Trace metal concentrations in soil, leaves, and fruits of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) cultivated in home gardens.

Red raspberry fruits are widely consumed, and raspberry leaves are used in herbal preparations; therefore, trace-metal occurrence in home-garden plants is relevant to environmental monitoring and food-safety screening. This study characterised Cu, Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn, Ni, and Fe in matched soil, leaf, and fruit samples from Polish sites. Concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave-assisted digestion. Observations were paired by site and several Cd, Pb, and Ni results were below the method quantification limit (MQL), matrix differences were evaluated with F

Heavy metals in soils and selected root vegetables from allotment gardens in Warsaw, Poland - health risk assessment.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Heavy metals are considered the main sources of pollution among various soil contaminants. Urban soils, acting as receptors for the considerable influx of heavy metals from various sources, experience accumulation from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Contamination of urban soils with heavy metals may create a potential risk for health, especially in cities where industrial activity is carried out, and there is a high volume of road transport traffic. The aim of the study was assessment of the content of heavy metals: manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), l

Selection and Evaluation of Native Plants for Rain Gardens in Tropical Regions: A Dual-Method Assessment Framework.

Rain gardens depend on resilient plant species that can withstand fluctuating moisture conditions while providing ecological and aesthetic benefits. This study addresses the limited research on tropical and native herbaceous species by evaluating their health through both visual and physiological assessment methods. A pretest list of 44 species was developed through expert interviews, and plant responses were assessed using chlorophyll fluorescence, expressed as the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (F v/F m), and visual damage ratings after a 15-day continuous immersion experiment. Understanding and exploring the diversity of soil microorganisms in tea (Camellia sinensis) gardens: toward sustainable tea production.

Leaves of Camellia sinensis plants are used to produce tea, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, containing a wide variety of bioactive compounds that help to promote human health. Tea cultivation is economically important, and its sustainable production can have significant consequences in providing agricultural opportunities and lowering extreme poverty. Soil parameters are well known to affect the quality of the resultant leaves and consequently, the understanding of the diversity and functions of soil microorganisms in tea gardens will provide insight to harnessing soil microbial

Ticks and Chlamydia-Related Bacteria in Swiss Zoological Gardens Compared to in Contiguous and Distant Control Areas.

Ticks are vectors of numerous agents of medical importance and may be infected by various Chlamydia-related bacteria, such as members of Parachlamydiaceae and Rhabdochlamydiaceae families, which are sharing the same biphasic life cycle with the pathogenic Chlamydia. However, the veterinary importance of ticks and of their internalized pathogens remains poorly studied. Thus, we wondered (i) whether the prevalence of ticks was higher in zoological gardens than in control areas with similar altitude, vegetation, humidity and temperature, and (ii) whether the presence of Chlamydia-related bacteria

Molecular and Epidemiological Characterization of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from Captive Wild Birds in Zoological Gardens in Nigeria.

AIM: This study aimed to characterize ESBL-producing E. coli isolates obtained from apparently healthy captive wild birds from selected zoological gardens in Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 121 freshly deposited faecal samples were collected from captive wild birds in seven major zoological gardens and pooled into 50 samples. The samples were screened for the presence of E. coli. The isolates obtained were tested against a panel of antibiotics and screened for ESBL production using the double disc synergy test (DDST). Primer-specific PCR was used to detect the carriage of ESBL gene

Phytoavailability, human risk assessment and transfer characteristics of cadmium and zinc contamination from urban gardens in Kano, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative data about phytoavailability and transfer into consumed plant parts for heavy metals in intensively managed urban vegetable production areas of sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. We therefore studied the transfer of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) from soil to the root and subsequent translocation to edible portions of four vegetables in six urban gardens. RESULTS: While respective diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-available Zn and Cd concentrations ranged from 18 to 66 mg kg(-1) and from 0.19 to 0.35 mg kg(-1) , respectively, in soils, total Zn and Cd were 8.4-256 mg

Rooftop and surface garden soils in Bangladesh harbor diverse resistome profiles.

Despite the growing expansion of urban agriculture, the diversity, composition, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles (i.e., resistome) of microbial communities in rooftop and surface garden soils in Bangladesh remain insufficiently characterized, limiting our understanding of their potential role as reservoirs and disseminators of AMR. In this study, shotgun metagenome sequencing was applied to 27 soil samples, including 7 from Dhaka rooftop gardens (DRG), 6 from Dhaka surface gardens (DSG), 8 from Gazipur rooftop gardens (GRG), and 6 from Gazipur surface gardens (GSG) to comprehensivel

First case of fatal leucocytozoonosis in domestic ducks in a zoological garden in Japan.

Leucocytozoon spp. are common avian haemosporidian parasites that can cause clinical symptoms with lethal cases in poultry worldwide. However, leucocytozoonosis has not been reported in domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) in Japan. Two adult domestic ducks maintained in a zoological garden in Japan became lethargic, exhibited labored breathing, and died in July 2024. These ducks had hemorrhages in the visceral organs with splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. Megaloschizonts of haemosporidia were histologically observed in the spleen and other organs. Partial sequences of Leucocytozoon mit

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colorectal Cancer: An Eternal Fire in a Beautiful Garden.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, significantly increases the risk of colitis-associated cancer (CAC). Chronic inflammation, a key contributor to carcinogenesis, disrupts immune surveillance, induces deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage, and alters genetic and epigenetic pathways. Molecular pathways such as STAT3, mTOR, and NF-κB drive CAC progression, while unique microbiome alterations-loss of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and increases in Escherichia coli and Fusobacterium species-exacerbate the inflammatory milieu. CAC accounts for 2% of al

Garden classification of femoral neck fracture using deep-learning algorithm.

The Garden classification, based on X-ray interpretation and established over 50 years ago, remains the standard clinical classification system for femoral neck fractures (FNFs). Yet, this classification has a high interobserver variability of 70%. We sought to develop a deep-learning algorithm capable of accurately predicting FNF types, using only X-ray images, with performance comparable to that of computed tomography (CT). We retrospectively collected data from 1,588 patients who underwent X-ray and 3D-CT scans and were diagnosed with femoral neck fractures at Asan Medical Center. The input

Raoultella planticola Pneumonia in an Elderly Gardener: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Raoultella planticola is a rare gram-negative bacillus, mostly found in the environment. It has been rarely identified as the source of infection, particularly in the respiratory tract, leading to shock and multiorgan failure. Limited cases have been reported in the past years, representing a diagnostic challenge. We report a case of a 93-year-old African American female patient with a history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, and dementia who presented with a two-week history of progressive respiratory symptoms, including dyspnea, productive cough, and altered mental

Garden EngAGEment: Cultivating Cultures of Care Through Artful Place-Making.

By describing the practices of Garden EngAGEment, a community garden project at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MNSU), we articulate the concept of artful place-making as an alternative, experiential approach to organizing and teaching care for people with Alzheimer's dementia and other associated dementias (AD/OADs). Drawing from arts-based research, place-based education, and sensory studies, we describe how artful place-making involves the dynamic interplay of knowing, making, and being in the garden where Garden EngAGEment's activities take place. Our analysis describes how Garden Eng

Characterization of Culicoides and mosquito fauna at the National Zoological Garden of Rabat, Morocco.

Zoos are considering to be essential places for the conservation of wild animal species. It is essential to prevent their infection by pathogens especially for those belonging to threatened or extinct species. Zoo captive animals are susceptible to several Culicoides and mosquito borne-viruses. In order to further evaluate the risk of pathogen transmission in zoos, it is essential to identify the presence of potential vector species, as well as the animals bitten by those vectors. For this purpose, Culicoides and mosquito species composition was investigated in ten sites from March to June 202
