Hypercementosis and concrescence of maxillary second molar with third molar: a case report and review of literature.

Concrescence signifies a rare developmental alteration, most commonly in maxillary molars, where two fully formed teeth with separate root canal structures are fused with cementum. Clinical detection is difficult due to lack of enamel involvement and radiographic detection may be challenging, as two dimensional images may be misdiagnosed as overlap, superimposition or close proximity of roots. Such a developmental anomaly can influence treatment outcomes for extraction, endodontic, periodontic, prosthodontic and orthodontic treatment. Legal complications could arise due to unexpected difficulti

Accuracy of three-dimensional printing for manufacturing replica teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a recent technological development that may play a significant role in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. It can be used to fabricate skull models or study models, as well as to make replica teeth in autotransplantation or tooth impaction cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of fabrication of replica teeth made by two types of 3D printing technologies. METHODS: Fifty extracted molar teeth were selected as samples. They were scanned to generate high-resolution 3D surface model stereolithography files. These files were convert

Abnormality in the Morphogenesis of Tooth Development and Relationship with Orthodontic Deformities and Treatment Approaches.

In the process of odontogenesis, a disturbance in the formation of the epithelium and mesenchyme can be observed and this can be manifested by atypical forms of dental development. Such biological phenomena with altered morphology are as follows: dens invaginatus (DI), dens evaginatus (DE), talon cusps, and double teeth (DT) or connate teeth (fusion and gemination). Patients with orthodontic anomalies who also exhibit teeth with morphogenetic disorders are presented in this article. Dens evaginatus and talon cusps pose orthodontic challenges in the treatment finishing phase. These reduce the p

Relationship between dental follicle, gubernacular canal and developmental theories in supernumerary teeth from different regions of the jaws.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the characteristics of dental follicle and gubernacular canal (GC) in supernumerary teeth from different regions of dental arches, using CBCT scans of non-syndromic patients, and associate with developmental theories. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sample was composed of CBCT scans of 408 intraosseous supernumerary teeth. The characteristics of the supernumerary teeth, the relationship of their follicular space with adjacent teeth, and the presence or absence of the GC were assessed. Chi-square tests were used to compare categorical variables among supernumerary teeth from differe

Denture flask fabrication using fused deposition modeling three-dimensional printing.

PURPOSE: This paper describes a method for making a customized denture flask using fused deposition modeling (FDM) by three-dimensional (3D) printing. We have proposed a new digital dental prosthesis using conventional dental base materials and artificial teeth. METHODS: Using the universal development system software, a denture-designed Standard Tessellation Language (STL) file and a denture flask STL file were superimposed, and the denture region was set as an empty space. After setting the offset value to 200μm between the denture base and teeth for artificial tooth positioning, the flask

Aberrantly elevated Wnt signaling is responsible for cementum overgrowth and dental ankylosis.

Vertebrate teeth are attached to the jawbones using a variety of methods but in mammals, a fibrous connection is the norm. This fibrous periodontal ligament (PDL) allows teeth to move in the jawbones in response to natural eruptive forces, mastication, and orthodontic tooth movement. In some disease states the PDL either calcifies or is replaced by a mineralized tissue and the result is ankylosis, where the tooth is fused to the alveolar bone. To understand how the PDL maintains this fibrous state, we examined a strain of mice in which tooth movement is arrested. DaβcatOt mice express a stabil

Complex dental anomalies in a belatedly diagnosed cleidocranial dysplasia patient.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare congenital disorder, typically characterized by persistently open skull sutures, aplastic or hypoplastic clavicles, and supernumerary teeth. Mutations in the gene encoding the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) protein are responsible for approximately two thirds of CCD patients. We report a 20-year-old CCD patient presenting not only with typical skeletal changes, but also complex dental anomalies. A previously undiagnosed odontoma, 14 supernumerary teeth, a cystic lesion, and previously unreported fused primary teeth were discovered on cone-be

The primary Maxillary Central Incisor in the Solitary Median Maxillary Central Incisor syndrome.

AIM: Solitary Median Maxillary Central Incisor (SMMCI) is a developmental anomaly in the permanent dentition with one single central incisor in the maxilla, positioned exactly in the midline. This condition has been associated with extra- and intraoral malformations in the frontonasal segment of the cranium and face. It is not known whether the centrally located permanent incisor is always preceded by a centrally located primary incisor. The aim was to analyse whether a permanent single central incisor in SMMCI is always preceded by a primary single central incisor and to study extra- and intr

Oral examination and radiographic evaluation of the dentition in wild cats from Namibia.

Feline tooth resorption has been widely reported in domestic cats and sporadically described in other felidae. The goal of the present study was to determine the prevalence of tooth resorption and to report other dental problems in a population of wild felidae. Observations of dental disorders and anomalies were made in skulls from 73 wild felidae (cheetahs, leopards, caracals, African wildcats, and lions) originating from Namibia. In addition, radiographs were taken in 43 cases to determine signs of bone and root pathology. Radiographs showed varying stages of tooth resorption in 16.0% of the

Traumatic injuries to permanent incisors: a case report.

A case report involving traumatized maxillary incisors is presented. The right central and lateral incisors were avulsed by direct trauma and were not found. The left central incisor was luxated and the left lateral incisor was fractured at the coronal portion. Placement of implant fixtures was selected as treatment to prevent resorption of alveolar bone and to maintain the integrity of intact adjacent teeth. The right incisors were replaced with two osseointegrated implants. The left central incisor was endodontically treated and a cast post and core was bonded into the root canal. All three

F-18 FDG PET/CT following dental extraction in a patient with head and neck cancer.

A 48-year-old man with squamous-cell carcinoma of the left tonsillar fossa and cervical lymph node metastases was being staged before radiation and chemotherapy. The patient had periodontal disease, and extraction of 2 teeth was performed before therapy. A staging PET/CT was performed 1 week after extraction. This case demonstrates increased FDG uptake at the extraction sites, which could be potentially mistaken for metastatic lesions, especially without the fused PET/CT images.

Fate of developing tooth buds located in relation to mandibular fractures in three infancy cases.

The fate of developing tooth buds located in relation to mandibular fractures was investigated in three infancy cases. Three infants, 2 girls and a boy, aged from 1 year and 5-months old to 2 years and 6-months old, were treated for dislocated mandibular fracture in the symphyseal region by manual reduction and fixation with a thermoforming splint and circumferential wiring under general anesthesia. Fracture healing was uneventful in all cases. A few years later, no obvious deformity of the jaw or malocclusion was observed; however, malformation of the crown was found in one of the permanent t

Survival of glass fiber post retained endodontically treated teeth preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The use of fiber reinforced composite post in restoration of endodontically treated teeth have been found to prevent irreparable root fracture and the fact that the post is bonded to the root giving a monobloc restoration, also strengthens the tooth. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the survival of endodontically treated teeth with compromised coronal tooth structure restored with glass-fiber posts after 6 months. METHODOLOGY: Twenty endodontically treated teeth with less than 50% coronal tooth structure, were assessed and restored with glass fiber reinforced post cemented

Orthodontic extrusion in the transitional dentition: a simple technique.

Extrusion of teeth may be necessary in cases of delayed eruption, primary retention, traumatically intruded teeth, or subgingivally fractured teeth. Removable appliances are advantageous, as anchorage is not as tooth-dependant as in the case of fixed appliances. They are cost-effective, operator friendly, and a valuable treatment option to consider in cases where extrusion of anterior teeth in the transitional dentition is necessary. The purpose of this paper was to describe a simple, cost-effective technique using a removable appliance for extrusion of incisors in the transitional dentition.
