Dirofilaria from the index finger of a man in Costa Rica.

A 4.5-cm male Dirofilaria indistinguishable from D. immitis was removed from the tip of the index finger of an 18-year-old farmer in Costa Rica. The case is reminiscent of a report of a larger (9-cm) but otherwise similar Dirofilaria, identified as D. spectans, a heartworm of otters, causing Raynaud's syndrome by occluding an artery of the fifth finger of a farm woman in Brazil. As in the present case, the worm was removed from a painful papule on the volar surface at the extreme tip of the affected finger.

Evidence that sulfisoxazole, an antibacterial sulfonamide, can adversely affect the development of Brugia pahangi in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

The average number of infective larvae recovered from Brugia pahangi-infected Aedes aegypti was approximately one-half that recovered from the controls after the former group of infected mosquitoes had ingested a 1.0% solution of sulfisoxazole diolamine (SXZ) in 10% sucrose-water for 4 consecutive days, beginning 4 days after infection. Most of the filarial larvae from the SXZ-treated mosquitoes were small and sluggish compared with those from the controls. There was no increased mortality of mosquitoes that ingested 1.0% SXZ in sugar-water for 4 days. Average filarial larval burdens were not

Rapid decrease of precipitating and reaginic antibodies in Dirofilaria immitis-infected dogs which develop severe adverse reactions following treatment with diethylcarbamazine.

Dirofilaria immitis-infected dogs were treated with diethylcarbamazine. Measurement of the level of IgG precipitating antibody was carried out by counterimmunoelectrophoresis and that of IgE by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in pre-treatment and post-treatment serum samples. In dogs showing severe to moderate adverse reactions to the drug there were pronounced decreases of both antibodies to a "metabolic" antigen prepared from the medium in which adult female worms had been incubated. These antibody levels did not decline in non-reacting dogs. Precipitating antibody levels to somatic antigens e

Chemotherapeutic reactions of Chandlerella hawkingi, the filarial parasite of the Indian jungle crow, Corvus macrorhynchos (Agler).

1. A high percentage of Indian jungle crows (Corvus macrorhynchos Wagler), found in and around Lucknow, harbour a natural filarial infection Chandlerella hawkingi. The microfilariae of this species are sheathed and show nocturnal periodicity.2. Fourteen compounds active against other kinds of filariae, especially against Litomosoides carinii, were tested against Ch. hawkingi in jungle crows to find whether this infection would be suitable for routine filarial chemotherapy. This is apparently the first report of systematic screening of antifilarial compounds against an avian filariasis.3. Tarta

Molecular identification of nematode larvae different from those of the Trichinella genus detected by muscle digestion.

Although larvae of the genus Trichinella are the most common parasite species detected in vertebrate muscles using artificial digestion, nematode larvae belonging to other genera are sometimes detected and incorrectly identified as Trichinella. However, it is often very difficult to identify these larvae at the species, genus or family level using microscopy because of the absence of specific morphological characters or cuticle damage, and the only means of identification is PCR and sequencing of specific molecular markers (12S mtDNA; COI; 18S rDNA; and ITS1). From 2008 to 2011, 18 nematode is

Allergic dermatitis by Dirofilaria repens in a dog: clinical picture and treatment.

Adult stages of Dirofilaria repens (Nematoda, Filarioidea) reside in the subcutaneous tissues of the definitive or occasional host as dogs, other animals, and humans, and it is transmitted by mosquitoes. Canine infections with adults and circulating larvae of D. repens are often considered asymptomatic, although in some cases, the parasite causes subcutaneous nodules, diffused dermatitis, skin lesions, and itching. This report provides a complete clinical description of an unusual case of allergic diffused dermatitis caused by D. repens in a naturally infected dog and its successful treatment

Filariasis: nutritional interactions in human and animal hosts.

Vector-borne nematodes of the Order Filarioidea produce chronic, debilitating human infections which are usually nonfatal but are associated with a high degree of severe morbidity. Weight loss often accompanies infection and is probably a consequence of the increased energy cost associated with filarial fever, lymphangitis and lymphadenitis. In onchocerciasis, weight loss is associated with heavy worm loads as assessed by abundant nodules and large numbers of skin microfilariae. Experimental infections using rodent filariae have confirmed these observations and have also shown that low protein

Host, vector, and parasite dynamics: exploring intrinsic and extrinsic factors shaping tick-borne filarial nematode transmission.

Tick-borne filarial nematodes are a complex and understudied group of parasites that rely on ticks for transmission in vertebrates. This review examines how intrinsic and extrinsic factors may influence the successful transmission of filarial nematodes in tick vectors, drawing insights from extensively studied haematophagous dipteran vector systems. We explore how different tick life stages contribute to potential nematode transmission to the host and the influence of abiotic factors on nematode survival and development within ticks. Understanding nematode life stage periodicity and enhancemen

Diethylcarbamazine: A review of its modes of action.

Filariases are neglected tropical diseases caused by Clade III parasitic nematodes transmitted by biting insects as microfilaria which mature into female and male adults in the host. One example of filariasis is lymphatic filariasis or elephantiasis, caused by three species of filaria: Brugia malayi, Wuchereria bancrofti, and/or Brugia timori. Elephantiasis results from the occlusion of lymphatic vessels by adult parasites and subsequent swelling of the limbs. It is a disfiguring disease that occurs in 120 million people worldwide. Another filarial disease is onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerc

Detection of Cercopithifilaria bainae in western Romania.

Cercopithifilaria species are tick-transmitted filarial parasites of mammals. In Europe, three Cercopithifilaria spp. are known to parasitize dogs, all occurring mainly in the Mediterranean countries. In Romania, Cercopithifilaria bainae has been reported in a single dog in eastern Romania but the occurrence in other parts of the country is not known. To further elucidate the geographic distribution of Cercopithifilaria spp. infection, 544 ticks were collected from dogs in several locations across Romania. The presence of Cercopithifilaria spp. was investigated with real-time PCR. A single Der

Oslerus osleri (metastrongyloidea; filaroididae) in gray wolves (Canis lupus) from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Oslerus osleri is a filaroid parasite of the respiratory tract of canids. In North America, it is most commonly reported from coyotes (Canis latrans) and domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), but reports in gray wolves (Canis lupus) are infrequent. We report a new geographic record for O. osleri in four gray wolves from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Adult nematodes found in nodules in the submucosa of the trachea and bronchi were identified as O. osleri based on morphometry of spicules of males. We sequenced two segments of the genome of adult nematodes: a 1,111-base pair (bp) segmen

Human intraocular filariasis caused by Pelecitus sp. nematode, Brazil.

A male nematode was extracted from iris fibers of a man from the Brazilian Amazon region. This nematode belonged to the genus Pelecitus but was distinct from the 16 known species in this genus. Similarities with Pelecitus spp. from neotropical birds suggested an avian origin for this species.

Mosquito host influences on development of filariae.

A brief review is presented of the literature relating to factors which limit the capacity of filariae to develop in mosquitoes, with particular emphasis on immune mechanisms. Most insects respond to bacterial infection by the production of potent antibacterial proteins, but little is known of this aspect of the immune response in mosquitoes or of the possible influence of immune proteins on the fate of filarial infections in mosquitoes. A summary account is given of recent experiments with the mosquito Aedes aegypti which involve passive transfer of immune haemolymph together with its in vitr

In vitro release of biologically active materials from the bovine filarial parasite Setaria digitata.

Release of macromolecules by S. digitata, in 9 different media under in vitro condition have been studied. A direct relationship between microfilariae (mf) release and associated folin positive materials was seen in majority of the cases. High activities of hydrolytic enzymes such as protease, collagenase, alkaline phosphatase and lipase were detected in the excretary-secretary products and worm preparations. Activity of collagenase could not be detected in the male worm under experimental conditions.
