Scabies is a common contagious parasitic dermatosis. Transmission of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis generally occurs by skin-to-skin contact, but with crusted scabies it may also occur through fomites, such as infected clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is usually clinical. A 2010 updated Cochrane review concluded that management of scabies is based on topical scabicides, mainly 5% permethrin. However, oral ivermectin, although not licensed in many countries, may be useful, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or comply with topical therapy and in institutional scabies epidemics.

Chlamydophila felis is a causative agent of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in cats. Natural transmission mostly occurs consequently to close contact with other infected cats, their aerosol and fomites. We have examined 93 cats with symptoms of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, from Košice region in Slovakia, during the period of 2 years. Conjunctival samples were obtained from 55 domestic cats (59.14%) and 38 stray cats (40.86%). Of the total number of 93 examined animals, 42 cats were positive, which represents 45.16% overall positivity. Out of the 42 positive cats, 25 cats wer

During June 2-8, 2009, an outbreak of influenza A pandemic (H1N1) 2009 occurred among 31 members of a tour group in China. To identify the mode of transmission and risk factors, we conducted a retrospective cohort investigation. The index case-patient was a female tourist from the United States. Secondary cases developed in 9 (30%) tour group members who had talked with the index case-patient and in 1 airline passenger (not a tour group member) who had sat within 2 rows of her. None of the 14 tour group members who had not talked with the index case-patient became ill. This outbreak was appare

Scabies affects more than 200 million people around the world, and causes a significant socioeconomic impact. Prolonged skin-to-skin contact is the primary mode of transmission. Fomite-mediated transmission is uncommon, although it can be significant in crusted scabies. Topical therapy with permethrin 5% is recommended as first-line treatment. It can be indicated during pregnancy and lactation, and appears to be safe in children <2 months. However, a decrease in the effectiveness of this drug has recently been reported. Another first-line therapeutic alternative is oral ivermectin. It can be a

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an advisory for regular and thorough cleaning of hands besides other measures such as social distancing and self-isolation. The rationale for the same is to prevent the transfer of the virus from hands that have come in contact with fomites. While both alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR) or washing with soap and water are claimed to have been effective, hand sanitizers have gained more popularity due to the ease of use. The increased frequency of ABHR use and the aerosols generated pose a potential threat to the skin and exposed mucosal surfa

COVID-19 is a serious global infectious disease impairing the quality of life of people across the world. SARS-CoV-2 may reside in nasopharyngeal and salivary secretions of COVID-19-infected patients and spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and fomites. It has presented a challenge to dentistry, as many dental procedures generate aerosols that could lead to cross-contamination. It also presents many post-infection complications that may continue to debilitate patients, even after successful management of the virus. One such complication may be osteomyelitis of the jaw. Two cases of post

Mange in rabbits is a very important parasitic disease causing high losses. The disease is caused mainly by Sarcoptes scabiei, Psoroptes cuniculi, Cheyletiella parasitovorax, and Notoedres cati. Body mange and ear mange are the most common forms of this disease in rabbits. Animals can get mite infestation through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated fomites. This infestation is characterized by zoonotic nature and public health burden. The skin affection is characterized by pruritus, alopecia, severe cachexia, and sometimes death. Infestation is diagnosed mainly by skin scrapin

The world is on the edge of a new pandemic due to the monkeypox virus, an endemic virus from Africa with occurrences in the western hemisphere due to international travel. Contact with respiratory droplets, skin lesions, or bodily fluids from infected animals, direct or indirect contact with contaminated fomites can lead to transmission. A prolonged close contact is required in order for the infection to be spread. The lesions start as papules or macules, develop into pustules, umbilicated vesicles, ulcers, and, finally, into crusty scabs, similar to smallpox. No specific clinically proven tre

On September 4, 2015, the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health (WVBPH) was notified by an urban ophthalmology practice of 13 patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) diagnosed during the preceding 3 weeks. EKC is an eye infection characterized by severe inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, and can result in vision loss. Pathogens commonly detected in EKC outbreaks are human adenovirus (HAdV) serotypes 8, 19, and 37, which are spread person-to-person or by fomites; no vaccines or effective antiviral treatments are available. HAdVs that cause EKC are resistant to desiccation an

The objective of this review is to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of adenoviral conjunctivitis, as well as to present a practical update on its diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis. There are two well-defined adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis clinical syndromes: epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and pharyngoconjunctival fever, which are caused by different adenovirus serotypes. The exact incidence of adenoviral conjunctivitis is unknown. However, cases are more frequent during warmer months. Contagion is possible through direct contact or fomites and the virus is extremely

Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) are transmitted by fecally contaminated food, water, fomites, and person-to-person contact. They are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis epidemics in industrialized countries. NLV outbreaks are characterized by a 12- to 48-hour incubation period; nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 to 72 hours; and high secondary attack rates. NLV infections spread rapidly on college and university campuses because of close living quarters, shared bathrooms and common rooms, many food handlers, popular self-service salad bars in dining halls, and person-to-person contact thro

The incidence of anogenital warts in prepubertal children is increasing. Modes of transmission of human papillomavirus to the anogenital area include perinatal, autoinoculation and heteroinoculation, sexual abuse and possibly indirect transmission via fomites. It was previously thought that childhood sexual abuse was the most common mode of transmission and human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 were most often detected. More recent studies, however, would suggest that perinatal infection and autoinoculation or heteroinoculation may be much more prevalent than originally thought. It has been incr

The clinical, epidemiological and virological findings of the 1980 epidemic of acute conjunctivitis were described. Enterovirus 70 was isolated from 7 (35%) of 20 eye swabs submitted for virus isolation, and the paired sera of eight patients showed a four-fold or greater rise in neutralising antibody titre to Enterovirus 70. The disease mainly affected children and young adults of all ethnic groups. Most of the cases contracted the infection at home. The mean secondary attack rate was 72.6% and the mean incubation period, four days. The clinical features were similar to the 1970 and 1975 epide

Influenza A virus (IAV) causes annual morbidity and mortality and remains a constant pandemic threat due to the emergence of novel strains. Therefore, understanding the factors important in host-to-host transmission of IAV is a key control point for protecting individual and public health. Transmission is highly heterogeneous with viral factors and host inflammatory and immune factors being implicated. Also implicated is the upper respiratory microbiome. While typically thought to act indirectly on viral pathogenesis, in an immunomodulatory capacity to enhance or reduce susceptibility to viral

During health care, the patient is exposed to a wide variety of microorganisms. Maximum hygiene in all care activities is therefore essential in order to reduce the cross-transmission of preventable infectious diseases. The 3 key mechanisms for the prevention of infection in health centers are cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. The scientific and rational use of disinfectants and antiseptics, and the correct application of aseptic techniques in the care of patients and in the handling and supply of materials are the fundamental considerations for the prevention of healthcare related inf

Rhinoviruses have persisted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, despite other seasonal respiratory viruses (influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses, human metapneumovirus) being mostly suppressed by pandemic restrictions, such as masking and other forms of social distancing, especially during the national lockdown periods. Rhinoviruses, as nonenveloped viruses, are known to transmit effectively via the airborne and fomite route, which has allowed infection among children and adults to continue despite pandemic restrictions. Rhinoviruses are also known to cause and exa

INTRODUCTION: Clinical use of mobile phones have increased exponentially. Whilst evidence of contamination is documented, a key factor when determining potential risks of contamination, is establishing the duration the organism remains viable on the device. If pathogens are found to persist for extended duration, healthcare mobile phones may become fomites for cross departmental transmission.
AIM: Determine the duration pathogenic bacteria, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, two Pseudomonas sp. Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis susceptible and resistant to vancomycin (VSE and VRE

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) use their mobile phones during working hours or medical care. There is evidence that the instruments are colonized with pathogenic microorganisms. Here, we describe levels of Enterobacteriaceae contamination (EC) in cell phones and the risk factors associated with EC in Peruvian intensive care units (ICUs).
METHODS: This was a 5-month cohort study among 114 HCWs of 3 pediatric and 2 neonatology ICUs from 3 Peruvian hospitals. A baseline survey collected data on risk factors associated with EC. Swabs were collected from HCWs' phones every other week.

BACKGROUND: Inanimate surfaces have often been described as the source for outbreaks of nosocomial infections. The aim of this review is to summarize data on the persistence of different nosocomial pathogens on inanimate surfaces.
METHODS: The literature was systematically reviewed in MedLine without language restrictions. In addition, cited articles in a report were assessed and standard textbooks on the topic were reviewed. All reports with experimental evidence on the duration of persistence of a nosocomial pathogen on any type of surface were included.
RESULTS: Most gram-positive bacteri

Sporotrichosis is a zoonotic implantation mycosis caused by dimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. Transmission occurs through traumatic inoculation of the fungus and may involve different routes, including sapronotic transmission from contaminated soil, plants, and organic matter, zoonotic transmission mainly associated with infected felines, and, less frequently, contaminated fomites. The disease remained neglected for many years; however, several regions have recently reported outbreaks that are difficult to control. Thus, this study aimed to describe the emergence of sporotrichosis in th
