Evaluation of a biobased polycarbonate interpenetrated network in a dental resin composite.

Silanization of filler particles in a dental resin composite is achieved by the formation of Si-O-Si bonds, however, these bonds are especially vulnerable to hydrolysis because this covalent bond has a significant ionic character due to the electronegativity differences between the atoms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of an interpenetrated network (IPN) as alternative of silanization reaction and to assess its effect in selected properties of experimental photopolymerizable resin composites. The interpenetrate network was obtained during the photopolymerization reaction o

Fatigue behaviour of a self-healing dental composite.

OBJECTIVE: Novel self-healing resin-based composites containing microcapsules have been developed to improve the mechanical performance of dental restorations. However, the long-term fatigue behaviour of these self-healing composites has still been hardly investigated. Therefore, this manuscript studied the fatigue behaviour of self-healing composites containing microcapsules by subjecting the specimens to traditional staircase tests and ageing in a custom-designed chewing simulator (Rub&Roll) to simulate oral ageing physiologically relevant conditions. METHODS: To prepare self-healing compos

Influence of Hypochlorous Acid Obtained From an Electrolytic Device on the Mechanical Properties of Root Dentin.

OBJECTIVES: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) exhibits antimicrobial activity. However, it is associated with negative effects in endodontics, such as cytotoxicity and alterations in the mechanical properties of root dentin, leading to the search for new alternatives. Hypochlorous acid (HClO) exhibits antimicrobial activity and low cytotoxicity as irrigation solution. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of HClO on the mechanical properties of root dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples were obtained from 120 mandibular bovine incisors, which were distributed into four expe

Reproducibility in Studies on Dental Restorative Materials: A Critical Review.

The evaluation of dental restorative composites relies largely on laboratory studies performed under controlled conditions using standardized testing protocols. However, despite the apparent simplicity and standardization of many commonly used methods, published studies often report surprisingly heterogeneous results. This critical review examines the issue of reproducibility through three representative laboratory tests that differ in their apparent methodological complexity: bond strength, degree of conversion, and flexural strength. Bond strength testing is well recognized for its limited r

Effects of Solvent Debinding on the Microstructure and Properties of 3D-Printed Alumina Ceramics.

Solvents assist in the debinding of stereolithography-based 3D-printed alumina green bodies. The green bodies subsequently undergo thermal debinding and sintering to obtain alumina ceramics. In this study, several solvents were tested, including polyethylene glycol, oxalic acid, ammonium hydroxide, ethyl alcohol, methyl methacrylate, butyl acetate, dimethyl carbonate, methanol, ethyl acetate, and sec-butyl alcohol. The tested solvents during the debinding process showed different effects on microstructure and properties of 3D-printed alumina ceramics due to the variable aspects of their solubi

The effect of quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles on bacterial adherence, cytotoxicity, and physical and mechanical properties of experimental dental composites.

A significant problem related to the functioning of resin-based composites for dental fillings is secondary or recurrent caries, which is the reason for the need for repeated treatment. The cross-linked quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles (QA-PEI-NPs) have been shown to be a promising antibacterial agent against different bacteria, including cariogenic ones. However, little is known about the properties of dental dimethacrylate polymer-based composites enriched with QA-PEI-NPs. This research was carried out on experimental composites based on bis-GMA/UDMA/TEGDMA matrix enriched

Novel guaiacol-based high-performance dimethacrylate containing fluorenyl cardo structure for dental restorative resins.

In dentistry, the use of bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) is being questioned since bisphenol A is regarded as an endocrine disruptor. As alternative candidates to Bis-GMA, bio-based dental resins face the crucial challenge of low mechanical strength and high water sorption. In this study, a novel guaiacol-based dimethacrylate containing fluorenyl cardo-structure was developed to effectively improve the hydrophobicity, enhance the mechanical properties, and reduce the polymerization shrinkage of bio-based dental restorative resins. Therefore, 9, 9-bis(3-methoxy-4-glycerolate methacr
