per l on days five and six to 0.28-0.29 l per l. The total leucocyte counts increased from 8.60-9.64 G per l to 10.54-11.0 G p

Paragonimosis in a cat and the temporal progression of pulmonary radiographic lesions following treatment.

A 16 mo old cat presented with a 5 mo history of dyspnea, coughing, and gagging. Radiographic findings revealed seven nodules measuring 1-3 cm distributed multifocally in the lungs. Examination of feces revealed large numbers of eggs of Paragonimus kellicotti. Two fenbendazole treatment regimens (28 mg/kg per os q 12 hr for 21 days) and prednisone were required to eliminate the infection. Resolution of pulmonary nodules was monitored for 8 mo following successful treatment, and four lesions were still partially visible at 8 mo.

Pseudocapillaria tomentosa infections in laboratory larval and Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio): Development and advances in an in vivo anthelmintic drug discovery model.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are a widely used biomedical model and offers powerful high-throughput screening capabilities for assessing chemical bioactivity. We have previously employed adult zebrafish infected with the intestinal nematode Pseudocapillaria tomentosa to investigate nematode-microbiome interactions, nematode-promoted intestinal neoplasia, and anthelmintic drug discovery. Here we transition this model to a larval zebrafish infection infection to enable larger-scale experimentation and ultimately accelerate anthelmintic discovery. Infection conditions were optimized across 5-30 days p

Targeted selective treatment against gastrointestinal nematodes in goats under Mozambican conditions.

Gastrointestinal nematodes severely constrain goat production and farm resilience worldwide, particularly due to anthelmintic resistance. This study evaluated targeted selective (TST) and strategic treatment (ST) regimes on 16 Landim goat farms in Mozambique from June 2022 to November 2023, using the Five Point Check© to indicate nematode impacts and guide TST decisions. Six farm visits were conducted to apply ST (8 farms, 175 goats) or TST (8 farms, 186 goats) and obtain strongyle egg counts and animal weights. Treatment efficacy (fenbendazole 10 mg/kg bw; Panacur®) was evaluated at the start

Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) infection in zoo-housed arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus).

PURPOSE: Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) (Nematoda: Capillariidae) is a common endoparasite of free-ranging canids. In zoological gardens, reports on E. aerophilus-infections are scarce. We here present a case series of E. aerophilus infections in zoo-held arctic foxes with the aim to provide assistance for zoo veterinarians for future cases. METHODS: A total of five zoo-born and -housed arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were presented with coughing periods and strong phlegm, four of them showing rapid deteriorations at different time points including dyspnoea leading to death. Lung ultrasound findings and therapeutic outcome in a cat with recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax caused by paragonimiasis.

CASE SUMMARY: A 1-year-old intact female domestic shorthair cat presented for evaluation of worsening respiratory distress and tachypnoea. The cat had been diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax 4 days earlier by the primary clinician and treated with therapeutic thoracocentesis. On physical examination, the patient exhibited decreased lung sounds, tachypnoea and increased breathing effort. Recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax was confirmed via thoracic radiography, and therapeutic thoracocentesis was repeated. Lung ultrasound performed after thoracocentesis revealed lung consolidation, pulmona

Identification of Heterobilharzia americana infection in a dog residing in Indiana with no history of travel.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 1-year-old castrated male dog residing in Indiana was examined because of intermittent vomiting of 4 months' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog's condition did not resolve with medication. Diagnostic imaging revealed a possible partial obstruction at the ileocecal junction. An exploratory laparotomy was performed. The jejunum contained diffusely distributed, nodular, intramural lesions; 2 biopsy specimens were collected from representative lesions. The pancreas was grossly swollen, and pancreatitis was presumed present. No other abnormalities were observed in the abdomen

Cerebral and conjunctival haemorrhages associated with von Willebrand factor deficiency and canine angiostrongylosis.

A case of angiostrongylosis is described in a 14-month-old golden retriever bitch. Conjunctival haemorrhage and neurological signs, referable to a space-occupying cerebral lesion, were associated with defective primary haemostasis caused by low levels of von Willebrand factor. Full clinical recovery followed treatment with desmopressin, fresh whole blood transfusion, fenbendazole and supportive care. The magnetic resonance image of the suspected organising haematoma is described. Similarities to the human condition, acquired von Willebrand syndrome, and a possible role for aberrant larval migr

Massive Dracunculus insignis infection in a dog.

An 11-year-old 13-kg (28.6-lb) spayed female Cocker Spaniel was examined because of subcutaneous nodules on the hind limbs and ventral aspects of the thorax and abdomen. Focal areas of erythema and pyoderma were associated with the nodules, and purulent exudate could be expressed from a fistula in the nodules. A nematode approximately 20.5 cm in length was isolated from a draining fistula in 1 nodule and identified as Dracunculus insignis. The dog was treated with ivermectin, fenbendazole, and metronidazole, but the owner was still able to recover worms from multiple nodules for the next year.

Egg reappearance periods associated with anthelmintic treatments given to horses in winter and summer over two years.

Shortened egg reappearance periods (ERP) have been seen as an early warning of anthelmintic resistance development in cyathostomins in horses. The hypothesis has been that in these instances, efficacy against egg laying adult cyathostomins remains high, but a decline in activity against later larval stages leads to the earlier resumption of egg shedding after treatment. In this study using a single herd of horses we investigated the ERP of a number of commonly used equine anthelmintics and examined whether ERP might show seasonal variation between winter and summer. Four main Faecal egg count

Diagnosis and therapy of Capillaria plica infection: report and literature review.

Worldwide, data on Capillaria (Pearsonema) plica infections of the urinary tract in domestic carnivores are limited. Nevertheless, cystitis with hematuria, dysuria or pollakiuria may suggest a C. plica infection. A three-year old dog from Poland showing pollakiuria and hematuria was presented. At urine analysis, C. plica eggs were found in the urine sediment. The dog was unsuccessfully treated with a daily oral dose of fenbendazole 50 mg/kg BW for 5 days, while a single subcutaneous administration of ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg BW once effectively eliminated C. plica infection.

Pneumothorax in a persistent canine Angiostrongylus vasorum infection.

Canine angiostrongylosis is a gastropod-borne parasitosis caused by the cosmopolitan nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum. It is associated with cardiorespiratory disorders and eventually fatal coagulopathies. A 6-months-old female dog previously diagnosed with bronchopneumonia and pneumothorax, treated accordingly without success, was hospitalized for further treatment. Complementary diagnostics confirmed previous findings plus pneumomediastinum, thoracic exudate, leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, hypercoagulability, and hyperglobulinemia. Coprological analysis showed a severe patent A. vasorum infec

Schistosomiasis in the United States.

Canine schistosomiasis is a well-established cause of a granulomatous enteropathy and hepatopathy in dogs. In a small subset of patients, infection triggers significant hypercalcemia. Clinical signs and clinicopathologic findings are fairly nonspecific but ultrasonographic evidence of heterogenous small intestinal wall layering and pin-point hyperechoic foci in bowel, nodes, and liver is highly suggestive of infection. A sensitive, commercially available, fecal polymerase chain reaction test can be used to establish the diagnosis. Treatment protocols rely on praziquantel with fenbendazole. Mos

Three-year evaluation of anthelmintic treatment efficacy against equine strongyles in France using FECRT.

Reduced anthelmintic efficacy against strongyles in equids is a widespread concern, but up-to-date field data are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate, over a three-year period, the efficacy of the anthelmintic (AH) molecules available in France (fenbendazole, pyrantel, ivermectin and moxidectin) against strongyles in equids using faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs). A total of 104 complete FECRTs (i.e., required sample size reached) were conducted in 98 groups, involving 749 equids kept in 70 facilities. Fenbendazole-resistant populations were detected in 8/9 groups (89%) from

Consumption and effectiveness of anthelmintic-medicated block supplements for the treatment of trichostrongyle nematodes in a northern Great Plains Bison Herd.

In high numbers, trichostrongyle nematodes decrease productivity and cause health problems in ruminants including North American bison (Bison bison). Treatment strategies used to limit their impact in cattle are also being used by bison producers, including free-choice group-treatments either as the sole option or in combination with squeeze chute treatments. There have been no published studies evaluating the efficacy of free-choice anthelmintic strategies for bison under pasture conditions, and so the present study evaluated the effectiveness of fenbendazole-medicated multinutrient blocks us
