Forensic remarks regarding 35 cases of complex suicides and 4 cases of complicated suicides investigated at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Brescia during the period 1983-2022.

The role of the forensic pathologist is central to both identifying the cause and determining the manner of death. Distinguishing a suicide from a homicide or accidental event is essential to define whether third parties are involved in death. Suicides are most frequently performed using a single method; therefore, they can be defined as simple. The term "complex suicide" refers to a form of suicide in which two or more methods are applied by the victim, simultaneously or in chronological succession, to achieve the death. The different methods may have been planned in advance to prevent failur

Clitoral epidermal cyst after excision in an 8-year-old girl: the pivotal role of forensic medicine in the detection and care of female genital mutilation (FGM)-related complications.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to socio-cultural practices involving the partial or total removal of a woman's external genitalia for non-medical purposes. These procedures are associated with numerous short- and long-term physical and psychological complications. While such complications are relatively well documented in adults, pediatric cases remain insufficiently reported. Forensic physicians are often the first - and sometimes the only - healthcare providers to detect and document these complications, particularly in asylum contexts. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the c

[Usefulness of the initial medical examination on matters relating to persons suspected of driving under the influence of amphetamine and its analogs or delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol based on the materials the Department of Forensic Medicine, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin].

INTRODUCTION: Polish law forbids persons to drive under the influence of intoxicating substances, and those after the use of substances producing effects similar to alcohol. Therefore, there is a need to give an opinion based on a blood test, to establish whether or not the person from whom the blood was taken was under the influence of an intoxicating substance or after use of the drug while driving. Some authors reported that the final opinion should take into account chemical and toxicology test results identifying the parent compound and/or the metabolite only, but also the sampling time o

Vertigo and medico-legal problems.

Forensic medicine deals with the interactions of medical science with the law. All branches of medicine can play a role in dealing with medico-legal problems. Clinical and forensic evaluators need to be able to recognize variations of symptoms or syndromes that "don't read the textbooks". Atypical presentations of dizziness or vertigo have the potential to cause much confusion in diagnosis, treatment planning, and legal adjudication, if not correctly recognized. This article describes the forensic medicine in the legal system and forensic aspects of other medical specialities, gives an overvie

Distinction between forensic evidence and dermatological findings.

The external examination after death requires knowledge in forensics/pathology, dermatology, as well as associated diseases and age-related alterations of the skin. This article highlights some findings with forensic evidence versus dermatological findings. The lectures in forensic medicine should be structured interdisciplinarily, especially to dermatology, internal medicine, surgery, pathology, and toxicology in order to train the overlapping skills required for external and internal postmortem examinations.
