PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to explore the potential use of platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) in the treatment of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surgical defects were created bilaterally on the condylar fibrocartilage, hyaline cartilage, and bone to induce an osteoarthritic TMJ in rabbits. PRP was applied to the right joints of the rabbits (PRP group), and the left joints received physiologic saline (control group). After 4 weeks, the rabbits were sacrificed for histologic and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations. The data were an

Because the radioulnar ligament attaches to the ulnar fovea and base of the ulnar styloid, foveal detachment of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) induces severe distal radioulnar joint instability. This article describes both an arthroscopic and open repair technique to reattach the TFCC to the fovea. Both techniques reanchor the detached TFCC to the fovea. Both techniques are reliable and promising techniques in the repair of a foveal detachment of the TFCC.

PURPOSE: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) with its ulnar foveal attachment is the primary stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). The purpose of this study was to describe a technique for measuring the degree of subluxation of the DRUJ in wrist magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations to predict tears involving the foveal attachment of the TFCC.
METHODS: We measured DRUJ geometry in wrist MRI examinations of 34 patients who were found to have foveal TFCC tears at surgery. We compared the results with DRUJ geometry in 11 asymptomatic controls. Subluxation of the ulna

Fibrocartilage degeneration is the earliest pathologic finding in navicular disease but remains difficult to detect, even with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. We hypothesized that injection of the navicular bursa with saline would improve accuracy of MR imaging evaluation of palmar fibrocartilage. Thoracic limbs were collected from 11 horses within 6 h of death. Imaging was performed with a 1.5 T magnet using sagittal 2D proton density and transverse 3D FLASH sequences with fat saturation. For the purpose of determining sensitivity and specificity of the MR images, fibrocartilage was classifi

BACKGROUND: It has been previously shown that injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex increases the moment arm of the extensor carpi ulnaris. This will reduce the force producing capacity of the muscle in some situations, but will also increase its mechanical advantage. It is also possible that the change in the tendon path may increase tendon friction, predisposing the patient to future repetitive motion injury. It is the purpose of this study to determine the effects of triangular fibrocartilage complex injury on extensor carpi ulnaris moment producing capacity and tendon friction.

Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) insertion into the fovea of the distal ulna plays a crucial role in stabilizing the distal radioulnar joint. Consequently, surgical reattachment against avulsion of the foveal TFCC insertion is required to stabilize the distal radioulnar joint. However, because of technical difficulties, no arthroscopic procedure for such a lesion has currently been established. We present a new technique for arthroscopic reattachment of the avulsed TFCC into the fovea. An osseous tunnel 2.9 mm in diameter is created from the ulnar neck to the foveal surface. Under arth

We report two extremely rare cases of dorsal radial avulsion injury of the triangular fibrocartilage complex accompanied by an avulsion fracture of the sigmoid notch of the radius. Anatomical reduction of the bone fragment in conjunction with reattachment of the dorsal portion of the radioulnar ligament to the radial sigmoid notch were necessary to restore stability of the distal radioulnar joint and tension of the triangular fibrocartilage proper.

Whilst osseous coalitions of the lunate and the triquetrum are known to be asymptomatic, fibrocartilage lunate-triquetral coalitions can present an uncommon cause for ulnar-sided wrist pain. To diagnose this condition a high degree of suspicion is needed. We present a case with painful post-traumatic disruption of a fibrocartilage lunate-triquetral coalition that was primary misdiagnosed to be a disruption of the interosseous lunotriquetral ligament and was initially treated arthroscopically. Persistent symptoms lead to X-ray examination of the opposite wrist, revealing a complete osseous luna

A multicenter study to assess arthroscopic reconstruction of the peripheral attachment of the triangular fibrocartilage complex was undertaken. A total of 44 patients (45 wrists) from three institutions were reviewed. Twenty-seven of the 45 wrists had associated injuries, including distal radius fracture (4), partial or complete rupture of the scapholunate (7), lunotriquetral (9), ulnocarpal (2), or radiocarpal (2) ligaments. There were two fractured ulnar styloids and one scapholunate accelerated collapse (SLAC) wrist deformity. The peripheral tears were repaired using a zone-specific repair

Unilateral cast occlusal splints were fitted to the mandibular posterior teeth of adult rabbits, for periods of 1-28 days. The reactivity of the mandibular disc was examined by the effect on cell proliferation across the anterior, intermediate and posterior discal bands, as measured by metaphase arrest using vincristine sulphate. The effect on the disc was to activate cell proliferation on the splinted side. Intensity of response varied according to the length of time after fitting the splint, and the site involved. The findings suggested that the adult mandibular disc may participate in compe

Arthroscopic findings in 11 patients with chronic ulnar painful wrist were compared both with arthrographic and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging results to evaluate the accuracy of the former procedure in the detection of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) lesions. MR imaging and arthrography investigations appeared to be sensitive modalities when compared with arthroscopic findings in TFCC lesions (specificity 100%; sensitivity 82 and 80%). MR imaging can be advantageously employed in the screening of patients suspected of having a TFCC tear, eliminating the necessity of an arthrographic

Background: Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) disruption and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) instability are common concomitant injuries. This study presents outcomes of simultaneous open TFCC repairs with ECU stabilisation. Methods: This retrospective cohort study reviewed patients with symptomatic distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ) instability and ECU subluxation who underwent simultaneous open repair of the TFCC and ECU stabilisation between 2014 and 2016. Patients were diagnosed clinically, and TFCC tear and ECU subluxation were confirmed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultraso

BACKGROUND: Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries commonly manifest as ulnar-sided wrist pain and can be associated with distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability and subsequent wrist functional decline. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of MRI compared to wrist arthroscopy in identifying traumatic TFCC injuries and to determine the distribution of different TFCC injury subtypes in a normal clinical setting.
METHODS: The data of 193 patients who underwent both preoperative wrist MRI and wrist arthroscopy were retrospectively reviewed. The analysis focused on the pro

The ulnocarpal ligament complex (UCLC), consisting of the ulnotriquetral, ulnolunate, and ulnocapitate ligaments, plays a pivotal role in maintaining ulnocarpal joint stability and is closely linked to the palmar radioulnar ligament (PRUL), preventing dorsal ulnar translation. Often, tears in the PRUL and UCLC coincide with lunotriquetral interosseous ligament (LTIL) tears as the result of their strong anatomical connections. Biomechanical studies have demonstrated that ulnar-shortening osteotomy enhances stability in the distal radioulnar joint, lunotriquetral joint, and UCLC by tightening th

INTRODUCTION: wrist ligament injuries and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) lesions are common but often underdiagnosed conditions causing chronic wrist pain. The diagnostic challenge necessitates a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies, and arthroscopy, considered the gold standard. Ligament injuries, particularly scapholunate ligament (SL), and TFCC lesions account for significant wrist instability and ulnar-sided wrist pain, respectively.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: this retrospective observational study, conducted at Hospital Ángeles Pedregal, Mexico City, aimed to assess

Background Few studies have reported the clinical results of arthroscopic debridement and thermal shrinkage for partial lunotriquetral (LT) ligament injury. Purpose We estimated the outcomes of arthroscopic thermal shrinkage of a traumatic LT ligament incomplete tear without triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) perforation. Methods We evaluated the results of 24 patients. The mean follow-up was 16 months. Radiographs were examined for ulnar variance (UV) and radioulnar distance on a true lateral radiograph, and wrist function was assessed based on grip strength, Mayo wrist score, and Di

Ulnocarpal impaction or ulnar abutment symptom occurs secondary to abnormal load bearing on the ulnar side of the wrist leading to pain symptoms and degeneration of the structures of the ulnocarpal joint. The two classical surgical methods used to address this problem are ulnar shortening osteotomy and the wafer procedure, which can either be open or arthroscopic. With the advent of arthroscopy, with surgeon harboring arthroscopy skills, arthroscopic wafer resection has been intensely popularized which requires a central perforation of the triangular fibrocartilage to approach the ulna dome th

BACKGROUND: Ulnar-sided wrist pain might be caused by a lesion of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). Patients with TFCC lesion may show an instability of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). Before arthroscopic assessment, conservative therapy using a brace or splint may result in alleviation of symptoms. The results of our previous study showed that patients with a traumatic TFCC lesion and instability of the DRUJ had the smallest weight-bearing capacity and had the largest increase in application of the wrist brace (WristWidget).
PURPOSE: In this prospective study, we wanted to te

INTRODUCTION: Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries are associated with distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability and impaired wrist proprioception. Sensorimotor training of extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) and pronator quadratus (PQ) can enhance DRUJ stability. With limited evidence on effectiveness of TFCC sensorimotor rehabilitation, this study aimed to evaluate the effects and feasibility of a novel wrist sensorimotor rehabilitation program (WSRP) for TFCC injuries.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with TFCC injuries were recruited from May 2018 to January 2020 at an outpatient hand c
