Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder prevalence is high in children with gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) prevalence in children with gastroparesis (Gp) and/or functional dyspepsia (FD) is unknown. We aimed to identify ARFID prevalence and trajectory over 2 months in children with Gp, FD, and healthy children (HC) using two screening questionnaires. We also explored the frequency of a positive ARFID screen between those with/without delayed gastric emptying or abnormal fundic accommodation. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study conducted at an urban tertiary care hospital, patients ages 10-17 years with Gp or FD and age- and

Infesting Seaweeds as a Novel Functional Food: Analysis of Nutrients, Antioxidants and ACE Inhibitory Effects.

Globalization and climate change are both contributing to an increase in the number of potentially invasive algae in coastal areas. In terms of biodiversity and financial losses, the invasiveness of algae has become a significant issue in Orbetello Lagoon. Indeed, studies from the Tuscany Regional Agency for Environmental Protection show that the reduction in dissolved oxygen caused by algal diffusion is detrimental to fisheries and biodiversity. Considering that wakame and numerous other potentially invasive seaweeds are consumed as food in Asia, we assess the nutritional and nutraceutical qu

Immunomodulatory activity of semen Ziziphi Spinosae protein: a potential plant protein functional food raw material.

Semen Ziziphi Spinosae protein (SZSP) is a new plant protein resource with good food functional properties and health care function. However, the biological activity of SZSP has not been further studied, which greatly limits the development and utilization of SZSP in the food industry. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of SZSP on immunosuppressed mice and its inhibitory effect on immune-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The results demonstrated that SZSP remarkably improved the immunomodulatory secretion in serum (interleukin-2, tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], interferon

A novel alcohol steamed preparation from Gastrodia elata Blume: Pharmacological assessment of a functional food.

Rhizoma Gastrodia (Orchidaceae; Gastrodia elata Blume), the rhizome of Gastrodia elata Blume (GE), is traditionally used as both a medicinal and functional food, with proven efficacy in treating mental disorders. In traditional processing, GE is washed, steamed with water, dried, and sliced. In this study, a novel processing technology-alcohol steamed GE (AGE) was proposed as an alternative. Totally, 17 compounds were identified in fresh GE and AGE. Compared with fresh GE, the relative content of parishin A and parishin E decreased after alcohol steaming, whereas gastrodin (GAS), p-hydroxylben

Chemosensory function and food perception is affected in COPD, but unrelated to sarcopenia risk.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with advanced COPD often have difficulty maintaining sufficient dietary intake. Chemosensory function influences food choice and intake but is often overlooked in dietary assessment and intervention strategies. This study aimed to assess differences in chemosensory function and hedonic evaluation of food between patients with COPD and age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Additionally, a possible association between increased risk of sarcopenia or frailty and chemosensory impairments was explored. METHODS: We recruited 53 COPD patients (34 males, mean age 66.6

Functional foods: promising therapeutics for Nigerian Children with sickle cell diseases.

Sickle cell disease (SCD), also known as sickle cell anemia (SCA) is one of the structural hemoglobinopathies that occurs due to a single nucleotide mutation from GAG to GTG, which changes the amino acid of a β-globin chain of hemoglobin (Hb) from glutamate to valine. This singular mutation results to disorderliness in red blood cells (RBCs) with advent of changes in RBC morphology and other pathological conditions. In the 1980s, intermittent red blood cell transfusions, opioids, and penicillin prophylaxis were the only available therapy for SCA and were commonly reserved for acute, life threa

Filaggrin loss-of-function mutations are associated with food allergy in childhood and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Filaggrin is an epidermal protein that has a role in skin barrier function. Filaggrin loss-of-function (FLG-LOF) mutations are a significant risk factor for eczema and atopy, but their association with food allergy (FA) is less clear. OBJECTIVE: We explored the longitudinal relationship between 3 common FLG-LOF mutations and FA using the Isle of Wight birth cohort. METHODS: FA diagnosis was based on recognized allergic reactions within 4 hours after exposure to known food allergens. Food allergen sensitization (FAS) was identified by using skin prick tests conducted between 1 and

Functional foods and dietary supplements: products at the interface between pharma and nutrition.

It is increasingly recognized that most chronic diseases of concern today are multifactorial in origin. To combat such diseases and adverse health conditions, a treatment approach where medicines and nutrition complement each other may prove to be the most successful. Within nutrition, apart from (disease-related) dietetic regimes, an increasing number of functional foods and dietary supplements, each with their own health claim, are marketed. These food items are considered to be positioned between traditional foods and medicines at the so-called 'Pharma-Nutrition Interface'. This paper encom

Melanin-concentrating hormone functions in the nervous system: food intake and stress.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a cyclic neuropeptide, which centrally regulates food intake and stress. MCH induces food intake in rodents and, more generally, acts as an anabolic signal in energy regulation. In addition, MCH seems to be activatory on the stress axis. Two receptors for MCH in humans have very recently been characterised, namely, MCH-R1 and MCH-R2. MCH-R1 has received considerable attention, as potent and selective antagonists acting at that receptor display anxiolytic, antidepressant and/or anorectic properties. Feeding and affective disorders are both debilitating con

Applications of antioxidants in physiologically functional foods. Consumption, intake patterns, and exposure.

Despite the wide public and scientific interest in antioxidant nutrients and their roles in disease prevention, limited data are available to assess population consumption, individuals' intake patterns, and trends in exposure. This article reviews data on levels of these nutrients in the food supply, intake patterns from food and supplement use derived from national surveys, and trends in exposure. The food supply and intake data indicate that levels of vitamins E and C and the carotenoids in the diet have increased since the 1970s, but the increases are not consistent among all age groups. Di

Effect of food intake on cardiovascular control in patients with impaired autonomic function.

Food intake results in a variety of responses, with the autonomic nervous system playing an important role in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. In patients with autonomic failure, who have severe sympathetic impairment, food substantially lowers blood pressure even in the supine position. This is related to a marked increase in splanchnic blood flow, without compensatory changes in the rest of the circulation. Of the food components, glucose causes similar effects to food, while an isosmotic, isocaloric load of the inert carbohydrate, xylose, causes only a small fall in blood pressure. L

Functional Foods as Modulators of Epigenetic Mechanisms Affecting Metabolic Health in Adolescence.

Adolescence represents a critical window of metabolic plasticity, during which profound hormonal, neurobiological, and physiological remodelling increases susceptibility to nutritional exposures. In parallel with the rising prevalence of obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among young people, there is growing interest in the potential for functional food components to modulate epigenetic pathways that govern metabolic programming. This narrative review synthesises current evidence (2015-2025) from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase to
