Intact visual imagery and impaired visual perception in a patient with visual agnosia.

Although it is now well accepted that visual mental imagery and visual perception share common underlying mechanisms, there are several reports in which they are dissociated. Evidence for the separability of these processes is provided by a patient, C.K., who has a profound visual object recognition deficit attributable to an impairment in grouping or segmenting visual images. Despite this perceptual deficit, C.K. was able to draw objects in considerable detail from memory, and his knowledge of the visual appearance of objects was preserved on a variety of mental imagery tasks. Together with p

The computational dynamics of shape orientation perception.

How does the brain transform retinal information into representations of oriented objects? The most comprehensive computational explanation to date - the coordinate-system hypothesis of orientation representation - proposes that this transformation relies on the computation of four parameters that jointly define the relationship between a shape and its environment: axis correspondence, polarity correspondence, tilt direction, and tilt magnitude. The goal of this research was to investigate whether these parameters are computed in parallel or serially and, if so, in which order. To do so, we co

Body size and shape misperception and visual adaptation: An overview of an emerging research paradigm.

Although body size and shape misperception (BSSM) is a common feature of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia, little is known about its underlying neural mechanisms. Recently, a new approach has emerged, based on the long-established non-invasive technique of perceptual adaptation, which allows for inferences about the structure of the neural apparatus responsible for alterations in visual appearance. Here, we describe several recent experimental examples of BSSM, wherein exposure to "extreme" body stimuli causes visual aftereffects of biased perception. The implications of

The ideal male jaw angle--An Internet survey.

BACKGROUND: The ideal male jaw angle has not been established. With the advent of additive manufacturing, precise customized shaping is a reality. This study aimed to define the ideal masculine mandibular angle as an aid for 3-dimensional (3D) design. METHODS: An Internet survey was conducted using black/white photographs of celebrities and non-celebrities. Preferences regarding gonial angle (profile and frontal views), intergonial width and vertical jaw angle position (face frontal view), and angle curvature and definition in oblique views were obtained using simplified, unbalanced Likert sc

Alligator or squirrel: musically induced fear reveals threat in ambiguous figures.

Extant evidence has shown that fear can influence what we see. Fear can exaggerate threatening visual features or make them more salient. Here we show that fear can alter the meaning of what is seen. Three newly devised ambiguous figures that can be seen as benign or dangerous objects were presented for brief intervals. The majority of participants reported perceiving benign objects in a neutral control condition and in a condition in which happiness was induced; but, when fear was induced, the majority reported seeing dangerous objects. This suggests that fear can alter the meaning attributed

[A case of visual agnosia for picture with right occipital lobe infarction].

We report a 74-year-old right-handed man with visual agnosia for picture due to right occipital lobe infarction. The patient had a remarkable impairment in visual recognition for standardized pictures made by Snodgrass and Vanderwart, in addition to left hemianopsia, left visuospatial neglect, and mild prosopagnosia. The visual agnosia for picture was generally recognized as a mild-type of the visual object agnosia, which was extremely rare in the patients with right occipital lesion. We discussed the mechanism of the visual agnosia in the right occipital lesion. Therefore, it raises the possi

Effects of distinctive-feature training and instructional technique on letter and form discrimination.

Techniques for facilitating alphabet letter discrimination were investigated within the framework of distinctive feature and attention theory. To compare the effectiveness of three instructional procedures for emphasizing distinctive features, experimenters gave separate groups of children either distinctive-feature training, high-lighting of the features, or distinctive-feature training plus fading-in of the letter forms, along with a control, for each of three dimensions. The horizontal-slant, open-close, and straight-curve dimensions were chosen for study. Training effects were assessed by

Context-dependent sequential effects of target selection for action.

Humans exhibit variation in behavior from moment to moment even when performing a simple, repetitive task. Errors are typically followed by cautious responses, minimizing subsequent distractor interference. However, less is known about how variation in the execution of an ultimately correct response affects subsequent behavior. We asked participants to reach toward a uniquely colored target presented among distractors and created two categories to describe participants' responses in correct trials based on analyses of movement trajectories; partial errors referred to trials in which observers

[Fusion amplitude and aniseikonia. Experimental studies of aniseikonia tolerance in unilateral aphakia].

The fusion amplitude of image pairs with aniseikonia was measured using the synoptophore. Aniseikonia was produced in five subjects by alteration of slide drawings. The subject's right eye was in cycloplegia after paralysis with cycloplegic eye drops. To compare these measurements with aniseikonic pictures to those using the same image pairs without aniseikonia the fusion amplitude achieved was expressed as a percentage of the aniseikonia-free fusion amplitude. The relation between aniseikonia, eccentricity of the image borders and percent fusion amplitude was described using a mathematical ap

Symmetry in building block design for learning disabled and nonlearning disabled boys.

This study examined perceptual differences in symmetry with and without a model between 21 learning disabled boys with reading deficits and 28 learning disabled boys with deficits in mathematics. 55 nonlearning disabled boys served as controls. All boys were in Grades 3, 4, or 5. Without a model, all learning disabled boys built significantly more asymmetrical building block designs than nonlearning disabled boys. However, with a model, all learning disabled boys could imitate the model, but it took them longer to complete the task successfully. All boys appeared to have difficulty in modeling

Infants' discrimination of moving and stationary objects.

An operant technique was used to train 10-wk.-old infants on a simultaneous discrimination task with a checkerboard cube and a bull's-eye sphere presented in a stationary form. Discrimination testing with the objects in motion and with the objects stationary indicated that infants are able to discriminate between simultaneously presented objects whether stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects.

Mobile computation: spatiotemporal integration of the properties of objects in motion.

We demonstrate that, as an object moves, color and motion signals from successive, widely spaced locations are integrated, but letter and digit shapes are not. The features that integrate as an object moves match those that integrate when the eyes move but the object is stationary (spatiotopic integration). We suggest that this integration is mediated by large receptive fields gated by attention and that it occurs for surface features (motion and color) that can be summed without precise alignment but not shape features (letters or digits) that require such alignment. Rapidly alternating pairs

The role of human ventral visual cortex in motion perception.

Visual motion perception is fundamental to many aspects of visual perception. Visual motion perception has long been associated with the dorsal (parietal) pathway and the involvement of the ventral 'form' (temporal) visual pathway has not been considered critical for normal motion perception. Here, we evaluated this view by examining whether circumscribed damage to ventral visual cortex impaired motion perception. The perception of motion in basic, non-form tasks (motion coherence and motion detection) and complex structure-from-motion, for a wide range of motion speeds, all centrally displaye

Influence of Sparse Contact Point and Finger Penetration in Object on Shape Recognition.

Making a virtual object shape recognizable using a haptic display is one of the major themes of haptic research. In previous works, multipoint haptic displays have been developed that had a high contact point density between the users' finger skin and the virtual object. However, the ideal contact point density that enables intuitive shape recognition has not been determined yet. Meanwhile, there is also a fundamental problem; that is, real fingers and virtual objects do penetrate, which cannot be solved with such wearable displays. This article investigated the influence of both contact point

Race coding and the other-race effect in face recognition.

Other-race faces are generally recognised more poorly than own-race faces. According to Levin's influential race-coding hypothesis, this other-race recognition deficit results from spontaneous coding of race-specifying information, at the expense of individuating information, in other-race faces. Therefore, requiring participants to code race-specifying information for all faces should eliminate the other-race effect by reducing recognition of own-race faces to the level of other-race faces. We tested this prediction in two experiments. Race coding was induced by requiring participants to rate

Event-related brain potentials: report order and task switch on multidimensional stimuli identification.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of order of reporting stimulus dimension in multidimensional stimulus identification using a switch-task paradigm. Participants were required to identify each two-dimensional symbol by pushing the corresponding buttons on the keypad on which there were two columns representing the two dimensions, part and shape. The two orders of report were Order Part/Shape and Order Shape/Part. There was a task cue prior to each presentation of a symbol indicating the particular report order the participants should perform. The cue changed randomly. Both beh

Aberrations and myopia.

It has been suggested that high levels of axial aberration or specific patterns of peripheral refraction could play a role in myopia development. Possible mechanisms involving high levels of retinal image blur caused by axial aberrations include form deprivation through poor retinal image quality in distance vision, enhanced accommodative lags favouring compensatory eye growth, and an absence of adequate directional cues to guide emmetropization. In addition, in initially emmetropic eyes, hyperopia in the retinal periphery may result in local compensatory eye growth, which induces axial myopia

Visuomotor sensitivity for shape and orientation in a patient with visual form agnosia.

We have previously demonstrated that a patient with visual form agnosia (DF), who is unable to report the orientation or size of visual targets, can nevertheless use these same visual attributes to control motor acts. In the first of three new experiments, we found that DF is able to grasp everyday tools and utensils proficiently (i.e. with a well-formed hand posture) but has difficulty in visually selecting the correct part of the object to grasp (e.g. the handle) for subsequent use of that object. A second experiment revealed that DF's visuomotor system is able to adjust concurrently to vari

A comparison of the changes in suprathreshold apparent contrast in acute and simulated optic neuritis.

A thin PVC film was used as a diffusion filter together with glass lenses in order to induce a unilateral artificial contrast sensitivity depression in controls. These artificially depressed contrast sensitivity functions were made comparable to those assessed in patients during the recovery phase of their acute unilateral optic neuritis. A technique of subjective suprathreshold contrast matching was used to determine the suprathreshold apparent contrast in patients and controls with acute and simulated optic neuritis respectively. The results showed that differences in apparent contrast betwe
