Dimeric bisbenzimidazole DB(5) fluorescing in the blue spectral area (lambda(em) 476 nm) within the DNA complex was synthesized. DB(5) is bound by a double-strand DNA and can differentially stain human and plant (flax) chromosomes. According to preliminary data, it provides considerably more intensely contrasting chromosome staining than DAPI and Hoechst 33258 dyes. BACKGROUND: Flax (Linum usitatissimum) seeds are increasingly used in bread and as laxatives. Hypersensitivity to linseeds has been infrequently described, and we report a case of anaphylaxis induced by linseed ingestion in a 39-year-old woman.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The clinical course, as well as positive skin prick tests and histamine release tests performed with linseed extracts, suggested a type I hypersensitivity as the underlying cause for the patient's multisystemic involvement. The presence of linum-specific IgE in her serum was confirmed by immunoCAP assay.

This research assessed the influence of fermentation and germination as well as of particle size on lignan bioaccessibility from flaxseed by simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. In vitro simulated colonic fermentation was used to study lignan release and its conversion into enterolignans. RATIONALE: Anaphylaxis is a serious, generalized allergic reaction typically triggered by drugs, food, and bee venom, which can be life-threatening. Seeds are one of the major food allergens and can cause anaphylaxis as well as systemic hypersensitivity reactions. Flaxseed has been widely used crop for numerous purposes, such as in alternative medicine and as a dietary supplement, hypersensitivity to it has rarely been reported.

A total of 224 workers and employees engaged at the Smolensk flax spinning plant, suffering from acute respiratory diseases, were examined on an outpatient basis. Virus etiology of the diseases was established in 84 patients (37.7%) with the aid of the serological tests (HI and CF) and immunofluorescent techniques.
