The non-native wood-boring and symbiotic fungus-culturing Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) was first reported in New York apple orchards in 2013. Trapping surveys have been conducted annually since to assist growers in timely applications of preventative control measures. In 2021, a similar-looking introduced species, Anisandrus maiche (Kurentsov), was identified in traps in west central New York. Anisandrus maiche was first recorded in 2005 in Pennsylvania but its history in New York was unclear due to potential misidentification. We collected and identified ambrosia beetles using ethanol-bai

Birds commonly exploit environmental features such as columns of rising air and vertical windspeed gradients to lower the cost of flight. These environmental subsidies may be especially important for birds that forage via continuous flight, as seen in black skimmers. These birds forage through a unique behavior, called skimming, where they fly above the water surface with their mandible lowered into the water, catching fish on contact. Thus, their foraging flight incurs costs of moving through both air and water. Prior studies of black skimmer flight behavior have focused on reductions in flig

Insects and vertebrates have multiple major physiological systems, each species having a circulatory system, a metabolic system, and a respiratory system that enable locomotion and survival in stressful environments, among other functions. Broadening our understanding of the physiology of Drosophila melanogaster requires the parsing of interrelationships among such major component physiological systems. By combining electrical pacing and flight exhaustion assays with manipulative conditioning, we have started to unpack the interrelationships between cardiac function, locomotor performance, and

Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are the main vectors of human and animal trypanosomoses in West Africa. In some parts of their distribution area, they co-exist in sympatry, but little is known about their interactions. This study aimed to explore their respective flight height and daily activity when co-existing or alone. Attractive targets were used, made of a black/blue/black cloth covered with adhesive film, so that all tsetse that landed were caught. The study was conducted in two areas in South Burkina Faso: Kartasso, upstream the Mouhoun river, where G. p. gambiensis is t

Flight is a crucial activity for winged insects, involving diverse behaviours, and wing morphology has often been proposed as a key factor influencing flight capacity. Traits such as wing loading, wing:ratio, and wing aspect ratio have been suggested as targets of natural selection, exhibiting environmental and genetic variability. Here, we evaluate the relationship between morphological traits and two aspects of flight performance: flight duration (PTF) and its robustness (CVPTF) in Drosophila melanogaster. Additionally, we investigate the genetic basis of PTF and CVPTF. Our findings highligh

Climate warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, yet the lasting effects of short, extreme thermal events during development on pollinators remain poorly understood. Early life heat stress may generate persistent carry-over effects that influence adult morphology and performance, with consequences for fitness and ecosystem functioning. We experimentally tested how moderate and extreme developmental heatwaves affect adult morphology and flight performance in the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis), a key pollinator across its broad distribution and a model species for solitary

Flapping wing insects leverage the dynamics of their compliant flight systems to reduce the energetic costs of flying. However, the extent to which the wing hinge dynamics contribute to the overall system dynamics remains unknown. Therefore, we developed an approach to (i) quantify the passive dynamic properties of the wing hinge and (ii) identify the resonant frequency of the isolated wing/wing hinge system. First, we measured the frequency response relating thorax deformation to wing stroke angle in sacrificed honeybees and army cutworm moths. Using these data, we developed a linear model of

Long-distance migration, common in passerine birds, is rare and poorly studied in bats. Piloting a 1.2-gram IoT (Internet of Things) tag with onboard processing, we tracked the daily location, temperature, and activity of female common noctules (Nyctalus noctula) during spring migration across central Europe up to 1116 kilometers. Over 3 years, 71 bats migrated tens to hundreds of kilometers per night, predominantly with incoming warm fronts, which provided them with wind support. Bats also showed unexpected flexibility in their ability to migrate across a wide range of conditions if needed. H

In many insect species, the thoracic exoskeletal structure plays a crucial role in enabling flight. In the dipteran indirect flight mechanism, thoracic cuticle acts as a transmission link between the flight muscles and the wings, and is thought to act as an elastic modulator: improving flight motor efficiency thorough linear or nonlinear resonance. But peering closely into the drivetrain of tiny insects is experimentally difficult, and the nature of this elastic modulation is unclear. Here, we present a new inverse-problem methodology to surmount this difficulty. In a data synthesis process, w

Muscles act through elastic and dissipative elements to mediate movement, which can introduce dissipation and filtering which are important for energetics and control. The high power requirements of flapping flight can be reduced by an insect's exoskeleton, which acts as a spring with frequency-independent material properties under purely sinusoidal deformation. However, this purely sinusoidal dynamic regime does not encompass the asymmetric wing strokes of many insects or non-periodic deformations induced by external perturbations. As such, it remains unknown whether a frequency-independent m

Based on previous investigations, adult Australian plague locusts are believed to migrate on warm nights (with evening temperatures >25 °C), provided daytime flight is suppressed by surface winds greater than the locusts' flight speed, which has been shown to be 3.1 m s-1. Moreover, adult locusts are believed to undertake briefer 'dispersal' flights on nights with evening temperature >20 °C. To reassess the utility of these conditions for forecasting locust flight, contingency tests were conducted comparing the nights selected on these bases (predicted nights) for the months of November, Janua

The magnetic field, the sun, the stars and the polarization pattern of visible light during twilight are important cues for orientation in nocturnally migrating songbirds. As these cues change with time and location on Earth, the polarization pattern was put forward as a likely key reference system calibrating the other compass systems. Whether this applies generally to migratory birds is, however, controversially discussed. We used an experimental approach in free-flying birds to study the role of polarization for their departure direction in autumn. Experimental birds experienced a 90 deg sh

Animal venoms are small natural mixtures highly enriched in bioactive components. They are known to target at least two important pharmacological classes of cell surface receptors: ion channels and G protein coupled receptors. Since sperm cells express a wide variety of ion channels and membrane receptors, required for the control of cell motility and acrosome reaction, two functions that are defective in infertility issues, animal venoms should contain interesting compounds capable of modulating these two essential physiological functions. Herein, we screened for bioactive compounds from the

Bergeyella zoohelcum causes rare but severe human clinical diseases, which mostly arise from animal bites. Notably, Bergeyella infections can also occur in older people after prolonged exposure to dogs or cats without biting. We detected B. zoohelcum in oral cavities of therapy dogs in close contact with older people residing in nursing homes. Twenty-two bacterial isolates were identified as B. zoohelcum by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results showed that MALDI-TOF MS is an effective tool for

All life forms have evolved under the constant force of gravity on Earth and developed ways to counterbalance acceleration load. In space, shear forces, buoyance-driven convection, and hydrostatic pressure are nullified or strongly reduced. When subjected to microgravity in space, the equilibrium between cell architecture and the external force is disturbed, resulting in changes at the cellular and sub-cellular levels (e.g., cytoskeleton, signal transduction, membrane permeability, etc.). Cosmic radiation also poses great health risks to astronauts because it has high linear energy transfer va

The smallest flying vertebrate pollinators, including hummingbirds and nectar bats, exist at an energetic extreme. Nectarivores must balance the need for high rates of metabolic power output to sustain comparatively high costs of thermoregulation and the intense energetic demands of forward and hovering flight with the constraint against building and carrying large, heavy energy stores. Work over the past half century has quantified metabolic rate and daily energy requirements for these animals and revealed that hummingbirds and nectar bats achieve energy homeostasis through exceptional physio

The ways in which seabirds navigate over very large spatial scales remain poorly understood. While olfactory and visual information can provide guidance over short distances, their range is often limited to 100s km, far below the navigational capacity of wide-ranging animals such as albatrosses. Infrasound is a form of low-frequency sound that propagates for 1,000s km in the atmosphere. In marine habitats, its association with storms and ocean surface waves could in effect make it a useful cue for anticipating environmental conditions that favor or hinder flight or be associated with profitabl

The discovery of feathered dinosaurs revolutionized the studies on the origin of birds and the evolution of their flight. Among paravians (birds and their closest relatives), the microraptorine dromaeosaurids are unique in bearing several flight-related adaptations with a controversial evolutionary interpretation, supporting, alternatively, flight as ancestral to Paraves or having evolved multiple times among the latter. Here, we introduce an exquisitely-preserved member of Microraptorinae, Norellraptor barsboldi gen. et sp. nov., and describe in detail forelimb osteohistological features for

Smoke from biomass burning significantly degrades air quality due to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5) and trace gases. While the ecological and health impacts of smoke pollution are well documented, its effects on insect migration remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted two experiments to investigate the flight performance of Vanessa cardui butterflies under varying smoke conditions and identify the mechanisms influencing their behaviour. Butterflies were tethered to flight mills (TFMs) for 6 h, during which flight speed, distance, and duration were recorded acro

The evolution of flight is a rare event in vertebrate history, and one that demands functional integration across multiple anatomical/physiological systems. The neuroanatomical basis for such integration and the role that brain evolution assumes in behavioural transformations remain poorly understood. We make progress by (i) generating a positron emission tomography (PET)-based map of brain activity for pigeons during rest and flight, (ii) using these maps in a functional analysis of the brain during flight, and (iii) interpreting these data within a macroevolutionary context shaped by non-avi
