Gestational Diabetes, Subsequent Type 2 Diabetes, and Food Security Status: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Mississippi ranks among the lowest US states in health-related quality of life (HRQoL), with disparities most severe in rural and socioeconomically disadvantaged counties, particularly the Mississippi Delta. Understanding long-term spatial and temporal patterns is critical for equity-focused public health strategies. We aimed to describe geographic disparities in HRQoL across Mississippi's 82 counties from 2015 through 2025, identify persistent hot spots of poor health, assess convergence with national averages, and inform tailored interventions. METHODS: We used County Health R

COVID-19 implications on household income and food security in Kenya and Uganda: Findings from a rapid assessment.

This study assessed implications of the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic on household income and food security in two East African countries - Kenya and Uganda, using online survey data from 442 respondents. Results show that more than two-thirds of the respondents experienced income shocks due to the COVID-19 crisis. Food security and dietary quality worsened, as measured by the food insecurity experience scale and the frequency of consumption of nutritionally-rich foods. The proportion of food insecure respondents increased by 38% and 44% in Kenya and Uganda respectively, and in bo

Bridging barriers to advance multisector approaches to improve food security, nutrition and population health in Nepal: transdisciplinary perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Understanding stakeholders' perceptions is crucial to the development and implementation of any intervention. However, a structured approach to eliciting stakeholder insights into complex, multisector issues of food security, household environment and health is lacking in many low and middle-income countries. This qualitative, workshop-based participatory study explores stakeholders' experiences of developing and implementing multisector interventions to provide transdisciplinary lessons for future developments in low and middle-income countries. METHODS: Participants were purpose

Why do Farmers Grow Diversity? Reaching Beyond Own-Consumption and Agricultural Income to Support Food Security and Nutrition.

Background: Having diverse crops and animals on small farms is broadly seen as a way to support both farmer nutrition and environmental resilience. However, studies often find only a weak statistical relationship between the diversity produced and the diversity consumed. Understanding why smallholder farmers produce diversity is central both for operationalizing agriculture-nutrition linkages and for supporting resilient agro-ecosystems. Objective: This study examines farmers' own reasons for producing diversity and explores how these reasons shape the production-diet relationship. Methods: As

Exploring climate smart agriculture in Turkey: Enhancing food security and sustainable practices for the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

Climate-smart agriculture entails the reduction of CO₂ emissions, adaptation and modification of technology to enhance resilience to climate change, and sustainable increase of incomes. This study evaluates the effectiveness of smart agricultural practices in Turkey, which significantly impact food security and mitigate CO₂ emissions. The decoupling technique was implemented to estimate the portfolio returns and examine their correlation with climate-smart agriculture and CO₂ emissions over the anticipated period of 1992-2023. The decoupling technique was implemented to accomplish the two prim

Coordinated Development and Spatiotemporal Evolution Trends of China's Agricultural Trade and Production from the Perspective of Food Security.

Ensuring food security necessitates a high level of coordinated development between agricultural trade and production. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2010 to 2023, this study constructs an evaluation index system for agricultural trade and production, employing an entropy-weighted TOPSIS model to measure their development levels. On this basis, a coupling coordination degree model and Moran's I indices are used to analyze the coordinated development level's temporal changes and spatial effects. The research finds that the development levels of China's agricultural trade and produc

Integrated bio-straw resources and chemical fertilizer management for food and environmental security in Chinese wheat-based production.

High environmental costs can be incurred in wheat-based agricultural systems (WBASs), from wheat grain production to straw management. Carbohydrate accumulation and partitioning determine the grain and straw yields, and the related food security and environmental cost in the whole system. We systemically investigated the wheat carbohydrate partitioning pattern to develop the new regional grain/straw yield models for China. Based on the newly developed models and a life cycle assessment, we assessed the carbon (C) mitigation potential for different grain yield increases scenarios. When the grai

Compounding impacts of COVID-19, cyclone and price crash on vanilla farmers' food security and natural resource use.

The intersection of the COVID-19 pandemic with other crises can amplify vulnerabilities and push communities further into poverty. In low-income countries, the dual impacts of COVID-19 and extreme weather events, along with multidimensional poverty and structural vulnerabilities in agriculture can decimate farmer livelihoods. This study aims to understand the effects of individual and compounding crises (COVID-19, cyclones, and vanilla price collapse) on smallholder vanilla farmers and local coping strategies in Madagascar, one of the world's largest vanilla producers and poorest countries.
