Deciphering interferon functions in avian influenza using receptor knockout models in the natural host.

In response to the pandemic-induced economic crisis for U.S. families, the federal government expanded the Child Tax Credit (CTC), making payments monthly in the second half 2021. Studies have found that these monthly payments corresponded with reductions in food insecurity, but what is not yet clear is whether these declines were stable within and across the months of receipt. Using novel, daily survey data among a sample of low-income families at high risk of food insecurity (N = 146), we tested whether the CTC payments were associated with stable rates of day-to-day food security. We found

The intersection of food insecurity and child health: Implications for policy and practice in the Bronx.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, a significant stressor for many US families and children, is strongly associated with poverty and increases the risk of adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Communities like the Bronx, disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to job losses and increased reliance on emergency food resources, experience heightened food insecurity and face increased risk of various health conditions, such as asthma. This study aims to investigate the relationship between household food insecurity risk and child health outcomes in the Bronx. METHODS: A cross-se

Improving Household Food Security Among Foreign-Born Residents of New York City Through Grocery Store Vouchers: A Pilot Program.

CONTEXT: Many foreign-born residents of the United States are food insecure and are not eligible for government assistance programs that can improve food security, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). OBJECTIVES: This evaluation aimed to assess the implementation and impact of bi-weekly grocery store vouchers on household food security among New York City foreign-born residents at risk of food insecurity. DESIGN: We employed a pre-post-test evaluation design among program participants with a baseline assessment and a follow-up assessment 8 weeks later. SETTING: This pr

Food Insufficiency and Coping Resources among Women: Postpandemic Racial, Ethnic, and Household Disparities.

Background: Empirical evidence shows women are more likely to report food hardship (e.g., food insufficiency and food insecurity) compared with men. Coronavirus disease-19 exacerbated these gender disparities; however, the impact of postpandemic social/economic/regulatory changes on women's food sufficiency and coping strategies has not been examined. This study evaluates factors associated with food insufficiency among women postpandemic. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional study design and analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey. Variations in the likelihood

Associations Between Length of US Residency and Participation in Child Nutrition Assistance Programs Among Immigrant Families.

BACKGROUND: Children in US immigrant families experience high rates of food insecurity. Participation in federal child nutrition assistance programs can reduce food insecurity. What remains unknown is whether there are disparities in the participation in these programs among immigrant families based on the length of US residency (LOR). This is an important knowledge gap because there are multiple potential pathways between LOR and common barriers to accessing federal child nutrition assistance programs. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between LOR and participation in federal child nut

Political Parties and Household Food Insecurity Among Canadian Provinces: A Panel Data Analysis, 2005-2014.

In Canada, links between social determinants and household food insecurity (HFI) are well-documented, but the influence of political parties remains unclear. This study examines whether political parties predict HFI rates across Canadian provinces and explores the mediating roles of low income and social assistance. Panel data from 2005 to 2014 were obtained from Statistics Canada, with political party strength categorized as left, center, or right. Linear regressions with Driscoll and Kraay standard errors reveal that left-leaning parties are associated with lower HFI rates, right-leaning par

Parent-Reported Adverse Childhood Experiences and Food Insecurity Among Children in Non-English-Speaking Households in the United States.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events associated with the risk of food insecurities in the United States (U.S). However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating this association, particularly for children in non-English-speaking households. Therefore, this study examines the association between individual and cumulative ACEs with food insecurity for children in non-English-speaking households in the U.S. Using data extracted from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, the weighted sample of 4,677 children aged 0 to 17 was obtained. Parental incarceration and adolescent food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: There is a causal relationship between parental incarceration (PI) and childhood food insecurity (FI). This is a pressing policy issue given that public assistance designed to curb hunger (i.e., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is often revoked due to incarceration which, on top of the removal of a household income source, can significantly alter children's food access. Yet questions remain regarding the prevalence of FI among youth with incarcerated parents, as well as the interplay of parent-child coresidence, race/ethnicity, and geographic region. METHOD: Data come fr

Invited commentary: co-occurring health conditions among women living with profound life challenges.

People challenged by homelessness are living with several losses including the loss of a home, employment, economic security, health or well-being, and personal security. Assistance programs for people who are homeless consist of housing, emergency shelter, food services, employment assistance, peer support, medical care, and mental health services. An article by Riley et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2011;175(5):515-522) appearing in this issue of the Journal examines the relation between basic subsistence needs and health outcomes in a cohort of 129 human immunodeficiency virus-infected women who wer

Rental assistance impacts on diabetes: Insights from a longitudinal mixed-methods analysis.

The U.S. faces a persistent shortage of affordable housing, forcing many low-income individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes to navigate trade-offs between housing, healthcare, and basic needs essential for disease management. Rental assistance may alleviate these pressures by increasing housing stability, reducing financial strain, and enabling safer medication storage and food preparation. However, only a fraction of eligible households receive assistance, and long waitlists create a natural comparison group for examining health impacts. This mixed-methods, two-and-a-half-year lon

Factors Associated With Food Insecurity Among a Community-Based Sample of Older Adults in a North Florida County.

Food insecurity impacts the lives of 7.6 million U.S. adults aged 60 and older and is linked to numerous life challenges. This study examined the nature of food insecurity among community-based participants ≥65 years in a north Florida county and conceptualized food insecurity as encompassing the lack of food and individual adaptability. Thus, food insecurity was measured using three dependent variables: (1) worrying that food would run out, (2) cutting meal size or skipping meals, and (3) food not lasting. Logistic regression revealed that older participants, those with better-perceived healt

Defining the role of processing in food classification systems-the IUFoST formulation & processing approach.

The Task Force on Food Processing for Nutrition, Diet and Health established by the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) has developed a rational approach to determine the impact of food processing on the nutritional value of processed foods, called the IUFoST Formulation and Processing Classification (IF&PC) scheme which is comprehensively reported here. The purpose of developing this scheme is (A) to address the current confusion between formulation and processing and thereby offer assistance to improve and refine the controversial NOVA classification system, and (B) t

The impact of US Government assistance on recidivism.

BACKGROUND: Community re-entry from custody programmes facilitate access to community resources, such as cash assistance and food stamps, with the aim of reducing criminal recidivism. Evidence that these programmes achieve is mainly from longer-term prisoners rather than short-term jail inmates. AIM: The aim of the study is to test the hypothesis that facilitating access to community resources while still in jail would reduce re-arrest rates among former jail inmates in the USA. METHODS: Community resources offered to the jail inmates participating in this study included Medicaid, food stamp

Perspectives on COVID-19-related relief measures and experience of food insecurity among low-wage worker families in two US cities.

To explore how 2020-2022 federal COVID-19 relief measures impacted food security, economic hardship and housing stability, we interviewed low-income workers in Minneapolis, MN and Raleigh, NC. Participants were a subset of 40 from a larger study with at least one child. We identified themes including mechanisms of potential impact: food assistance, increased household cash, promoting housing stability, and reducing household expenses. No single measure ameliorated hardship. Participants reported healthier food behaviors. Flexible relief measures allowed people to spend according to their needs

HIV/AIDS case managers and client HIV status disclosure: perceived client needs, practices, and services.

People living with HIV/AIDS often need assistance in deciding whether or how to disclose their HIV status to others, and case managers are in a unique position to offer this assistance. The current study surveyed 223 case managers providing services to people living with HIV/ AIDS in NewYork State. The survey was conducted anonymously, and case managers were sampled at the agency level. Results showed that two-thirds of case managers routinely discuss disclosure issues with their HIV-positive clients. However, case managers often felt that they lacked the resources to provide assistance with d
