Leaf Hydraulic Conductance Mediates the Effect of Precipitation on Leaf Nutrients in Subtropical Forests.

Precipitation will increase in some regions and decrease in others. These changes can alter plant nutrient status, and consequently, impact the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, the ecological and physiological mechanisms underlying plant nutrient responses to changes in precipitation remain poorly understood. Here, we propose that both soil nutrients and plant hydraulic traits mediate precipitation effects on leaf nutrients. To test this hypothesis, we measured leaf nutrient and hydraulic traits alongside soil properties across 12 Eucalyptus urophylla plantations along a mean annual precipit

Restoration Approaches Regulate Soil Multifunctionality via Microbial Nitrogen and Plant Diversity in Northern Forests.

Long-term anthropogenic disturbances have damaged forest ecosystems, and different restoration approaches after disturbance play a crucial regulatory role in maintaining and enhancing ecosystem functions. However, existing studies have mostly focused on the response characteristics of single ecosystem functions, while research on the impacts of different restoration methods on soil multifunctionality of forests and their driving mechanisms remains scarce. Taking the completely anthropogenically disturbed Quercus wutaishanica communities in northern deciduous broad-leaved forests as the researc

Wood-boring insect galleries restructure fungal communities in declining Nothofagus pumilio forests of Patagonia.

Forest decline is often driven by complex interactions among biotic and abiotic factors, including insects and fungi that influence tree health and disease development. In Patagonian forests, decline of Nothofagus pumilio has been associated with wood-boring insects and wood-inhabiting fungi. However, the role of insect galleries in shaping fungal communities within living trees remains poorly understood. Here we characterized fungal communities associated with galleries produced by two wood-boring insects colonizing different woody tissues of living N. pumilio: ambrosia beetles Gnathotrupes s

Plant diversity's positive effect on soil respiration diminishes with increasing productivity in global forests.

Plant diversity is essential for regulating ecosystem functions, yet its global-scale relationship with soil respiration, a critical component of the carbon cycle, remains unexplored. While plant productivity modulates ecosystem processes, understanding how plant species richness regulates soil respiration across net primary production gradients is key to predicting carbon-climate feedbacks. Here, we integrate two global plant species richness datasets (tree species richness and vascular plant species richness, including woody and non-woody plants) with a global soil respiration dataset estima

Reducing resilience debt: Mechanical felling and repeated prescribed fires may sustain eastern oak forests.

The misalignment of species adaptations with current environmental conditions can cause ecosystems to lose resilience, accumulate resilience debt, and transition to another state. Such a state change is evident in eastern North American broadleaf forests where dominant tree species are shifting from oaks (Quercus spp.) to mesophytic species such as maples (Acer spp.). The replacement of oaks is widespread and threatens the ecosystem services these forests provide, generating interest in using forest management to halt or reverse this change. The national Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) study was

Phosphorus reference conditions in lowland streams: Survey in old forests and anaerobic sediment release.

The reference (pristine) concentrations of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) in surface waters are difficult to define in lowland regions because of their high population density. Here, we estimated reference conditions of TDP from headwaters and their riverbed sediments (n = 140) in old forests. Surface waters and sediments were collected in the lowland region of Belgium as transects starting in 20 different old forests (before 1775; pristine) to up to 1.5 km outside the forest edge (disturbed). Sediment P concentrations in disturbed samples readily increased with increasing distance from the

Analyzing Walking Route Choice through Built Environments using Random Forests and Discrete Choice Techniques.

Walking is a form of active transportation with numerous benefits, including better health outcomes, lower environmental impacts and stronger communities. Understanding built environmental associations with walking behavior is a key step towards identifying design features that support walking. Human mobility data available through GPS receivers and cell phones, combined with high resolution walkability data, provide a rich source of georeferenced data for analyzing environmental associations with walking behavior. However, traditional techniques such as route choice models have difficulty wit

Fruiting and flushing phenology in Asian tropical and temperate forests: implications for primate ecology.

In order to understand the ecological adaptations of primates to survive in temperate forests, we need to know the general patterns of plant phenology in temperate and tropical forests. Comparative analyses have been employed to investigate general trends in the seasonality and abundance of fruit and young leaves in tropical and temperate forests. Previous studies have shown that (1) fruit fall biomass in temperate forest is lower than in tropical forest, (2) non-fleshy species, in particular acorns, comprise the majority of the fruit biomass in temperate forest, (3) the duration of the fruiti

Seeing trees OR seeing forests in simultanagnosia: attentional capture can be local or global.

Patients with simultanagnosia often demonstrate 'local capture', meaning that they identify only the local elements of stimuli that contain a hierarchy of both local and global structures. Recent studies, however, have found that these patients may implicitly process the global form. We examined the general applicability of the concept of local capture, and specifically whether the global level of stimuli can be explicitly reported by patients with simultanagnosia. We tested a patient with simultanagnosia with globally biased stimuli such as hierarchical Arcimboldo faces and small, dense Navon

Methylmercury and total mercury in plant litter decomposing in upland forests and flooded landscapes.

The overall objectives of this study were to examine the effects of flooding on the decomposition and mercury (Hg) content of tissues from plants common to boreal upland forests at the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario. We used litterbags to study changes in total Hg (THg), methyl Hg (MeHg), carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) in 12 different plant tissues (birch, alder, blueberry, and Labrador tea leaves, bunchberry plants, jack pine needles, Sphagnum spp., Polytrichum spp., and Pleurozium spp. bryophytes, lichen, and fresh and extensively decomposed wood) placed on unflooded boreal fo

Human monkeypox: a newly emerged orthopoxvirus zoonosis in the tropical rain forests of Africa.

During the course of the recently concluded smallpox eradication program, a new human orthopoxvirus infection was discovered which is caused by monkeypox virus. The disease occurs sporadically in remote villages within tropical rain forests of West and Central Africa. The disease is rare; only 155 cases having been reported from 1970 to 1983. The symptoms and signs of human monkeypox resemble those of smallpox, differing significantly only in the occurrence of lymphadenopathy with human monkeypox disease. Of 155 cases, some 80% are believed to have resulted from infection from an as yet unknow

Repeated large-scale forest inventory data from an unmanaged European beech forest at Hainich National Park, Germany.

This dataset contains forest inventory data from four censuses (1999, 2007, 2013 and 2023) from a single ~28 ha permanent monitoring plot in a beech-dominated forest that has been unmanaged since 1965 at Hainich National Park, Thuringia, Germany. For each census, the location, species identity and diameter at breast height (dbh) of all living trees with a dbh ≥1 cm was recorded. Additional attributes for living trees include vitality, crown coverage by neighboring trees, sociological class, and observed damages. For trees that died since the previous census, information on cause of mortality,

War drives forest fire risks and highlights the need for more ecologically-sound forest management in post-war Ukraine.

Since 24 February 2022, Ukraine has experienced full-scale military aggression initiated by the Russian Federation. The war has had a major negative impact on vegetation cover of war-affected regions. We explored interactions between pre-war forest management and the impacts of military activities in three of the most forested Ukrainian areas of interest (AOI), affected by the war. These were forests lying between Kharkiv and Luhansk cities (AOI 'East'), forests along the Dnipro River delta (AOI 'Kherson'), and those of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (AOI CEZ). We used Sentinel satellite imagery

Long-term tropical cyclones activity shapes forest structure and reduces tree species diversity of U.S. temperate forests.

Increasing tropical cyclone (TC) pressure on temperate forests is inevitable under the recent global increase of the intensity and poleward migration of TCs. However, the long-term effects of TCs on large-scale structure and diversity of temperate forests remain unclear. Here, we aim to ascertain the legacy of TCs on forest structure and tree species richness by using structural equation models that consider several environmental gradients and use an extensive dataset containing >140,000 plots with >3 million trees from natural temperate forests across eastern United States impacted by TCs. Forest malaria and prospects for anti-malarial chemoprophylaxis among forest goers: findings from a qualitative study in Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant decline in malarial incidence and mortality in countries across the Greater Mekong Subregion, the disease remains a public health challenge in the region; transmission continues mainly among people who visit forests in remote areas, often along international borders, where access to primary healthcare is limited. In the absence of effective vector-control measures and limited exposure periods, malaria chemoprophylaxis has been proposed as a strategy to protect forest goers. As a rarely used approach for indigenous populations, questions remain about its feasibil

[Medical particularities during prolonged demanding activity in a tropical forest. Experience of the tropical forest training center (French Guyana)].

A tropical forest is a hostile environment for humans. The military physician supporting these immersion activities must cope with varied clinical situations with limited resources to reduce operational unavailability. This article reports a prospective cross-sectional epidemiologic study conducted from January to May 2012, observing the daily activity at sick call during the rainy season at the tropical forest training center (CEFE) advanced jungle commando training, located in French Guyana. The aim was to observe the distribution of traumatic injuries and specific diseases in this tropical

Spatially explicit assessment of multihazard exposure in the Zagros forests of Iran: the role of canopy structure in the exposure component of forest vulnerability.

Mountain forests face increasing threats from interacting climatic, environmental, and socioecological stressors, yet most vulnerability assessments still use single-hazard approaches that overlook cumulative environmental risk. This limitation is especially important in Iran's Zagros forests, where climate change and human pressures are accelerating ecological consequences. We developed a spatially explicit multihazard exposure framework to quantify forest exposure to multiple environmental stressors and assess its relationship with canopy-cover structure. Nine environmental and socioecologic

Restoration of Vegetation Greenness and Possible Changes in Mature Forest Communities in Two Forests Damaged by the Vaia Storm in Northern Italy.

Windstorms are rare in the Southern Alps, but their frequency is increasing due to climate change. This research analyzed the vegetation of two spruce forests in Camonica Valley (Northern Italy) destroyed by the Vaia storm to evaluate the vegetation responses to blowdown damage. In each study area, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to evaluate the change in plant cover and greenness from 2018 (before the Vaia storm) to 2021. Furthermore, floristic-vegetation data were analyzed to identify current plant communities and develop models of plant succession. The results sho
