The relationship between bone pain and stress fractures diagnosed by bone scintigraphy was investigated in military recruits during active training. In three patients pain appeared in the site of abnormal uptake 7-14 days after the bone scan in a previously asymptomatic site. One hundred and twenty-four sites of stress fractures were found in 64 patients; 32 (26 per cent) were asymptomatic. In 38 patients (59 per cent) there were multiple stress fractures; 32 (33 per cent) had asymptomatic stress fractures. Fifty-three per cent of the regions with abnormal uptake in the femur were painless, co

INTRODUCTION: Metatarsal Stress Fractures (MSFs) are commonly occurring overuse injuries for athletes and soldiers. This paper investigated publication patterns, top authors, networks, and themes associated with MSFs.
METHODOLOGY: Bibliometric analysis of publications on MSFs published during the period from 1970-2026 was carried out using the Web of Science Core Collection. Network and visualization of bibliometric analyses were carried out using VOSviewer.
RESULTS: A total of 479 publications were identified. There has been a significant rise in research output following 2011, peaking duri

Stress fractures are common in young and active individuals, associated with aggressive or repetitive physical activity and their early detection is fundamental to optimise patient care, decrease complications and avoid unnecessary exams. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging is the standard of care for detecting these lesions. Recently, ultrasound has been getting an increasing interest for the detection of stress fractures. In this article, we describe a clinical case that involved a second metatarsal stress fracture diagnosed by ultrasound and review the literature regarding the use of ultr

Stress fractures are a consequence of repeated submaximal loads with inadequate time for recovery and biologic repair or remodelling. The foot and ankle complex (FAC) represents a common site for development of stress fractures. Whilst the overall incidence of stress fractures is low, they are prevalent in athletes and military personnel causing significant time away from sports or work. Within these populations, certain stress fractures directly correlate to specific activities. Factors that commonly influence these fractures include an acute increase in new repetitive physical activity combi

UNLABELLED: There is an intricate connection between physical activity, bone health, and the susceptibility to stress fractures and overuse injuries. Physical activity has a positive impact on bone strength while a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a heightened risk for injury. The rise of early sports specialization has led to a substantial increase in overuse injuries, particularly in individual sports.Bone Stress Injuries (BSI) represent a category of overuse injuries closely linked to single sport specialization. BSI involves a spectrum of altered bone mechanics, ranging from edema of perios

Stress fractures are often associated to activities that requires repetitive stress such as running. However, insufficiency-type stress fractures can also occur in patients with risk factors such as rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis of stress fracture would require a thorough clinical evaluation along with radiological imaging. However, this may be difficult due to how it mimics other musculoskeletal problems. The case of a woman in her 60s presenting with 2 months of severe ipsilateral right knee and ankle pain is used as an example. Based on initial clinical assessment and plain radiograph, he

INTRODUCTION: Long-term bisphosphonate use has been linked to an increased risk of pathological neck of femur fractures.
CASE REPORT: We write concerning a patient who presented with the left hip pain following a low impact fall, which was diagnosed as a pathological left neck of femur fracture. This was a subtrochanteric stress fracture most frequently seen in patients who take bisphosphonate medications. A key point of difference in our patient is the length of time of bisphosphonate use. A further interesting point was the method of imaging used to diagnose this fracture whereby plain radi

Bilateral fracture of the lumbar pedicles is a rare phenomenon that may arise secondary to underlying risk factors. Our case demonstrates bilateral pedicle stress fractures arising in an otherwise healthy 41-year-old male. After failing to respond to conservative measures, he was managed with bilateral pedicle screws. Our patient did not report any incidence of trauma, but he did engage in amateur weightlifting - we suspect that this was the cause of his fractures.

Stress fractures of the upper limb affect athletes from a wide range of sports. Athletes involved in throwing sports are particularly susceptible along with athletes from sports involving high repetitive and compressive loads such as gymnastics. Diagnosis can be made from clinical history, examination and radiography in some cases however MRI imaging is often required for definitive diagnosis. The mainstay of management is rest and activity modification however advanced pathology often requires surgical management for successful resolution and return to play. In the elbow, the bones susceptibl

Stress fractures and other bony stress injuries occur along a spectrum of severity which can impact treatment and prognosis. When treating these injuries, it should be borne in mind that no two stress fractures behave exactly alike. Given that they are not a consistent injury, standardized treatment protocols can be challenging to develop. Treatment should be individualized to the patient or athlete, the causative activity, the anatomical site, and the severity of the injury. A holistic approach to the treatment of the most difficult stress fractures should be taken by orthopedists and sports

BACKGROUND: Stress fractures are the result of cyclic loading of the bone, which gradually becomes damaged. Most often they are treated by rest or plaster cast and, in rare cases, by internal fixation. There is little published data on initial reposition followed by stabilization with the Ilizarov apparatus in such fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six patients were treated with an external fixator according to the Ilizarov method for a stress fracture of the tibia between 2007 and 2015. Three patients were initially treated conservatively. Due to increasing tibial deformation, they were quali

Metatarsal stress fractures are common overuse injuries in athletes, military recruits, and ballet dancers, usually occurring in the second, third, and fourth metatarsals, respectively. Such fractures may also occur in a variety of other individuals, regardless of demographic characteristics, sex, or profession, and they are highly associated with excessive activity. Moreover, these types of fractures are usually diagnosed late and have poor outcomes. To our knowledge, there has been only one case report of an individual with stress fractures of all three central metatarsals in the same foot.

PURPOSE: To report characteristics and outcomes of 8 patients who underwent intramedullary nailing for alendronate-associated femoral insufficiency fractures.
METHODS: Records of 7 women and one man aged 54 to 91 (mean, 72) years who underwent intramedullary nailing for spontaneous or low-energy, alendronateassociated femoral insufficiency fractures were retrospectively reviewed. Contralateral femurs were assessed for stress reactions.
RESULTS: All patients had at least 4 (range, 4-10) years of alendronate use. Five patients had experienced prodromal pain lasting one day to 5 months. Five pa

Stress fractures of the tibia secondary to tibial deformities from osteoarthritis are rare, and may be difficult to manage. We treated two patients with stress fractures of the proximal tibial diaphyses over a period of two years. Both patients had osteoarthritis of the knee; one with genu valgus deformity and the other, genu varus deformity. The former patient also had a distal tibial fracture and had previously undergone open reduction and internal fixation. The stress fractures of both the patients had been treated conservatively by nonoperative means, but their fractures failed to unite. T

Although it is much less common than injuries in the lower extremities, an upper extremity stress injury can have a significant impact on an athlete. If an accurate and timely diagnosis is to be made, the clinician must have a high index of suspicion of a stress fracture in any athlete who is involved in a throwing, weightlifting, or upper extremity weight-bearing sport and presents with chronic pain in the upper extremity. Imaging should play an integral role in the work-up of these patients; if initial radiographs are unrevealing, further cross-sectional imaging should be strongly considered

OBJECTIVE: Although stress fractures are a source of significant morbidity in active populations, particularly among young female athletes, the causes of stress fractures have not been explored among females <17 years of age or in the general population. The purpose of this study was to examine correlates of stress fractures in a large, population-based, national, cohort study of preadolescent and adolescent girls.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of data from 5461 girls, 11 to 17 years of age, in the Growing Up Today Study, an ongoing longitudinal study of the children of registered femal

There have been no studies devoted exclusively to stress fractures in competitive athletes with immature skeletal systems so far. The object of this case series was to describe special features of stress fractures in athletes with immature skeletal systems, with special reference to sport-specific strain, diagnosis and treatment results. The study population was made up of 19 children and adolescents with a total of 21 stress fractures. The average observation period was 4.83 years [standard deviation (SD) 2.69] and the average age at diagnosis, 14.04 years (SD 4.7). The lower extremity was af
