A comprehensive study of the abdominal ganglia part 3: An overview of the most commonly observed ganglion patterns.

Chronic pain from untreatable abdominal cancers or pancreatitis can severely decrease an individual's quality of life due to accompanying neuropathic pain, the most difficult pain mechanism to treat. Current treatment modalities focus on peripheral block or neurolysis procedures of the sympathetic ganglia in an attempt to curb the pain and improve quality of life. Reports indicated that these treatments are ineffective with patients either experiencing no relief or return the pain in a few weeks. The aim of this study was to investigate the location, macro- and microscopic morphology, and inte

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor stimulates fiber formation and survival in cultured neurons from peripheral autonomic ganglia.

Human recombinant glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) was tested for its ability to stimulate fiber formation and neuron survival in primary cultures of peripheral ganglia dissected from the chicken embryo. GDNF, first characterized by its actions on central nervous system (CNS) neurons, had a marked stimulatory effect on fiber outgrowth in sympathetic and ciliary ganglia. Weaker responses were evoked in sensory spinal and nodose ganglia and in the ganglion of Remak. In addition, survival of neurons from the sympathetic and ciliary ganglia was stimulated by GDNF at 50 ng/ml. The

Video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathetic ramicotomy for hyperhidrosis--a way to reduce the complications.

Endoscopic resectional surgery of sympathetic nerves is now the most acceptable method to treat palmar hyperhidrosis, though the resection of the sympathetic trunk and ganglia can result in the irreversible compensatory hyperhidrosis. The ideal way to treat the palmar hyperhidrosis, without the undesirable complication of the compensatory hyperhidrosis, is still pending. We adapt endoscopic cutting of the second and third sympathetic rami without injury to the sympathetic ganglia and trunk, and find that it is a good way to reduce the complications. Most importantly, it has a cure rate compara

Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies, autonomic nerve antibodies and autonomic neuropathy in diabetic patients.

To clarify whether GAD-ab are associated with diabetic autonomic neuropathy and/or complement fixing antibodies against sympathetic ganglia, adrenal medulla, and vagus nerve, we examined 133 diabetic patients (95 with IDDM). GAD-ab were determined by a radioligand binding assay using in vitro expression of recombinant GAD-65 whereas sympathetic ganglia antibodies, adrenal medulla antibodies, vagus nerve, and ICA were evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence assays. Autonomic nerve function was evaluated by objective tests (heart rate reactions to deep breathing and to tilt). In the total mater

The effects of clipping on thoracic sympathetic nerve in rabbits: early and late histopathological findings.

BACKGROUND: The clipping of the thoracic sympathetic nerve, which has been a technique used for approximately the past 10 years, has rapidly become popular because of its "bring-back" claim. However, the information regarding the mechanism behind this claim is based on investigator's comments and has not been proven by objective research, such as the histopathological examination of the clipped nerve and/or ganglion. We aimed to evaluate sympathetic regeneration and degeneration after clip removal. METHODS: The rabbits were divided into two groups with six rabbits per group. For the first gro

Anti-arrhythmic targeting of sympathetic stellate ganglion P2X3 receptors.

Sympathetic hyperactivity associated with many primary cardiovascular diseases is pro-arrhythmic and a key contributor to sudden cardiac death. Surgically removing the sympathetic stellate ganglion has demonstrated therapeutic potential in minimising cardiac arrhythmia, but there are off-target risks prompting the need for more site-specific non-invasive approaches. Here we hypothesised that P2X3 purinergic receptors (P2X3R) may be a therapeutic target and play a role in the excessive sympathetic drive to the heart in cardiovascular disease. We investigated the role of P2X3R in the sympathetic

[Microfluorimetric study of adrenergic structures in nerve plexuses of the pelvic cavity of the normal and decentralized cat].

Microfluorimetric technique was used to study catecholamine concentration in small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells and in adrenergic fibres of the pelvic plexus ganglia and intramural ganglia of the cat urinary bladder and rectum in control and following sympathetic and parasympathetic denervation. Two types of SIF-cells were studied: cells of the first type contained catecholamines and those of the second type--serotonin. Parasympathetic denervation resulted in an increase of SIF-cells which exhibited serotonin fluorescence, and in more intense fluorescence of adrenergic fibres in the pelvi

Neuropilins define distinct populations of neural crest cells.

BACKGROUND: Neural crest cells (NCCs) are a transient embryonic cell type that give rise to a wide spectrum of derivatives, including neurons and glia of the sensory and autonomic nervous system, melanocytes and connective tissues in the head. Lineage-tracing and functional studies have shown that trunk NCCs migrate along two distinct paths that correlate with different developmental fates. Thus, NCCs migrating ventrally through the anterior somite form sympathetic and sensory ganglia, whereas NCCs migrating dorsolaterally form melanocytes. Although the mechanisms promoting migration along the

Electrophysiological Investigation of the Subcellular Fine Tuning of Sympathetic Neurons by Hydrogen Sulfide.

H2S is well-known as hypotensive agent, whether it is synthetized endogenously or administered systemically. Moreover, the H2S donor NaHS has been shown to inhibit vasopressor responses triggered by stimulation of preganglionic sympathetic fibers. In contradiction with this latter result, NaHS has been reported to facilitate transmission within sympathetic ganglia. To resolve this inconsistency, H2S and NaHS were applied to primary cultures of dissociated sympathetic ganglia to reveal how this gasotransmitter might act at different subcellular compartments of such neurons. At the somatodendrit

Sensory innervation of the lumbar dura mater passing through the sympathetic trunk in rats.

STUDY DESIGN: Sensory innervation of the lumbar dura mater passing through the sympathetic trunk was investigated by neuronal tracing and immunohistochemical methods. OBJECTIVE: To assess an anatomic basis indicating that sympathetic block in the higher lumbar region is effective for patients with low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Low back pain is elicited by disorder or mechanical stimulation of the lumbar dura mater. Clinically, the authors often have observed patients in whom root block at the responsible level or sympathetic block at the higher level could relieve low back pain.

Anatomic Variation of Rami Communicantes in the Upper Thoracic Sympathetic Chain: A Human Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is secondary to over activation of the sympathetic nervous system and surgical sympathectomy is the treatment of choice when other modalities have failed. This study investigated anatomic variation in the upper thoracic sympathetic chain and associated rami communicantes among cadaveric specimens. It considers the implications of these findings on surgical techniques to treat hyperhidrosis. METHODS: The upper 4 thoracic sympathetic ganglia, intercostal nerves, and connecting rami were dissected, measured and mapped in 40 sides of 20 adult human cadavers. Ganglia loca

Involvement of the peripheral nervous system in synucleinopathies, tauopathies and other neurodegenerative proteinopathies of the brain.

Involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is relatively common in some neurodegenerative proteinopathies of the brain and may be pathogenetically and diagnostically important. In Parkinson's disease, neuronal alpha-synuclein aggregates are distributed throughout the nervous system, including the central nervous system (CNS), sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system, cardiac and pelvic plexuses, submandibular gland, adrenal medulla and skin. The pathological process may target the PNS and CNS at the same time. In multiple system atrophy, numerous glial cytoplasmic inclusions compose

Satellite Glial Cells: No Longer the Most Overlooked Glia.

Many glial biologists consider glia the neglected cells of the nervous system. Among all the glia of the central and peripheral nervous system, satellite glia may be the most often overlooked. Satellite glial cells (SGCs) are located in ganglia of the cranial nerves and the peripheral nervous system. These small cells surround the cell bodies of neurons in the trigeminal ganglia (TG), spiral ganglia, nodose and petrosal ganglia, sympathetic ganglia, and dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Essential SGC features include their intimate connections with the associated neurons, their small size, and their

The anatomy of the lumbar sympathetic trunks in man (with special reference to the question of regeneration after sympathectomy).

Although possible to decentralize the sympathetic outflow to the leg, below the knee, by resecting only the third lumbar sympathetic ganglion, the likelihood of restoration of normal vasoconstrictor activity warrants a more extensive resection to include at least the second and third lumbar ganglia, and preferably the second, third, and fourth lumbar ganglia. When cross-over fibers are suspected or demonstrated following unilateral sympathectomy, the denervation should include the fourth and fifth lumbar ganglia. The first lumbar ganglion should be spared at least unilaterally if interference

The Lumbar Sympathetic Trunk and Its Branching Variability: Relevance for Clinical and Interventional Strategies.

Precision medicine relies on a thorough understanding of lumbar sympathetic anatomy and its branches to elucidate related pathophysiology and improve treatment of conditions such as low back pain, lumbopelvic pain, and vascular autonomic disorders affecting the lower limbs. This study aims to expand knowledge of fetal lumbar sympathetic anatomy by providing a detailed description and systematic classification of the communicating branches, their specific distribution to each lumbar spinal nerve, and the origin of lumbar splanchnic nerves. The lumbar and retroperitoneal regions of 25 human fetu

Differential expression of the p75 nerve growth factor receptor in glia and neurons of the rat dorsal root ganglia after peripheral nerve transection.

Sympathetic nerve terminals on blood vessels within the dorsal root ganglia sprout after sciatic nerve lesions in the rat. The mechanism underlying this phenomenon is not clear, but might be predicted to involve nerve growth factor or its homologs because these factors are known to trigger collateral sprouting of undamaged sympathetic noradrenergic terminals. We have found that sciatic nerve lesions lead to a decreased expression of neuronal p75, the low-affinity receptor for the neurotrophins, but an increased expression of glial p75 in ipsilateral dorsal root ganglia. Intriguingly, the incre

Brainstem-type Lewy body disease presenting with progressive autonomic failure and lethargy.

The authors report an autopsy case characterized by progressive lethargy and autonomic failure with a distinctive pattern of occurrence of Lewy bodies. Autonomic dysfunction such as sleep apnea, orthostatic hypotension, dysuria, and hypohidrosis predominated with lethargy, whereas parkinsonism was not apparent. Numerous Lewy bodies were widely evident microscopically in brainstem nuclei and the intermediolateral cell columns of the spinal cord, as well as in the sympathetic ganglia, but were rare or absent in the cerebral cortex and other supratentorial structures. Marked neuronal loss was see

Combined Ganglioneuroma-Schwannoma of the Retroperitoneum: An Exceedingly Rare Hybrid Nerve Sheath-Ganglioneural Tumor.

Combined ganglioneuroma-schwannoma is an exceedingly rare tumor that has only been described in isolated case reports. We document a 64-year-old man with an incidentally discovered combined ganglioneuroma-schwannoma of the retroperitoneum that was intimately associated with sympathetic ganglia. We highlight the morphological and immunohistochemical findings of this rare tumor, and show evidence of its origin from sympathetic ganglia.
