Fluid from an apical periodontal and a follicular jaw cyst formed, in double diffusion in agarose gel, a continuous precipitin line against IgA isolated from human and rabbit serum, IgA myeloma protein, and secretory IgA. Results of immunoelectrophoresis and absorption experiments indicated that the IgA precipitating factor was an immunoglobulin belonging to the IgM class. Pilar cysts are common benign cysts of follicular origin that typically arise in areas of skin containing dense hair follicles such as the scalp. Here we describe a unique case of a young woman who was found to have a pilar cyst on the dorsum of her hand, a rather atypical location given the relative lack of pilosebaceous units. This case illustrates the variability in pilar cyst presentation and the importance of considering a pilar cyst in the differential diagnosis of a patient presenting with a tumor of the dorsal hand.

We report a case of a giant cystic cutaneous adnexal hamartoma which showed fibrofollicular units embedded in the stroma with aberrant fat tissue. There were many sebaceous lobules in the fibrofollicular units, and its histologic features were consistent with conventional folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma. Given the unique clinical history and appearance, this lesion is considered to be a congenital variant.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of impacted or embedded third molars accounts for approximately 98%. Since 1948, there are studies reporting pathological changes in an asymptomatic dental follicle. Controversy still exists for removal of asmptomatic impacted teeth. Hence, this study was performed to histologically evaluate soft tissue pathosis in the pericoronal tissues of impacted third molars with pericoronal radiolucency measuring up to 2.5 mm on orthopantomographs.

Three patients with oligomenorrhoea and hirsutism thought to have the polycystic ovary syndrome were found to have only one ovarian cyst. Endocrine findings were similar to those found in the polycystic syndrome, but apart from the single cyst the ovaries were histologically normal; a biopsy specimen of a cyst showed normal follicular appearances and no evidence of luteinisation. These cysts may be the cause of this condition, producing abnormal amounts of ovarian steroids which modify the pituitary response. Further studies are needed, however, to determine this possibility.

Increased concentrations of Anti-Muellerian hormone (AMH) can indicate a granulosa cell tumour as shown in women, mares and cows. To investigate AMH to differentiate canine granulosa cell tumour from other ovarian pathologies, we evaluated the ovaries of 63 bitches. Blood serum samples were collected before surgery for AMH analysis. Ovaries were submitted for histopathological examination. Fourteen bitches showed normal ovaries. We report a case of multiple cystic tumors distributed on the scalp, face, neck, and upper trunk of a 68-year-old male. In all five cysts examined, the presence of molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) was demonstrated electron microscopically, and the typical histological features of MCV infection were observed in the cyst wall. In one lesion, histological features suggesting a follicular origin of the cyst were seen.

The level of pituitary hormones was measured in the serum and cysts' aspirate in a case of hyperreactio luteinalis (HL) complicating non-immune hydrops fetalis. The level of follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin and growth hormone (GH) was within normal range for pregnancy in both the serum and cysts' aspirate. The present study involves 23 patients with 25 cysts whose conditions were assessed postoperatively by means of clinical and radiological criteria. The radicular and follicular cysts were most frequently located in the anterior region of the upper jaw. With 17.4% of the total number of bone cysts, the percentage of cysts on juvenile permanent teeth is relatively low. Teeth that did not respond to irritants were the most frequent complication in the operating area. Nevertheless, the clinical and radiological findings tell against the non-vitality of these teeth.
