Biological effects of gamma-ray sterilization on 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal: An in vitro study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Selecting the sterilization method is important because sterilization can alter the surface chemistry of implant materials, including zirconia, and influence their cellular biocompatibility. Studies on the biological effects of sterilization on implant materials are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of gamma-ray irradiated 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) compared with unirradiated titanium, 3Y-TZP, and pure gold. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens each of commercially pure

A comparison of machine learning methods to classify radioactive elements using prompt-gamma-ray neutron activation data.

The detection of illicit radiological materials is critical to establishing a robust second line of defence in nuclear security. Neutron-capture prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) can be used to detect multiple radioactive materials across the entire Periodic Table. However, long detection times and a high rate of false positives pose a significant hindrance in the deployment of PGAA-based systems to identify the presence of illicit substances in nuclear forensics. In the present work, six different machine-learning algorithms were developed to classify radioactive elements based on the P

Retinal regeneration after injury induced by gamma-ray irradiation during early embryogenesis in medaka, Oryzias latipes.

PURPOSE: Zebrafish, a small fish model, exhibits a multipotent ability for retinal regeneration after damage throughout its lifetime. Compared with zebrafish, birds and mammals exhibit such a regenerative capacity only during the embryonic period, and this capacity decreases with age. In medaka, another small fish model that has also been used extensively in biological research, the retina's inner nuclear layer (INL) failed to regenerate after injury in the hatchling at eight days postfertilization (dpf). We characterized the regenerative process of the embryonic retina when the retinal injury

Transmission of gamma-ray-induced unstable chromosomal aberrations through successive mitotic divisions in human lymphocytes in vitro.

Transmission of unstable chromosomal aberrations through successive mitotic divisions M1-M4 was analysed in 3 Gy gamma-ray-irradiated G0 human lymphocytes in vitro, harvested at 50, 72 and 96 h. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation and subsequently the fluorescence plus Giemsa (FPG) method allowed the cell cycle status of each cell scored to be ascertained. Higher dicentric frequencies were observed in cells within the same post-irradiation division derived from extended culture times, indicating either a delay in cell cycle progression of aberrant cells or different lymphocyte sub-populatio

The 60Co gamma ray dose-response for chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes analysed by FISH; applicability to biological dosimetry.

PURPOSE: To investigate the in vitro dose-response for 60Co irradiated human lymphocytes assayed by FISH, and to consider how this may be applied to retrospective dosimetry. METHOD: Blood was irradiated with doses in the range 0.25-4.0 Gy. Cultured lymphocytes were scored for all stable and unstable aberrations involving painted chromosomes 2, 3 and 5 and, in addition, all unstable aberrations in the counterstained chromosomes. A pancentromeric probe was included. RESULTS: The relative numbers of painted and full genome dicentrics agreed well with the Lucas hypothesis for calculating genome

Excision of ultraviolet and gamma ray products of the 5,6-dihydroxy-dihydrothymine type by nuclear preperations of xeroderma pigmentosum cells.

Monomeric products of the 5,6-dihydroxy-dihydrothymine type are produced in the DNA by both ultraviolet and ionizing radiations. The capacity of nuclear preparations from normal and Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) cells (Complementation groups A, B, C and D) to excise such products from ultraviolet or gamma-irradiated T7DNA was comparable and was independent of radiation induced strand breaks.

Stereotactic Gamma Ray Radiosurgery to the Centromedian and Parafascicular Complex of the Thalamus for Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Complex Pain Syndromes.

Introduction We report our initial series of patients treated with radiosurgery to the Centromedian (CM) and Parafascicular (Pfc) Complex (CM-Pf) of the contralateral thalamus mainly for trigeminal neuralgia that had failed most known forms of conventional treatments. The coordinates were co-registered to a three-dimensional atlas of the thalamus in order to have a better comprehension of isodose curves distribution. Methods A fully automated rotating gamma ray unit was used to deliver a high dose of radiation (140 Gy) using a 4-mm collimator to the CM-Pf of the contralateral thalamus in 14 pa

[Defect of preferential repair of gamma-ray-induced single-strand breaks in transcribed DNA in ataxia-telangiectasia cells].

Transcriptionally activity-dependent heterogeneity of gamma-induced DNA single-strand break repair in ataxia-telangiectasia cells has been investigated. It is found that in AT cells no increased induction of damage in the c-myc gene compares with normal human fibroblasts. At the same time an evident defect of preferential accelerated repair of single-strand breaks in the c-myc gene was observed. DNA single-strand breaks repair in human satellite III and total DNA single-strand breaks in c-myc gene in AT cells correlate with increased radiosensitivity of cells.

Use of a simple body-monitoring system in a pilot study on workers exposed to unsealed gamma-ray emitting material.

A portable body-monitoring system developed by the board uses two detectors, one for whole-body measurements and one for thyroid measurements. It can detect most commonly used gamma-ray emitting nuclides down to levels below those of interest for radiological protection purposes. The system has been used at 11 establishments including hospitals, universities, and research laboratories. Measurements have been made on 109 workers exposed to unsealed gamma-ray emitting material. Some activity other than that due to naturally occurring 40potassium was detected in a substantial proportion (30%) of

Resistance in cattle to Fasciola hepatica induced by gamma-ray attenuated larvae: results from a controlled field trial.

A significant resistance to natural infection in the field was obtained in calves inoculated with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica attenuated at a gamma-irradiation level of 3 Krad. The mean fluke burden of vaccinated calves was 29 per cent of that of the controls. The resistance was reflected not only in reduced parasite burdens and low faecal egg counts, but also in the stability of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase levels of the vaccinated calves compared with non-vaccinated controls. The gamma-ray dose of 3 Krad did not prevent a small proportion of the irradiated larvae reaching and maturing

Green synthesis of gamma rays-induced melanin-based bismuth oxide nanoparticles for evaluation of the antibacterial and anti-virulence activities against extra-intestinal pathogenic bacteria.

The rise of microorganisms that are resistant to drugs is one of the significant challenges facing the health sector. The need to identify effective alternatives facing bacterial diseases is significantly highlighted. Nanomaterials have the potential to be a game-changing weapon in the battle against infectious diseases. Melanin, with the assistance of different doses of gamma rays, successfully produced highly stable Bi2O3 NPs. The most effective dose was 40 kGy. Bi2O3 NPs were characterized using FTIR, XRD, DLS/zeta potential, and TEM. In this study, the antibacterial efficacy of Bi2O3 NPs v

Suppression of DNA-PK by RNAi has different quantitative effects on telomere dysfunction and mutagenesis in human lymphoblasts treated with gamma rays or HZE particles.

Basic to virtually all relevant biological effects of ionizing radiation is the underlying damage produced in DNA and the subsequent cellular processing of such damage. The damage can be qualitatively different for different kinds of radiations, and the genetics of the biological systems exposed can greatly affect damage processing and ultimate outcome--the biological effect of concern. The accurate repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) is critical for the maintenance of genomic integrity and function. Incorrect repair of such lesions results in chromosomal rearrangements and mutations tha

Evaluation of tilapia skin (Oreochromis niloticus) frozen, frog skin (Rana catesbeiana), and tilapia skin (Oreochromis niloticus) sterilized with gamma rays dressings, in equine skin wound healing.

BACKGROUND: Skin wounds are common in horses due to species-specific behavioral responses. Equine skin morphology, vascularization, and inflammatory responses to wounds are comparable to those in humans, supporting the translational relevance of equine wound-healing studies. Investigating biomaterials such as tilapia and frog skin may improve wound management. This study demonstrated that sterilized tilapia and frog skin exhibit promising wound-healing properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Macroscopic, microscopic, and thermographic aspects of second-intention wound healing were compared in six

Identification of radical structures on 1-pentamethylbenzyl-3-ethylimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide and 1,3-bis(pentamethylbenzyl)-4,5-dimethylbenzimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide exposed to gamma rays: an EPR study.

1-Pentamethylbenzyl-3-ethylimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide and 1,3-bis(pentamethylbenzyl)-4,5dimethylbenzimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide and their Ag+ complexes were synthesized and their polycrystal forms were produced by recrystallization in dichloromethane/Et2 O solvent system. Structural determinations were carried out by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR with a Varian 400 NMR system using tetramethylsilane as internal standard and CDCl3 as solvent. The disappearance of acidic N-heterocyclic carbene proton showed the formation of Ag(I) complexes. Also, elemental analyses were carried out. Electron paramagnetic
