Developmental neurobiology of cerebellar and Basal Ganglia connections.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of mixed phenotypes of Early Onset Ataxia (EOA) with comorbid dystonia has shifted the pathogenetic concept from the cerebellum towards the interconnected cerebellar motor network. This paper on EOA with comorbid dystonia (EOA-dystonia) explores the conceptual relationship between the motor phenotype and the cortico-basal-ganglia-ponto-cerebellar network. METHODS: In EOA-dystonia, we reviewed anatomic-, genetic- and biochemical-studies on the comorbidity between ataxia and dystonia. RESULTS: In a clinical EOA cohort, the prevalence of dystonia was over 60%. Bo

Seizures and Basal Ganglia Calcification Caused by Hypoparathyroidism.

Seizures, not a typical feature of hypoparathyroidism, may present along with myalgia and tetany in patients of hypoparathyroidism. Thorough history and examination, derangement of biochemical parameters such as hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and inappropriately low levels of parathyroid hormone, along with basal ganglia calcification as seen on imaging, lead to the diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism in a 10-year-old child who presented to us. Treatment with calcium and active vitamin D significantly improved his condition. In this report, we discuss the presentation and treatment of hypoparath

Basal ganglia volume and shape in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Reward-centred models have proposed that anomalies in the basal ganglia circuitry that underlies reward learning and habit formation perpetuate anorexia nervosa (AN). The present study aimed to investigate the volume and shape of key basal ganglia regions, including the bilateral caudate, putamen, nucleus accumbens (NAcc), and globus pallidus in AN. METHODS: The present study combined data from two existing studies resulting in a sample size of 46 women with AN and 56 age-matched healthy comparison (HC) women. Group differences in volume and shape of the regions of interest were e

Pulmonary Vein Ganglia Are Remodeled in the Diabetic Heart.

Background Cardiac autonomic neuropathy is thought to cause adverse cardiovascular effects in diabetes mellitus. Pulmonary vein ganglia ( PVG ), which have been implicated in normal and abnormal heart rhythm regulation, have not been fully investigated in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). We examined the functional and anatomical effects of T1D on PVG and studied the details of T1D-induced remodeling on the PVG structure and function. Methods and Results We used a mouse model of T1D (Akita mouse), immunofluorescence, isolated Langendorff-perfused hearts, and mathematical simulations to explore t

A basal ganglia circuit for evaluating action outcomes.

The basal ganglia, a group of subcortical nuclei, play a crucial role in decision-making by selecting actions and evaluating their outcomes. While much is known about the function of the basal ganglia circuitry in selection, how these nuclei contribute to outcome evaluation is less clear. Here we show that neurons in the habenula-projecting globus pallidus (GPh) in mice are essential for evaluating action outcomes and are regulated by a specific set of inputs from the basal ganglia. We find in a classical conditioning task that individual mouse GPh neurons bidirectionally encode whether an out

Anatomy of the nerves and ganglia of the aortic plexus in males.

It is well accepted that the aortic plexus is a network of pre- and post-ganglionic nerves overlying the abdominal aorta, which is primarily involved with the sympathetic innervation to the mesenteric, pelvic and urogenital organs. Because a comprehensive anatomical description of the aortic plexus and its connections with adjacent plexuses are lacking, these delicate structures are prone to unintended damage during abdominal surgeries. Through dissection of fresh, frozen human cadavers (n = 7), the present study aimed to provide the first complete mapping of the nerves and ganglia of the aort

Alarin in cranial autonomic ganglia of human and rat.

Extrinsic and intrinsic sources of the autonomic nervous system contribute to choroidal innervation, thus being responsible for the control of choroidal blood flow, aqueous humor production or intraocular pressure. Neuropeptides are involved in this autonomic control, and amongst those, alarin has been recently introduced. While alarin is present in intrinsic choroidal neurons, it is not clear if these are the only source of neuronal alarin in the choroid. Therefore, we here screened for the presence of alarin in human cranial autonomic ganglia, and also in rat, a species lacking intrinsic cho

Intraosseous Ganglia: a series of 17 treated cases.

BACKGROUND: Intraosseous ganglion is a cystic lesion that contains gelatinous material, most often occurs in middle-aged patients, and is regarded as similar to soft-tissue ganglion. The etiology is unknown, but association with degenerative joint disease has been considered. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At a single institute, 17 patients (8 men, 9 women) with a mean age of 48.9 years (22-72 years) were surgically treated for an intraosseous ganglion. The lesions were located in 9 long bones (5 tibiae, 2 humeri, 1 ulna, and 1 femur); 4 flat bones (2 scapulae, 2 ilia); and 4 small bones (2 scaphoid,

Tic disorders: what happens in the basal ganglia?

Motor tics are brief, repetitive, involuntary movements that interfere with behavior and appear in multiple neural disorders, most notably, Tourette syndrome. Converging evidence from different lines of research point to the involvement of the corticobasal ganglia system in tics, but the neural mechanism underlying motor tics is largely unknown. An animal model directly linking basal ganglia dysfunction and motor tics indicated that local disinhibition within the basal ganglia input structure, the striatum, induces the appearance of motor tics in both rats and monkeys. Recordings of neuronal a

Stereotactic microdialysis of the basal ganglia in Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an efficacious treatment in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease, yet the mechanisms of STN DBS are poorly understood. The aims of this study were to develop a useful method for studying neurotransmitter alterations during DBS and for the pharmacokinetics of L-dopa in brain tissue. Ten patients with Parkinson's disease participated, whereof two had no previous L-dopa medication. The electrodes and catheters were placed using MRI-guided stereotaxic targeting. Two microdialysis probes were placed, one in the right internal gl

Histochemical localization of caldesmon in the CNS and ganglia of the mouse.

The author has recently reported the distribution of the cytoskeleton-associated protein caldesmon in spleen and lymph nodes detected with different antibodies against caldesmon (J Histochem Cytochem 58:183-193, 2010). Here the author reports the distribution of caldesmon in the CNS and ganglia of the mouse using the same antibodies. Western blot analysis of mouse brain and spinal cord showed the preponderance of l-caldesmon and suggested at least two l-caldesmon isoforms in the brain. Immunostaining revealed the predominant reactivity of smooth muscle cells and cells resembling pericytes of m

Treatment of dorsal wrist ganglia by transfixation technique.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion is one of the common lesions seen in minor surgical practice. Treatment of dorsal wrist ganglia varies from simple reassurance to excision and advanced endoscopic excision. Irrespective of the treatment modality, recurrence is a common problem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study evaluates results of 40 wrist ganglia treated by using the transfixation technique. RESULTS: Out of 40 cases included in this study 38 were completely cured of the symptoms giving a success rate of 95 percent, recurrence was seen in one patient and skin necrosis secondary to tight gauze piece was

[A boy with hypomyelination with atrophy of the basal ganglia and cerebellum].

Hypomyelination with atrophy of the basal ganglia and cerebellum (H-ABC) is a rare leukoencephalopathy first described by van der Knaap in 2002. Diffuse cerebral hypomyelination and atrophy of the basal ganglia and cerebellum characterize H-ABC. We report a 9-year-old Japanese boy with H-ABC who had been suspected to have Pelizaeus Merzbacher disease. Brain MRI revealed delayed myelination, however, no other remarkable abnormal laboratory findings were found. PLP1 gene mutation was not detected and he had no nystagmus. He was diagnosed as having H-ABC at the age of 8 years because of supratent

A review of the thoracic splanchnic nerves and celiac ganglia.

Anatomical variation of the thoracic splanchnic nerves is as diverse as any structure in the body. Thoracic splanchnic nerves are derived from medial branches of the lower seven thoracic sympathetic ganglia, with the greater splanchnic nerve comprising the more cranial contributions, the lesser the middle branches, and the least splanchnic nerve usually T11 and/or T12. Much of the early anatomical research of the thoracic splanchnic nerves revolved around elucidating the nerve root level contributing to each of these nerves. The celiac plexus is a major interchange for autonomic fibers, receiv

Dysfunction of the basal ganglia, but not the cerebellum, impairs kinaesthesia.

Precise knowledge about limb position and orientation is essential for the ability of the nervous system to plan and control voluntary movement. While it is well established that proprioceptive signals from peripheral receptors are necessary for sensing limb position and motion, it is less clear which supraspinal structures mediate the signals that ultimately lead to the conscious awareness of limb position (kinaesthesia). Recent functional imaging studies have revealed that the cerebellum, but not the basal ganglia, are involved in sensory processing of proprioceptive information induced by p

Seizures and the basal ganglia: a review of the clinical data.

This article attempts an overview of the clinical and electrophysiological evidence supporting the involvement of the basal ganglia in epileptic seizures. In contrast to animal data, evidence for a role of these structures in human epilepsies is lacking. However, from the theoretical point of view, it remains conceivable that, given their strong interconnectivity, basal ganglia could be functionally linked to the cerebral cortex during an epileptic seizure. Several clinical ictal aspects have been suggested to be compatible with the involvement of basal ganglia, namely, ictal dystonic posturin

Arthroscopic findings in patients with painful wrist ganglia.

The aetiology of painful dorsal wrist ganglia remains obscure. In a prospective study we investigated the link between a painful dorsal wrist ganglion and wrist joint abnormality with wrist arthroscopy before excision of the ganglion. Of 16 wrists arthroscoped 12 were abnormal, 10 had an abnormal scapholunate joint, and two had abnormal lunatetriquetral joints. We think that painful dorsal wrist ganglia, like popliteal cysts in the knee, are markers of underlying joint abnormalities. Surgeons who treat painful ganglia should be aware of a possible underlying cause so that they can target treat

The motor circuit of the human basal ganglia reconsidered.

The standard model of human basal ganglia organization was introduced in the 1980s on the basis of animal experiments and clinical experience of various human motor disorders. This paper reviews evidence from various sources which suggests that this standard model only incompletely accounts for aspects of basal ganglia function, and thus requires modification.

Hypotensive hemorrhagic necrosis in basal ganglia and brainstem.

Hypotensive hemorrhagic necrosis of the basal ganglia and brainstem has only occasionally been described. Three such cases are reported. Cardiac arrest had occurred in all cases, and it took at least 1 hour to restore adequate circulation. The patients remained comatose for 2 days to 2 weeks until death. Persistent hypotension causing ischemia in the distribution of deep perforating arteries is considered to have been the key underlying mechanism. Hemorrhage is thought to have been caused by extravasation of red blood cells through damaged blood vessels.
