Antibiotic Resistance and Phylogenetic Diversity of Escherichia coli Isolated from Hospital Wastewater in Gabon.

Hospital wastewater represents a critical hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), serving both as an environmental reservoir and a transmission pathway for multidrug-resistant bacteria into receiving ecosystems. The intense antibiotic selective pressure within healthcare facilities promotes the emergence, persistence and amplification of resistant strains, posing substantial risks to public health and environmental integrity. This study aimed to characterize Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates recovered from hospital wastewater effluents in multiple cities across G

Molecular Epidemiology of Skin-Dwelling Filariae and Risk Factors for Mansonella streptocerca Infection, Gabon.

Mansonella streptocerca is a species of neglected skin-dwelling filarial nematode parasite with scarce epidemiologic data from Central Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1,007 adults from 51 rural and semiurban communities in Gabon to update prevalence estimates and identify risk factors. Molecular analyses by quantitative PCR detected filarial DNA in 18.3% of skin snips; M. streptocerca predominated (14.2%), and Onchocerca volvulus (3.4%) occurred focally in a single rural area. Blood-dwelling parasite species such as Loa loa, M. perstans, and Mansonella sp. "DEUX" were rarely d

Immunological profiles associated with distinct parasitemic states in volunteers undergoing malaria challenge in Gabon.

Controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) using cryopreserved non-attenuated Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites (PfSPZ) offers a unique opportunity to investigate naturally acquired immunity (NAI). By analyzing blood samples from 5 malaria-naïve European and 20 African adults with lifelong exposure to malaria, before, 5, and 11 days after direct venous inoculation (DVI) with SanariaR PfSPZ Challenge, we assessed the immunological patterns associated with control of microscopic and submicroscopic parasitemia. All (5/5) European individuals developed parasitemia as defined by thick blood smear (T

Distinct loiasis infection states and associated clinical and hematological manifestations in patients from Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Loiasis-a filarial disease endemic in Central and West Africa-is increasingly recognized as significant individual and public health concern. While the understanding of the disease characteristics remains limited, significant morbidity and excess mortality have been demonstrated. Here, we characterize clinical and hematological findings in a large cohort from Gabon. METHODS: Loiasis-related clinical manifestations and microfilaremia, hemoglobin and differential blood counts were recorded prospectively during a cross-sectional survey. For analysis, participants were categorized int

HIV protease resistance mutations in patients receiving second-line antiretroviral therapy in Libreville, Gabon.

INTRODUCTION: In 2022, the WHO reported that 29.8 million people around the world were living with HIV (PLHIV) and receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART), including 25‌ 375 people in Gabon (54% of all those living with HIV in the country). The literature reports a frequency of therapeutic failure with first-line antiretrovirals (ARVs) of between 20% and 82%. Unfortunately, data relating to the failure of second-line ARVs are scarce in Gabon. This study aims to determine the profiles of HIV drug resistance mutations related to protease inhibitors in Gabon. METHODOLOGY: Plasma from 84 PLHIV r

Parasitic infections during pregnancy in Gabon affect glycosylation patterns of maternal and child antibodies.

Antibody glycosylation patterns can affect antibody functionality and thereby contribute to protection against invading pathogens. During pregnancy, maternal antibodies can be transferred through the placenta and contribute to modulating both the mother's and her child's immune responses. Although several studies of IgG glycosylation during pregnancy have been carried out, very few cohorts studied were from sub-Saharan Africa, where exposure to microorganisms and parasites is high. In Lambaréné, Gabon, 106 pregnant women in their third trimester were enrolled into this study. At enrolment, uri

Streptococcus agalactiae Serotype Distribution and Antimicrobial Susceptibility in Pregnant Women in Gabon, Central Africa.

Neonatal invasive disease due to Streptococcus agalactiae is life threatening and preventive strategies suitable for resource limited settings are urgently needed. Protective coverage of vaccine candidates based on capsular epitopes will relate to local epidemiology of S. agalactiae serotypes and successful management of critical infections depends on timely therapy with effective antibiotics. This is the first report on serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of S. agalactiae in pregnant women from a Central African region. Serotypes V, III, and Ib accounted for 88/109 (81%) se

Cross-species transmission of simian foamy virus to humans in rural Gabon, Central Africa.

In order to characterize simian foamy retroviruses (SFVs) in wild-born nonhuman primates (NHPs) in Gabon and to investigate cross-species transmission to humans, we obtained 497 NHP samples, composed of 286 blood and 211 tissue (bush meat) samples. Anti-SFV antibodies were found in 31 of 286 plasma samples (10.5%). The integrase gene sequence was found in 38/497 samples, including both blood and tissue samples, with novel SFVs in several Cercopithecus species. Of the 78 humans, mostly hunters, who had been bitten or scratched by NHPs, 19 were SFV seropositive, with 15 cases confirmed by PCR. A

Presence of circulating anodic antigen in serum of Schistosoma intercalatum-infected patients from Gabon.

The presence of the schistosome circulating anodic antigen (CAA) in serum of Schistosoma intercalatum-infected patients from Gabon has been investigated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blood samples were collected from 10 endemic controls, 29 patients which excreted viable S. intercalatum eggs in rectal mucosa and stool, six persons in which only non-viable eggs were found in rectal biopsy specimens and one person in which besides non-viable eggs a small number of viable eggs was found in the rectal biopsy specimen. CAA, a genus-specific antigen, could be demonstrated in 58

Distribution and abundance of hematophagous flies (Glossinidae, Stomoxys, and Tabanidae) in two national parks of Gabon.

In order to minimize risks of pathogen transmission with the development of ecotourism in Gabon, a seasonal inventory has been performed in five contrasted biotopes in Ivindo (INP) and Moukalaba-Doudou (MDNP) National Parks. A total of 10,033 hematophagous flies were captured. The Glossinidae, with six different species identified, was the most abundant group and constitutes about 60% of the captured flies compared to the Stomoxys (6 species also identified) and Tabanidae with 28% and 12%, respectively. The Glossinidae showed a higher rate of capture in primary forest and in research camps. In

Haemorrhagic fever in Gabon. I. Incidence of Lassa, Ebola and Marburg viruses in Haut-Ogooué.

A serological enquiry aimed at determining the incidence of infection with Lassa, Ebola and Marburg viruses was conducted on the human population of the region of Haut-Ogooué (Gabon) and on primates. The results, obtained by the indirect immunofluorescence technique, showed that more than 6% of the human population had had contact with Ebola virus but no antibodies against Marburg or Lassa viruses were found. Most sera reacted to an Ebola antigen from a Zairian strain, but showed little or no reaction to an antigen from a Sudanese strain.

Molecular characterization of filarial infections and their associated risk factors in rural community of Southeastern Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Filarial infections continue to represent a considerable public health challenge in resource-limited communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In Gabon, the implementation of effective control strategies, such as mass drug administration (MDA), is hindered by a lack of contemporary data on the local distribution, molecular diversity, and associated risk factors of these infections, particularly in rural areas where Loa loa co-endemicity poses a risk of severe adverse events. This study aimed to molecularly characterize filarial species and determine the prevalence, associated risk factors
