Financial Toxicity and Multidimensional Economic Strain Among Dementia Caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Financial toxicity is an underrecognized but significant burden among caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The interaction between economic hardship, caregiver burden, and social determinants of health (SDOH) remains poorly defined. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 79 ADRD caregivers recruited through the University of Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Participants completed the COST measure, Zarit Burden, Resource Utilization in dementia questionnaire, and an SDOH assessment. The primary outcome was moderate

Midwifery student attrition in Australia: A scoping review.

PROBLEM: Global literature suggests that attrition rates from entry-to-practice midwifery programs are increasing. However, little is known about student attrition in the Australian context. BACKGROUND: Australia faces a growing midwifery shortage, prompting calls to increase program enrolments. Evidence from the United Kingdom shows high and rising attrition in entry-to-practice programs. In Australia, the scale of midwifery student attrition and the factors influencing it remain largely underexplored. AIM: To identify and synthesise existing Australian literature on factors influencing mid

Broken Bonds, Lonely Hearts? A Mediation Analysis of Childhood Adversity, Relationship Quality, and Loneliness in Later Life.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs, including child maltreatment, financial hardship, and household dysfunction) and later-life loneliness was mediated by quality of social relationships. METHODS: Data came from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 11,700). Five path models were tested: four individual relationship types (spouse, children, relatives, and friends) and one combining all relationship types. RESULTS: In the spouse model, child maltreatment and financial hardship increased loneliness via lower support and higher strain; ho

Financial hardship screening among Native American patients with cancer: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related financial hardship is an increasingly recognized concern for patients, families, and caregivers. Many Native American (NA) patients are at increased risk for cancer-related financial hardship due to high prevalence of low income, medical comorbidity, and lack of private health insurance. However, financial hardship screening (FHS) implementation for NA patients with cancer has not been reported. The objective of this study is to explore facilitators and barriers to FHS implementation for NA patients. METHODS: We conducted key informant interviews with NA patients wi

Persistent Financial Burdens and High Donor Satisfaction Among Living Liver Donors: A 24-y Single-center Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior investigations on living donor hepatectomy have primarily focused on medical and psychosocial outcomes, with limited evaluation of financial implications. Financial support systems exist, but these are limited by strict income criteria, leaving some donors ineligible. This study sought to characterize donor-reported quality of life with a focus on postdonation financial burden. METHODS: Over a 24-y period, 402 living donor hepatectomies were performed at a single institution. In 2024, donors were contacted by telephone and surveyed regarding their postdonation experiences, w

"Associations between maternal perceptions of social support and adolescent weight status: A longitudinal analysis".

Social support is a well-established predictor of improved physical health outcomes among adults. Establishing whether maternal social support may have an inter-generational positive impact on their child's physical health will provide important information for developing potential interventions and policies. Elevated body mass index (BMI) is one indicator of child health that is linked to increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other morbidities later in life. There is some evidence that maternal social support is associated with improved child and adolescent weight status; however, no

Financial hardship in cancer family caregivers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of adults diagnosed with cancer usually face significant financial hardship due to employment disruptions and the cost of cancer-related expenses. This leads to physical, emotional, and psychological burden on them. However, despite this important contribution, family caregivers are rarely recognized as major stakeholders in palliative and supportive care during the caregiving trajectory. PURPOSE: To address these gaps and inform palliative care practice, policy, and future research, we conducted a scoping review to synthesize and critically evaluate the current

Financial factors shaping treatment decisions in oncology: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: The rising cost of cancer care has made financial considerations increasingly prominent in oncology practice. Although patient financial toxicity is well studied, how cost-related factors influence physician treatment decision-making is less clearly understood. This systematic review evaluates how various financial factors shape prescribing and treatment decisions in oncology. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Eligible studies evaluated associations between financial exposures (e.g., drug pricing, reimbursement,

Coordinated clinical and financial analysis as a powerful tool to influence vendor pricing.

BACKGROUND: As costs continue to outpace reimbursements, hospital administrators and clinicians face increasing pressure to justify new capital purchases. Massachusetts Health Care Reform has added further economic challenges for Disproportionate Share Hospitals (DSH), as resources formerly available to treat the uninsured have been redirected. In this challenging climate, many hospitals still lack a standardized process for technology planning and/or vendor negotiation. PURPOSE: : The purpose of this study was to determine whether a simple, coordinated clinical and financial analysis of a te

Maintenance payments for child support in southern Africa: using law to promote family planning.

This article presents some of the legal, social, cultural, and practical constraints facing women who attempt to enforce their right to maintenance (child support) payments in southern Africa. It is based on research by the Women and Law in Southern Africa Trust, a network of women who research women's legal rights in six countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Statutes in all countries in the region provide that a man must support his legitimate and illegitimate children; there are, however, weaknesses in the laws on the books. The social and cultural constr
