Association between an anti-inflammatory low-carbohydrate diet and gingivitis in women with obesity.

BACKGROUND: The Western diet contributes to the onset and progression of gingivitis. In contrast, an anti-inflammatory low-carbohydrate diet (AILCD) has been proposed as a dietary recommendation to improve gingival health. Although a few published studies have investigated the influence of an anti-inflammatory diet on gingivitis in individuals of normal weight, this study aimed to evaluate the association between an AILCD and gingivitis in women with obesity. METHODS: Twenty-three women with obesity and gingivitis participated in the 2-month study. Clinical parameters, including plaque index

Next-generation sequencing analysis of bacterial species present in the sequestrum of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw patients.

OBJECTIVE: Antiresorptives cases of adverse reactions to highly effective drugs used to treat skeletal-related events that occur during treatment of osteoporosis or malignancy have been reported in the jaw. To date, there is no clear pathophysiology for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), but the role of inflammation or infection has been proposed as one of several possible pathogenesis theories. This study was designed to investigate the role of infection in the pathogenesis of MRONJ by analyzing the microbial communities observed in the bone samples from MRONJ patients. DES

[Subgingival microbiota in chronic and aggressive periodontitis in Bogotá, Colombia: an epidemiological approach].

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis-associated microbiotas differ in regions around the world and vary with a variety of factors. This suggests that each country must establish its own dental microbiobiotic profile in order to formulate adequate prevention measures and more specific treatments. OBJECTIVE: The prevalence and proportions of the following microorganisms were investigated: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia/Prevotella nigrescens, Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter rectus, Micromonas micros, Fusobacterium spp, Dialis

Differential Responses of Pattern Recognition Receptors to Outer Membrane Vesicles of Three Periodontal Pathogens.

Highly purified outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) of the periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia were produced using tangential flow ultrafiltration, ultracentrifugation and Optiprep density gradient separation. Cryo-TEM and light scattering showed OMVs to be single lipid-bilayers with modal diameters of 75 to 158 nm. Enumeration of OMVs by nanoparticle flow-cytometry at the same stage of late exponential culture indicated that P. gingivalis was the most prolific OMV producer. P. gingivalis OMVs induced strong TLR2 and TLR4-specific responses

Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria in untreated periodontitis.

Whether the subgingival microbiota differ between individuals with chronic and those with aggressive periodontitis, and whether smoking influences bacterial composition, is controversial. We hypothesized that the subgingival microbiota do not differ between sites in individuals with chronic or aggressive periodontitis, or by smoking status. Bacterial counts and proportional distributions were assessed in 84 individuals with chronic periodontitis and 22 with aggressive periodontitis. No differences in probing pocket depth by periodontal status were found (mean, 0.11 mm; 95% CI, 0.6 to 0.8, p =

Forsythiaside A ameliorates acetaminophen-induced liver injury by suppressing ferroptosis through activating USP11/SIRT3-mediated mitophagy.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Acetaminophen (APAP), a widely used antipyretic and analgesic, frequently causes liver injury upon overdose. The fruit of Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl, known as Forsythiae Fructus, is a traditional Chinese medicine used to clear heat and toxic, remove lumps, and reduce swelling. Forsythiaside A (FTA), an important active ingredient in Forsythiae Fructus, has significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects. However, its protective mechanisms against acetaminophen-induced liver injury (AILI) remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study

B-Cell RANKL Contributes to Pathogen-Induced Alveolar Bone Loss in an Experimental Periodontitis Mouse Model.

Periodontitis is a bacterially-induced inflammatory disease that leads to tooth loss. It results from the damaging effects of a dysregulated immune response, mediated largely by neutrophils, macrophages, T cells and B cells, on the tooth-supporting tissues including the alveolar bone. Specifically, infiltrating B cells at inflamed gingival sites with an ability to secrete RANKL and inflammatory cytokines are thought to play roles in alveolar bone resorption. However, the direct contribution of B cells in alveolar bone resorption has not been fully appreciated. In this study we sought to define

Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis gingipains in multi-species biofilm formation.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal diseases are polymicrobial diseases that cause the inflammatory destruction of the tooth-supporting (periodontal) tissues. Their initiation is attributed to the formation of subgingival biofilms that stimulate a cascade of chronic inflammatory reactions by the affected tissue. The Gram-negative anaerobes Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola are commonly found as part of the microbiota of subgingival biofilms, and they are associated with the occurrence and severity of the disease. P. gingivalis expresses several virulence factors that m

Comparative Study on the Antivirus Activity of Shuang-Huang-Lian Injectable Powder and Its Bioactive Compound Mixture against Human Adenovirus III In Vitro.

Shuang-Huang-Lian injectable powder (SHL)-a classical purified herbal preparation extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis, Lonicera japonica, and Forsythia suspense-has been used against human adenovirus III (HAdV₃) for many years. The combination herb and its major bioactive compounds, including chlorogenic acid, baicalin, and forsythia glycosides A, are effective inhibitors of the virus. However, no comprehensive studies are available on the antiviral effects of SHL against HAdV₃. Moreover, it remains unclear whether the mixture of chlorogenic acid, baicalin, and forsythia glycosides A (CBF)

Herpesviral-bacterial interrelationships in aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Recent findings have begun to provide a basis for a causal link between herpesviruses and aggressive periodontitis. One theory is that herpesviruses cooperate with specific bacteria in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. This study examined whether the presence of herpesviruses [human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) type 1, herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2] is associated with the presence of putative pathogenic bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) in aggr
